"Less for more..."
This is my third purchase of "How Computers Work." The first editions included an excellent CD that worked with Windows 3.11 and later with Windows95 and 98. The CD was excellent and an wonderful teaching tool. (I teach an A+ Computer Repair-type class at the high school level.)

My second purchase included a CD that was somewhat useful -- sort of a lame interactive presentation.

This edition no longer includes the CD, which is why I made this purchase. The lesson here is not to order something on-line late at night when one is not paying attention -- my fault.

On a positive note, I had our high school librarian order several copies for my students to check out.

The book has good, up-to-date info, great illustrations, but I miss the original CD.

"How Computers Work Review"
Great book for information concerning the computer and the technology connected to it. However, it is not for a beginner or novice individual just starting out with a computer.

"Great Book for any Level"
This book is really easy to understand and will leave you with a good understanding of the computer. Not only does it explain computers but other things you might be interested in are brought into the light too. For example, TiVo, MP3 players, printers, and monitors are in this book with detailed pictures and descriptions just like with the computer section. This book is a must buy for anyone with curiosity about computers or their cousins.

"Ron White fan"
Besides the fact that I have every edition of Ron White's HOW COMPUTERS WORK, your marketing department is so effective that they have now conned me into buying two copies of the 8th Edition. I trust that this means that you will be sending me a single copy of the 9th Edition in the near future.

"No disk"
This book did not come with the cd that came with earlier editions.

What our customer's say!

"It's about time.", I'm a HUGE fan of "How stuff works" kinda books. This is THE book I have been looking for. It's written in such an interesting way. Personally, I feel pictures and diagrams are ESSENTIAL to understanding something thoroughly, and this book delivers and executes on that matter. If you are a visual, hands-on kinda person, then chose this book over others. It's second only to a real hands-on experience and live teacher.

"Great book for beginners - High Level Overviews", I use this book whenever I am explaining to a class a general overview of computer technology. The artwork and graphics are a fantastic talk point to depict how things are working inside the machine.

Secondly, the terminology is accurate and well organized / defined.

I'm a big fan of "For Dummies" books when giving someone a first pass of any topic. These are just a step up in complexity, in my opinion.

"Make your own call", Rather than add to endless "This sucks!" "No it doesn't!" arguments, my review is simple - if you need an understanding of how computers work, give this book a try. THEN, and only then, make your own decision. Other people's opinions are great, but only you can determine a book's worth to you.

"Rife with typos, but helpful for a general understanding", (My copy did not come with a CD, so I can only comment on the book itself.)

My edition (Ninth Edition) was clearly assembled and edited in a hurry. A couple of quick examples: the diagram on p. 12 shows a computer with numbered parts, and the accompanying text refers to the numbers and describes the respective parts. The diagram in my book has no #6 -- the text is there, but unless you already know where the part is, it's not helpful. Other little typos include the following text from p. 26: "See how a transistor works, p. XXX" (They forgot to replace the XXX with the actual page number).

Neither of these errors is a deal-breaker, of course, but it makes me wonder if I am unwittingly being misinformed by other typos. Much of the book, though -- because of the illustrations and simply worded text -- is quite helpful to a beginner.

Having said that, I would not pay full price for this. As I write this review, there is a used edition for $6.99, and that sounds about right.

"How Computers Work Book Review", If you want to know the ins and outs of how computers work, beginning with the foundation, this is the book for you!

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Great on basics", Very good pictures. You'll walk away with a true understanding about how computers work.

"forget 'dummy' stuff...", Read it, buy multiple copies!!! Share it, spread it around to ANYONE that uses a computer by punching the cute little buttons... This should be mandatory reading, required (like a drivers license) for ANYONE who buys a computer or is hired to do even data entry!!! I tell everyone I meet who complains they 'don't know that much about their computer'... BUY THIS BOOK! And so should YOU! I used to carry the title and ISBN with me to share with folks (really! and I may do so again after writing this review!) If you want to punch the cute little buttons... read this book FIRST.

"It's ok but not worth buying.", For general knowledge, this book is ok. However, I'm not a computer newbie and have noticed a few discrepancies regarding some information presented. When discussing how relational databases work, the author misrepresents the information on primary and foreign keys and when talking about DOS/Windows 3.1's file naming convention is also misleading. He says that the filename consists of 11 characters. He should have stated that the first part of the filename could be up to 8 characters long followed by 3 characters of the file type after the period. And that Windows 95 and later use the long file naming convention (up to 255 characters followed by a period and a 3 character file type extention.)

It's not bad, but the author didn't thoroughly check all his facts. If you have to, take it out from your local library.

"A COLORFUL INTRODUCTION TO PC", Any beginner or intermediate learner, who wants to be enlightened on the basic mechanisms of both computer and its peripheral devices, would be laying a good foundation by starting with this book. Without compromising its concise outlook, the coverage of this book is as comprehensive as it is illustrative. Its updated chapters are well-appreciated, although that anyone who currently owns the seventh or even the sixth edition would not be missing much by sticking with either editions.
Despite being labelled "How Computers Work", the contents of this book are not limited to PCs. They covered other related issues like: Networking, Multimedia, Printers, Software, and so on. Detailed explanations, which are frequently complemented by high-resolution graphics are abundant. This book literally takes its reader into the 'engine room' that keeps a computer running. It is an impressive virtual tour on paper!
However, if you are an advanced learner, this book will be of little use to you. In fact, there is hardly anything in it that any self-respecting advanced learner has not come across. Likewise, Apple/Mac stalwarts need not invest in it. Its focus is entirely on the PC: with no room for Mac.
All-in-all, the uniqueness of this book is plausible. It is a welcomed advantage. Every PC component, as well as peripherals, are laid bare. It is a resourceful hand-holding tools for beginners: a worthy and dependable guide for any novice.

"i love it!", incredible buy this book if you have any intrest in learning about the inner workings of a computer. NOT FOR A MAC USER. beginner intermediate. it helps to have some experience with computers. when reading this but it doesnt matter.
