Others say...
"This book has been read over and over by my son." I was looking for a book to help in discussions with my 10 yr old son who was going through some physical changes. This book was descriptive and understandable. He didn't want to talk with me about what was happening to his body. This book really helped explain it to him. He picked up the book and has read it at least a dozen times in the last couple months since we received it. He said it had the right level of detail in descriptions. The other book I purchased "What's happening to me?" was more illustrations and fewer words. He strongly prefers this book.
"Dangerous Words, Beware!" Chapter 8, titled: Is This Normal? States, "it is not unusual for a boy to watch another boy masturbate or to masturbate with a group of boys. Nor is it unusual for two boys to masturbate each other." My 13 year old son was accused of sexual assault by an 11 year old boy (a friend) after the 11 year old suggested they masturbated together, they did so on three occasions. The charge came a year later, social services and the police visited our home. Our younger son was almost removed from our home. Our 14 year old was questioned by police, charged, fingerprinted and we had to hire a lawyer. This book states that boys masturbating together or each other is not unusual. Maybe so, but it is a crime, and your child could be charged with sexual assault. Especially when the other child, out of guilt, fear, or revenge perhaps, tells his parents that he wasn't a willing participate once he realizes his "young, boyish curiosity" was a crime. BEWARE!
"Very Insightful" I bought this book for my 12 year old son and he finds it to be very interesting. It has opened up discussions on things he would normally not discuss with me which has helped us have great conversations. I recommned this book for anybody with young boys going through puberty whom are normally not used to talking about what's going on with them.
"For boys who want to know the facts, this book has the answers!" What's going on down there? A general question, perhaps, but one that boys between the ages of ten and fourteen ask regularly about the changes their bodies undergo during puberty. In Karen Gravelle's book, What's Going on Down There: Answers to Questions Boys Find Hard to Ask, she describes the physical and emotional changes that occur in boys (and, to a lesser extent, in girls) during puberty. In addition, Gravelle discusses sexual activity, homosexuality, AIDS, and other related topics. Gravelle had help with the book; 11- and 13-year-old brothers, Nick and Chava Castro, served as advisors, asking questions and working with Gravelle to make the book's language easy to read and to understand.
I bought this book for my older son when he was ten years old. I liked the funny and informative cartoons, and my cursory reading before giving it to him left me believing it might help him navigate the storms of puberty.
I had not read the book cover-to-cover, but I did so recently in connection with an assignment for my master's degree in library science. I am glad I did. Reading the book carefully served to confirm that I made a wise purchase five years ago, something I suspected when I noticed that my older son had handed down the book to his younger brother a few years ago.
Although the book has a few weird and wonderful moments (like stating that many women don't find childbirth to be particularly painful!), I found it to be an excellent source of practical, no-nonsense information. Some parents might be uncomfortable with the book's approach. The author includes frank discussions of orgasms, masturbation, and abortion, and the illustrator has a drawing of an orchidometer so boys can measure their testicles to see how far along they are in the puberty process. For parents who want their sons to know the facts about their bodies, though, and for boys who need to know those facts, this book is the one book on the subject I would recommend first.
"so very informative" This book is packed full of useful information, easy to read, and helpful drawings. A must-read for any boy going through puberty.

What our customer's say!
"Extremely dangerous words in chapter nine!!!!!", I just want all parents out there to understand that while "sexually experimenting with other boys" (chapter nine) may be "normal", it can also easily be considered a CRIME for which your son can be prosecuted.
BE CAREFUL WITH THIS BOOK!!!!!!
"Just what I needed!", My son went through puberty early (10), and was too embarrassed to talk about anything. I gave him the book. He read it (he hid it, so I have no idea when he would sneak a peak!), and then when I would bring up things, he already knew about them, or would finally ask questions. It actually went along quite well with his school "family planning" program they have in the fifth grade. And I'm talking about a Catholic school!
I am more liberal than my husband, and I found this book didn't offend either my conservative husband or my more liberal feelings.
A must!
"Parent Supervision A MUST!!", This book contains a wealth of information. Most pre teen and young teen boys need the information this book provides, but use caution. You should read it first and decide if it is right for your household and values. I had my son read the first half which I felt was age appropriate and valuable. However, the second half discusses sex in a very casual nature. If your target reader is 10 to 14 years old the word abstinence should be mentioned at least once! Statements in the book seem to give permission to become sexually active if the reader feels he is ready. Plenty of boys "feel" they are ready long before they have reach the maturity level to handle the consequences of sex. We read each chapter in the second half and discussed them together. This allowed me the opportunity as the parent to be sure our household beliefs were upheld and gave me a chance to comment on statements that I felt were reckless, such as the comments on boys masturbating with each other, which could have legal consequences. Also, the statements regarding childbirth not being necessarily painful was almost laughable. There are also comments about being asked by a stranger in the men's restroom to perform sexual acts and the books suggests that the reader tell someone "if you can". In the world we live in the author needs to have been more responsible with her statements.
"puberty education", Great book for my nephew - he enjoyed reading it and asking me questions a bout it.
"Not for younger boys", I purchased this book and "What's Happening to Me?" for my 11 y/o son. He read "What's Happening to Me?" with no problem. He started reading this book the same day. He brought it out to me after reading 3 chapters and said he wasn't ready for it and didn't want to read any more of it. He came back out a little later *very* upset by what he had read, crying and saying he couldn't live with it. It took him 2 hours to calm down enough to go to bed. He asked me to write this review. He says the book goes into too much detail about the sex aspect. He said he thought the book would tell what happens during puberty but this book dealt too much with sex.

"Great Information!", I mailed a copy of this book to my 10 year old step son, because he was asking his father questions about the process of becoming a man. I read the book thoroughly. I believe the book is excellent. There are a few points in the book that will make a parent uncomfortable, but it is information a young boy needs to know, and deals with situations he has likely seen on television or in movies. My step son's mother did not let him read the book because she felt he did not need to be exposed to the small section on homosexuality and masturbation. I ordered a copy for him to read at our house, and he told his father he was glad to have the opportunity to read the book. He stated that the book addressed questions he would never have asked his mother, and that the book also helped him determine where his friends had given him misleading or incorrect information about what to expect during puberty. Overall, this is an excellent book, and I hope that parents won't let their fears override an otherwise excellent method of providing a young man with the information he desparately needs to know.
"What's Going on Down There?: Answers to Questions Boys Find Hard to Ask", This was the best book I have found for the big Talk. I would recommend that the parent read it first, Then have the child read it in private, before discussing it together. It answered the really hard questions with witty cartoons and candor. It debunked many of the old myths and gave kids the answers they really need to make a decision that's right for them. I would highly recommend this book to any parent. It would be useful for the parent to read it early so they can prepare the child for the changes of puberity before they start occuring.
"Very Informative", This book has helped answer a lot of questions for my [...]. It is a welcome book for single moms who find it hard to answer many questions young men ask.
"Excellent Choice for the Young Man in Your Life!", A very complete, and thorough guide to puberty for both parents and their sons. Understandable for the average 10 year old and well written so that its funny. Brings about questions of the various topics with ease. A definite resource tool for anyone with boys!
"Great info for girls too!", I'm a middle school librarian, and started at my middle school in 2005. I was previously in an elementary school where nothing like this book would have safe to put on the shelves. I would have had tons of parents up in arms that it was there.
HOWEVER... I did think it was appropriate for the middle school level, in my case, 6th to 8th grade. In 5th grade in our school district, the kids go to this health center to get "The Talk". When they come back, they all have these little pamplets with information on them. The girls have one with just info about girl stuff on them, but the boys get info about boys bodies and girls bodies. I don't think this is right. Both sexes need to know about eachother, and not allowing the girls to have the same pamphlet is just wrong.
I knew that many kids out there don't get spoken to about sex by their parents or are totally embarrassed by the school lectures. This book has a lot of great information, and it's something that the girls should feel comfortable reading as well. One of the girls in my school just checked out the book today and was really excited to read it. The boy in her class, who saw her take it out, felt it was inappropriate for her to read it, although he didn't want to take it out himself. People are made to feel embarrassed about their bodies, and so they don't go to read things like this, and that's when mistakes happen, and sometimes those mistakes can be quite costly, either another life being brought into the world, or maybe a life being taken out due to disease.
There should be more titles like this one, dealing with this topic, for kids. I commend the people who wrote it and hope they intend to write more books.
