Others say...
"Understandable" This book was an invaluable reference when I found myself (unexpectedly and quite unwillingly) involved in the production of a documentary. I'm a CPA-turned-housemover, and I could understand it. Enough said.
"Badly written verbose book" This book has very little content. The author spends more time discussing the cosmetics of documentary filmmaking than content. It is repetitive, random and disorganized. There are a few gems of wisdom, but they are hard to find. If this book was condensed to a 10 page outline, it might actually be more useful than its current 350+ pages.
"Confidence" This is a very useful and also a very practical book. It goes into all details you would like to know more about. And it is very easy to read and understand (for someone from the continent). We never did any documentary work (we always did animation) but our first documentary is one of more than an hour. That doesn't say much of the quality of the documentary but this book gave us atleast the confidence to undertake such a task.
"Practical and Inspiring" I'm a filmmaker from the Middle East. I've come across Barry Hampe's book while in New York and I couldn't think of a better time to have read it since I was developing my first documentary. After reading it, not only did the documentary come together visually in my head but I found myself very clear on what I should eliminate to help tell the story better and put down everything on paper. Since then my request for a grant to shoot the documentary has been accepted. The book demystified the whole process and gave lessons that are easily applicable for the beginning documentarian.
The book leaves you with very little need to pick up another book on making documentaries. I would love to see a revision with a section on pre- (preproduction) whereby the documentaian can learn about what to include in his/her proposal in order to strengthen his/her pitch to production houses or while seeking grants. For instance, sample letter of intention, tips on what to include in query letters, visual aids(?), script of master scenes vs. shooting script. If there is just one thing that could help the reader of this book get out there and start preparing his/her documentary, it would be a section that demystifies the getting started before the actual getting started on shooting.
"How to prepare when you don't know what will happen?" In narrative film the writer, producer and director pay the actors and crew to do what the writer has planned. But in documentary, not only do the subjects not always act as planned or expected, author Hampe instructs that we shouldn't want or expect them to. Hampe's discussions of preparation are extremely well thought and reasoned and the issue of ethics is well-treated. I was intruiged by his historical explaination of how filmmaking came to be such a mercilessly perfectionist craft. Film school instructors should learn well from this book and pass this knowledge on to their students. I will read and refer to it again in the future.

What our customer's say!
"not the best guide ", this really isn't the best guide for documentary filmmaking. especially if your goal is to create an independent project. i wanted a "step 1, step 2. step 3..." guide. this was not it. also, the author's bias is toward behavioral documentaries, for profit.
"Great Introductory Book", I took a two week documentary filmmaking course recently and this book was our text. The majority of the class had no prior experience with making a movie of any sort so this book became our life. I felt it was very easy to comprehend and gave ALOT of great advice. For those who did have experience in filmmaking, which included shooting, editing, and distrubution, this was a refresher for them. Overall I'd say it was a great reference book to rely on.
"More like "documentaries for dummies".", If you have absolutely no experience whatsoever in writing to tell a story, filmaking, photojournalism, videography or communicating in any significant way, this book will be helpful if you're suddenly called upon to produce a documentary film or video.
The advice given here is very basic and really doesn't have all that much to do with making a documentary. For example, Hampe describes the roles of the people who might be found on a typical documentary crew, such as the scriptwriter and camera operator. In sum, this is really a book that describes the entire process of creating a documentary from coming up with an idea, capitalizing it, putting a crew together and so on. It really is for someone who has absolutely no experience whatsoever - and while there are many people who may dream of making a documentary, this book will not provide them with the experience they actually need.
The book is also increasingly outdated. Almost all of the technology Hampe describes for lighting, capturing images and sound, editing has been superceded.
The good thing about the book is that it is thorough: Hampe really does cover every step. But its odd that a book on documentary and reality video creation has not a single illustration. Very strange. Another thing in Hampe's favor is his writing style. Except for way too much patting himself on the back for his own work, Hampe writes in a clear manner.
Overall, this is a quick read and useful to those who have no experience whatsoever with the film making process, but have dreams of making documentaries. This book will not really teach you anything about actually making a documentary, but it does an okay job of describing the process.

"good book", great book for his main points regarding the style and elements one should have in the documentary, mostly revolvong around the point of not having too many 'talking head' interviews and 'showing' the point more,,, the book isn't relevant at all regarding technologies, however, as it seems to be written before 1998 or so,,, but it's probably helpful to see everything from the past,,, overall a great book, i think, for someone like me who is just starting out and doesn't know where to begin,, this book definitely has given me a great idea of the directions i want to be heading in,
"A very helpful introduction to the world of documentaries", I found this book extremely useful and does as it claims-- covers all aspects of documentary production. Although written intially before NLE, it has adequately been updated to cover NLE. I found the planning part very useful but had to make my own notes to organize the author's thoughts. Otherwise would have deserved 4 stars.

Read this reviews before You buy..."So, You Wanna Make a Movie?", Anyone with romantic notions of filmmaking will be brought back to reality with this book. Barry explains, in no uncertain terms, the ins and outs, the nuts and bolts and the day-to-day reality of filmmaking. His understanding comes from the broad perspective of a film student, professional, festival judge and mentor. He covers the gamut of what to expect of yourself and the process of creating a finished product that an audience other than your family will appreciate. His wisdom and pragmatism is refreshing and realistic. Anyone thinking of venturing into this highly competive world would be well served by reading this book. It will help you decide if you have the vision, patience, flexibility and fortitude to venture forward. If nothing else, it will help you appreciate the dedication and artistry that went into the next documentary you see. "Learned a lot", I have highlighted and underlined all over this book. I have learned an extensive amount. If you are involved in documentary films, or are just learning, this is a must read. "Love this book!", I'm about to begin my first documentary film project and though I'm working with a skilled filmmaker I need all the help I can get. In preparation I read, "Making Documentary Films and Reality Videos" by Barry Hampe. This book covers A-Z regarding documentary filmmaking and to boot, it's a great read! Within the first few pages, my thoughts on how documentary film is made were quashed and replaced with new and correct information. Mr. Hampe draws from personal experiences which are cited throughout, and this makes the book read a bit like a story, not so much like a dry textbook. I zipped right through it, learned a tremendous amount, and have pages marked for future reference. Thank you Mr. Hampe!
"Insightful Book", This book proved very insightful into the art of making documentary film. For a beginning filmmaker, I can think of no better way to introduce yourself to every aspect of documentary filmmaking. Mr. Hampe leaves no stone unturned; from the artistic to the technical to the ethical. This book covers it all in a very readable, almost conversational style. Two thumbs up.
"This is my Bible!! The best of the lot!", I bought a lot of books about documentary filmmaking before I embarked on my project. I needn't have bought any other ones. This has been my guide. It is direct and precise. No extra words. This book says it all. Thank you , Barry.
