Others say...
"Book with good lessons" I originally skipped the lessons in this book, in favor of just playing all of the tabbed out studies. Big mistake! The lessons are very well graded, and move at a comfortable pace (the studies kind of throw you in to the thick of things, a bit overwhelming for a beginner). As a teacher, I have used this book to help students out with their technique, performance, and theory.
The actual blues that it does teach is very much on the cliche side of things, but the lessons will have a universal appeal towards other types of music, especially as far as the theory goes. Because of this I have to grade this book with 5 stars, because it is really one of the best in this regard, and with a good mix of learning and playing, it is a great choice for learning and understanding the guitar.
Daniel Page, Guitar Instruction
"Great book for learning to play guitar and blues" This book is recommended by teachers and advanced guitar players for learning blues although it also allows to improve general aspects not only related to the blues. It is a good way to understand the basics of blues and some of its styles. Some previous knowledge and experience are needed but the book can be followed by beginners.
Each chapter is divided into three parts. Part one is dedicated to scales. Minor and major pentatonic scales are described and studied. Part two shows how to play chords and progressions and to apply them to blues and other songs. Part three is a study or song in which the author introduces techniques as bending, sliding, and so on. The studies are given in musical notation and also tablature.
An advantage of this book is that the author, John Ganapes, answers some questions in his own web and also gives some tips on how to practice and how to play the studies. The learning can be continued with More Blues You Can Use or Jazzin' the Blues by the same author.
"Stellar learnings on blues rock!" I have only been playing guitar for about a year so am still entry level. I knew the major chords and some others before picking up this great book. I would say it is NOT a raw beginner's book as others have said but it is an entry-level book for those who have at least tinkered with the guitar for a couple of months. The content is very easy to comprehend and simply takes some practice to master. It is laid out perfectly and the instructions couldn't be more straight forward...just do what Mr. Ganapes says and you'll be on your way! This is definitely a blues rock course though and not traditional acoustic blues. I play it on my acoustic (as well as the electric) and it sounds great, but not traditional. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in playing blues rock music on guitar!
"Good Workbook" This is a good workbook for an advanced beginning guitar student. It's not for the pure beginner. Anyone just starting should learn the basics first: open position chords, bar chords, scales, etc. before they crack open this book.
As you can imagine the book starts off pretty easy with some simple rhythms and chords. It introduces different scales along the way and said scales are then used in the sample tracks on the accompanying CD. Some of the exercises are very easy. Those towards the end of the book are much more difficult.
There is not much in this book about chords. Most teaches and provides exercises for picking. The student will learn various scales, alternate picking, string bending, slides, shifts among other fundamentals. After having worked through this book, the student will have developed the skills necessary to do some awesome blues soloing.
"Rhythm players who've given up, get this now!" I've been playing blues & rock for at least 25 years and confess I'm still a "beginner" when it comes to lead. If you're like me, or if you are a real beginner, this is a great book to jump start you on the road to some very tasty but not impossible blues & rock lead.
20 plus lessons that you can work thru at the rate of 1 or 2 per week w/o killing yourself.
There is a sequel that is also excellent when you're done with this one.

What our customer's say!
"Learn to improvise entire neck, any key", I am 61 years old and finally I can play lead (any key) over entire neck after going thru this book and taking time on each lesson to fully understand it. I have taken private Jazz lessons for a year before but something was missing. This book made it clear,I now see lead patterns when i hit a chord and can jump anyplace on neck and still be playing lead in the right key.
"Great Book", I found this book to be great for learning general techniques for playing the Blues. The book starts out with some simple riffs and graduates into more challenging routines while introducing new concepts used by the Blues masters such as progressions, bending, use of the Blues pentatonic scale, etc.
"Having lots of fun with this", This is a nice introduction to blues guitar. With a good combination of theory and practice, each lesson builds on the previous material. The one confusing thing I've found so far is the fact that the author will introduce some chord forms for a given lesson, then in the practice exercise, a completely unknown chord form will appear. It isn't that the "new" chord is wrong - it just hasn't been covered in the lesson. Guess that keeps you on your toes, tho. The CD has some really nice "studies" that you can play along with. Bottom line - after about 4 weeks, I've gotten through the first four lessons and I'm having more fun with my guitar than ever. Your mileage may vary.
"Excellent Method Book. For Intermediate + Players ", This book is not really a beginner's book. Some of the licks require a dexterity level beyond what a beginner would be expected to do. This is one of the few books with a method presented in a logical format as opposed to a caffeteria style approach leaving you asking questions. For the most benefit, you should do the following:
1. Get this book as well as the "more Blues You Can Use". 2. Also get "Complete Rhythm Guitar Guide for Blues Bands" by Larry McCabe. 3. Listen to the Rolling Stones' Beggar's Banquet and Exile on Main Street CDs. 4. Listen to Kenny Burell's "Midnight Blue" CD over and over.
"Terrific Method, not for beginners", I have been very impressed with this book. I am a novice guitarist, but with 30 years experience as a pianist and a degree in music education, I am not your average beginner. So I can tell you this isn't a book for beginners, but you don't have to be very far along to benefit from it. My teacher, a friend from music school, was teaching me to play blues guitar, and I bought this book just to check it out. He was thrilled to find a book that uses the same method he has been teaching the blues for 20 years, but with the added benefit of some good songs to play. We immediately incorporated it into my lessons. The structure of the book includes short lessons including scales and chord progressions, followed by some nifty little blues numbers you can play to illustrate those concepts. The book takes you through each skill and concept step by step, and is really fun to play. If I had one suggestion to make, it would be to include backing tracks in addition to the demo tracks for all of the songs on the CD, so that you could play them by yourself instead of just with the recorded version. Otherwise, this is a terrific method and a lot of fun. I will defintely buy more of the books in this series.

"good enough", Good enough for both beginner and intermediate level guitarists. Takes you from the very begining of pentatonic and teaches you all basic step by step. You can buy it without even thinking, simply one of the best.
"Great for learning the Blues", This is a great series of books put out by John Ganapes. The book is easy to follow and the lessons build on each other well. The best part about this book is the lead lines which are fairly easy to learn but challenging to master. Further, you can get backing tracks for all the lessons off the series website which allows you to play without the lead guitar. Awesome start for those beginning to learn the blues.
"great book", I am a beginner an I found this book very easy to follow. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn how to play the blues.
"Very solid instruction for the blues", This is probably the best introductory book I have managed to find for electric blues. The tunes are great and sound good. The performances are inspiring, well graded and fun to play along with. However what distinguishes this book is the lesson material. Each chapter contains a different topic or two to practice, including pentatonic scales, chord changes, intervals and so on. They are set out well, you just have to proactice them!
Areas where it could be improved are to have fingerings on the study tunes and separate backing tracks on the CD. I have to admit though that this book is backed up by a great web site and these issues are being addressed. Make that four and a half stars.
"The best guitar instruction book i own", I have so many guitar instruction books, VHS tapes, and DVDs and this is AWESOME. I can't express enough how much I love this book. I've gone through about three weeks of lessons so far and I'm a much better guitarist. I am improvising using the scales from the lessons.
The key here is "you can use", what I've learned so far I could play out with. I'm a hobby guitarist. I use to play a lot of gigs when I was in my twenties (I'm in my forties now). I'm still learning to be a better musician and not just a guitarist and this book does help with that goal in addition to teaching you to play the blues.
THE BEST GUITAR INSTRUCTION BOOK!!
