"For Programmers..?" This book is great if you want insight into designing interfaces, but not so great if you want to have any idea of what best practices are in C++. The code examples that he created and put on his website have both the function declarations and the functions themselves in the header files. He doesn't even mention anything about best practices with header files, which is a pretty important part of the language.
This might be a good book to have in your library if you use Visual Studio, but I wouldn't recommend it to a beginner in C++. Find something else to learn from.
"Do not buy this book" You probably see a lot of His book. Just do not buy it. It spends 2/3 talk about C++, the rest of 1/3 on something else. The title is cheating and false. I would call it a bad C_++ book.
"Superb Learning Tool" This book is well written and very clear. It is helping me relearn C+ after switching from Borland to Microsoft.
"Review" I got this book as an introduction and reference to the .Net framework. The book did a quality job of discussing the nuances of Visual C++ as opposed to regular c++. I do wish it made a better distinction between the two. But I was satisfied with my purchase.
"Ivor Horton's Beginning Visual C++ 2005 (Programmer to Programmer)" I think that this book is very good for beginners. It covers in detailes most of C++ language aspects and provides comprehensive examples. So I'd give five starts for C++. For MFC however, I think that the book isn't complete enough (well that's probably because MFC is huge and it's just impossible to cover everything in detailes). The good thing is that author tries to give the concept of the structure of MFC which sometimes is more important than providing all the detailes about particular language or library. So I'm giving five stars for MFC too. There was one thing I didn't like though. Some examples on MFC were written as if they just wanted to make it work. For example, "Sketcher" program was ok in terms of OOP but in terms of good organization of your code its readability (for possible future changes) and its efficiency is questionable. Thus overall I'm satisfied with this book and it's worth the money I spent on it.

What our customer's say!
"Very readable intro to Visual C++ ", Excellent, readable, and comprehensive intro to Visual C++ for folks with a smattering of programming knowledge. You don't have to have any C++ experience to use this book, but I do recommend that if you are an absolute beginner to the world of computer programming, you pick up an easier book, say, COBOL for Dummies. I bought this book as a refresher...I've done Visual Basic for years and want to go back to something closer to the machine level--I miss the granularity and sheer power of C++ and I'm tired of the slowness of the .Net line and their buggy frameworks. These Horton C++ books exhibit a friendly and relaxed writing style: I find most programming texts too terse and psychotic for my taste. I picked up a more advanced text from Wrox, Professional C++, to get back to the intermediate level later on and I will get the Stroustrup and Myers texts to help me cross the threshhold of advanced C++ development once again.
If you are truly new to C++, don't get discouraged with the many battles you'll encounter ahead...the payoff down the line is very great if you can master this Maserati of programming languages. Don't believe all the negative talk you hear about C++...most of this comes from folks who lack true mastery of the C++ language and how to use it effectively (C++ goes where C#, Java, and VB will never ever go). The Horton books will take much of the pain away--work quickly through this book and maybe try out the Dietel books simultaneously to get a jump start on your fellow C++ students! Good luck!
"Great Book but Boring", This is a great book. However, the chapters are long and can be boring.
Also, if you hate math then you might be a little annoyed at all the simple exercises using basic math. Maybe, if Ivor Horton referenced food instead .. hmmmm.
One other downer about this book ... as you get more advanced you will find yourself working on only one example. The author should have used new examples in each chapter to help the learning experience.
I've found that if you work with one example and someone misses something along the way ... they will have difficulty as they progress.
Other than that ... this is a great book and very well written. You will definitely learn a lot reading this tutorial.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone!
"A book worth not having", I found this book of little or no use. When a buy a book that is this big (1180 pages) you think, "Wow this thing is so big it must be the one." I am more and more of a mind that programming books that are bloated are just poorly thought out. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
"Super book", This book is and has everything you need to learn VC++ and MFC. It takes you through every step to get you on track.
"Horton's VC++ 2005", I learned C from Ivor Horton and i liked his style. But this book is not good in my opinion for a few reasons.First half of the book is talk about standar t and and cli c++ but not in detail.Second half of the book is about MFC and WinForms but again i do not find them enough. It is very hard to follow the examples about MFC and WinForms and i couldnt manage to get to the end of them because of compiling errors and i was very bored.Putting all the things in just a book : ansi c++,c++/cli,databases,mfc,winforms is not useful at all.

"Nice introduction to Visual C++", I bought this book from Amazon. Its a nice introduction to Visual C++. Ivor Horton gives a gentle introduction to C++ and then leads into Visual C++ Windows programming. The book should be easy for beginners to read and is detailed enough to enable an experienced programmer to write commercial Windows programs.
On the negative side, the book has many errors, and in my opinion is a bit misorganized
"Informative, but long winded.", I bought this book because I've had little experince with C++ or Visual Studio, and I wanted something that would be in-depth and thorough. While this book is a very authorative resource, it seems that he repeates himself too often. Also he doesn't give enough examples. But all in all it was a good buy for the money.
"Good even for experienced VC++ programmers", I have 12 years of C++/MFC experience and I still found this book to be THE one that would ultimately propel me to learn C++/CLI and be on my way to becoming as proficient in .NET as I am in MFC. I still have a long ways to go, but this book is the one to start with.
"It looks like an excellent book", I found this book excellent for those who want to learn this language, it contains a lot of examples easy to test, and the explanations are extensively detailed, ...
"Ivor Horton's Beginning Visual C++ 2005 ", Looked at several books before purchasing. Excellent book for beginner or advanced needing review of c++. Second Ivor Horton book. Highly recommend.
