"MUST have tool"
+ Fairly sturdy and large text
+ Includes traditional and simplified on the "front"
+ Radicial is stated on back for easier lookup in dictionary
+ Numbered to help gauge progress

- Only simplified version for phrases, sample sentence, stroke order
- Definitions are a little short to fully understand some words
- Should/must have a basic understanding of the 4 or 5 sounds used in Chinese (otherwise the characters will be very hard to remember)
- Cannot be the ONLY tool used to learn Chinese; need some way to "hear" the words with the correct pronunciation

= One of the best tools to start learning Chinese. Great time saver (don't need to make my own flash cards). I wish there was a traditional and simplified version, or that all phrases and samples also had traditional side, but I'm learning a lot of simplified characters that I had not intended to.
= Recommend shuffling them to eliminate use of context clues or ordering when testing yourself.
= MUST HAVE for character recognition; only by repetition and review will reading Chinese become natural and effortless.

"just wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
If you are starting to learn Chinese, this is what you need. Chinese characters are difficult to learn but these flashcards make it a lot easier. You can take some cards with you to review wherever you go and in no time you will realise you know a lot of characters. Each card is full of information: the character (simplified and traditional) ,how to write it, pronounciation in pinyin, meaning, radical, examples, etc. Do not hesitate to buy it: you will not regret your choice.

"Great Flash Cards"
Tuttle's "Chinese in a Flash" cards are superb. As shown in the sample photographs, the cards include both traditional and simplified characters, stroke order, and sample phrases which demonstrate usage. The photos speak for themselves.

It would have been nice if a small card-sized box were included for portability. Thankfully, the flash cards are not too much smaller than gaming cards (e.g. Magic cards), so something like the Ultra-Pro "Deck Box" is a decent fit (for roughly a third of the cards in the set).

"Flipping Cards"
Like the first three sets, an excellent way to learn how to recognize more and more characters. Each card is packed with examples, usages, and the proper order to write them. You'll need other resources to properly learn Chinese, but these cards offer a nice piece of the puzzle.

"One of the best Chinese learning resources I have found."
These cards are almost everything I could ask for in a set of character flashcards. I have been taking Chinese in college for 2 years now and that one of the hardest aspects of learning the language is being able to recall how to write all of the characters that I have learned. I tried to create my own flashcards but eventually found the process too time consuming and gave it up.

These flashcards are compact and provide a clear context for each character through the use of example sentences and vocabulary. Without a clear context, it is almost impossible for me to commit a character to memory. These cards are the next best thing to encountering the character in a real world situation.

The only problem I have with these cards is they seem to be designed for people who are only concerned with being able to recognize characters and not write them. I say this because one side has a giant character printed on it while the other side has the pinyin up in the corner along with a smaller version of the character that is on the front. This means that I have to to hold the pile in such a way that my thumb is over the character above the pinyin. Then I have to keep it covered while I attempt to write the character.

But this is only a small inconvenience and I would still recommend these cards to anyone looking to build their vocabulary and strengthen their reading and writing skills.

"Excellent for learning Chinese characters", These flashcards cover 500 characters (and some vocabulary). Sign is on one side and pinyin and english is on the other side. Good quality, thick paper that will last. There is a Vol 2, Vol 3 and Vol 4, so if you get past these 500 cards you can add another 1,500 cards.

"Wish I hadn't bought them...", These cards are well made, no problem there, and the design of the cards are great. The problem is that each character is printed separately on its own card, whereas a high percentage of Chinese vocabulary are made of of two characters; for example, "garden" is hua-yuan, but, there's a character card for hua and another card for yuan. It would be like English cards that had a card for base and another card for ball, but, no card for baseball as one word, or for sweet potato or for study hall. The cards would work well for learning to recognize distinct, separate characters, but not for practical vocabulary practice : you may not mind this, and I wouldn't have imagined it to be a problem, either, but, for what it's worth, I no longer use the cards (instead,I have made my own so I have all of those two-character words on one card...).

"Good flashcards", Despite what others have said, these have a 2003 copyright and have Simplified/Traditional + stokes on the one side; and on the other sid there are a few examples and a few uses of the character in different compounds.

Pros:
1) I like the size because they are portable and they seem to give you many of the most frequent characters.

2) I am using T'ung and Pollards colloquial Chinese and on chapter 14/17, I have been able to use about 3/4ths of the cards.

3) These cards are a) a cheaper than many othes and b) you can expand them more than any other set by adding volumes 2,3,4 which will give you about 1800 characters total.

Cons:
1) Use: The translation is on the top left corner along with the small version of the character so you need to cover the character with your thumb and try not to look at the rest of the card if you want to use them in reverse.

2) Use: would have been nice to list the character's type (i.e.: M, SV, V, MV, ...).

3) Customer Service: I seem to have lost the 16-page booklet which allows you to look up the characters by number. Although I emailed Tuttle a couple of weeks ago to see if I could get a PDF of the 16 page booklet, they have not responded.

"Chinese flashcards", These are handy if you are trying to learn Chinese characters. You can sort them out as you learn them so the pile of known characters gets bigger and bigger. They have useful phrases on them to put the words in context.

"Fatal flaw for conversational Chinese learners", These cards look impressive, but they have one noticeable flaw. On the front side of the cards, they only have the Chinese characters, and not pinyin. This flaw is unfortunately fatal for beginners and even many intermediates. For many novices, pinyin/conversational Chinese comes first, followed by characters over time.

For those who want to focus on conversational Chinese (and have no/limited interest in written character Chinese), I would recommend "Speak in a Week! Flash! Chinese 1001 Cards" as a better alternative. They have BOTH characters and pinyin on the front, and simple definition on the back. Even better, the cards are colored differently for nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and verbs (colors have been shown to help with memory).

Note: On Amazon, "Speak in a Week! Chinese" is listed as being available in Feb. 2008, but I just picked them up for myself in Borders (Nov. 2007).

"Great for beginners.", I am learning Chinese & these flashcards are great! They are a very nice size to carry around, plus they have several different words listed at the bottom of the card that also use the character. They show the simplified & original character. The biggest plus for me is they show you the order in which to write the character (they only show order on the simplified character)! I would highly recommend these cards if you are learning Mandarin Chinese.

"Great idea, poor execution", Perhaps it's a question of trying to put too much information out, but the cards are very difficult to read due to small font size.

"Nice cards.", These are nice cards, easy to use, great to learn pronunciations. But, if they're not for learning meanings of words, then leave off of the meager examples. Otherwise, add some more meaningful examples and make them a little bigger.

"great cards -- very useful", great cards, i use them almost everyday. contains both simple and traditional characters.

i especially like the character combinations that are on each card, i.e. if the character is Gong (work), there are 4 combinations using the character, like, GongZuo, GongRen, etc.

the cards also include a sample sentence on the back using the character. these sentences sometimes are helpful, but a lot of the time they are way to advanced for a beginner in Chinese. if you are not a beginning Chinese speaker, but are using the cards just to learn the characters, then the sentences are more useful/interesting.

"Tai hao le !", They did a great job with these cards.

The feature I really like is the compounds--if the character is ma3 (horse), you can also learn new words like, ma3lu4 (road), ma3hu (careless), ma3shang4 (at once), and ma3la1song1 (marathon).

I bought volume 1 mostly as a review, but using the compounds has really helped put the meaning of the main word into my brain.

I wish I had had these long ago. Highly recommended.

note: The cards mostly use simplified characters. The only time traditional characters appear on the cards is if the character has changed when it was simplified. All of the compound words and example sentences use simplified characters.
