Others say..."An all-time favorite"In early 2000, I was asked to learn ASP and SQL. First I picked up Beginning ASP 2.0 Programming and later Professional SQL Server 2000 Programming. This SQL book made both programming SQL Server and administering SQL Server easy to understand. It was also an invaluable resource for passing the MCDBA exams. Robert Vieira is a wonderful, wonderful technical book author and this book is still one of my favorites nearly 5 years later after I bought it. It is one of the few books that I couldn't put down -- I read it cover to cover within a few weeks. I very much recommend this title for anyone learning SQL Server programming or administration. And even though its "Professional" and not "Beginning", it's still a great beginners guide. While it's also decent for moderately experienced programmers, experts will find Ken Henderson's "The Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL" to be of much greater use. As previously stated, this book focuses not only on programming but administration too and people who enjoyed the admin basics will find that Brian Knight's Admin911 picks up where this book leaves off. "Good book, but don't set your expectation so high"From all the books on my shelf that discuss this subject, SQL Server 2000 Design and T-SQL programming (despite its rating in Amazon) and this book (in that order) are my favorites. Regarding this book, it is comprehensive and managed to cover a lot of important subjects although by no means completely. If this is your first book about the subject, you will defiantly benefit from it as it will hold your hands and tech you how to take your first steps without falling and hurting your self and then it will also take you to the level that you are walking on our own but that is it (which is a lot) don't expect any acrobatic moves. In other words, don't set your expectation so high; the book has its own share of nonsense and it is a lot. I had to go back to my collage days when I started with each text book by a process I called "garbage collection", you go through each page with a marker or pen and mark a whole section or paragraph as filling, nonsense, garbage, etc so if you have to come back and read the section, you don't waste your time reading this one again. The book is full of these sections. For example, read the chapter on Views specifically the section on Indexed views page 326; there is a complete page telling you an Oracle story that only your PhD computer geek, database freak grandmother will care to tell you before she puts you to sleep (maybe for good). The author didn't mind wasting your time with this story but he was ok with next to useless discussion about the restrictions associated with creating Indexed Views. Can you use aggregate functions in this type of views? Are you allowed to aggregate columns that allow NULLs? Are you allowed to use Order By? Earlier in the chapter, the author said you can use Order By in view if you also use TOP; Is this still valid in the case of Indexed Views? You will not be able to answer all of these questions by reading this chapter. A brand new, million dollar feature (according to the story) like would deserve more attention but it didn't. On Chapter 5 (Joining Tables) page 129; the author wanted to build a new data base to meet a certain requirements that doesn't exist in the sample database. What are these requirements he was after? He didn't say, read on you will find that he wanted a gerund table to represent Many-to-Many relationship that he described as follow: [Quote] A vendor can have more than one address and vice versa [\Quote] I still don't get it, how an address can have more than one vendor. If I were in the author's shoes, I would take advantage of this opportunity and point first to a sloppy design in Pubs that allowed the Discount table to carry Store_ID in it and then correct the design by introducing a well designed two new tables Discounts (by themselves) and a Store_Discounts gerund table. I will not even get close to the technical editing department in Wrox, I hate to disturb the sleep of those kind folks. Read this example at the bottom of page 561 and you will see what I mean USE Northwind SELECT OrderDate, CONVERT(VARCHAR(12) , OrderDate, 111) AS "Converted" FROM Orders WHERE OrderID = 11050 Yields us Order Date Converted --------------------- -------------- 1998-04-27 00:00.00 2000/10/11 It is not even in the Errata even though I sent it to them few years ago. The list can goes on but this is not my goal; I would not even mention those in details if the guide lines for the review specifically asked me to detail what I didn't like about the book. I am not trying to demean the author's effort I am only trying to set your expectation to, what I think, the correct level. In short, the book is good but is not great and defiantly it will NOT qualify you to pass an important exam like 70-229 by itself as another reviewer indicated. "Good Book to Own"Title is correct. It is a professional manual for SQL Server 2000. Not for those without formal training although there are usable snippets in the book. "Incredible."Robert Vieira knows how to write! His coverage of SQL is thorough and his ability to explain why you would use a feature is wonderful. Amazing clarity and thoughtful concise examples. And, he includes the complete syntax of SQL statements before explaining them, something lacking in other guru books. It is a great buy. Thanks Robert for your work. "Best Book By Far...."I've read the MSPress Certification book, BOL (SQL server Books Online), and neither come close to the under standing this book gives. Things I've read 5 times over in the other aforemenioned book and still didn't get an understanding, I read once in this book and understood right off. I wished I had this book before taking the admin exam (I passed, but caught heck doing it). aaron@aaronford.com

What our customer's say!
"Best overall SQL 2000 book", By far, this is the best overall MS SQL 2000 server book written until today. Most topics are covered from basic to advance level. This book is a must have for anyone who is looking to get a well rounded knowledge of what's possible with MS SQL 2000.
The chapters I liked the most are: Ch9 SQL Server Storage and Index Structures Ch10 Views Ch12 Stored Procedures Ch15 Triggers Ch16 Advanced Queries Ch26 Full-Text Search Ch29 Performance Tuning All Appendixes
Noticed that I said "best overall" & "Most topics"; this book will not have an answer for very advance topics in areas like DTS, performance tuning, XML, & Analysis Services. There are great books out there if what you are looking for is not in Professional SQL Server 2000 Programming. The "Professional SQL Server 2000 DTS" is the best I have read when it comes to Data Transformation Services. For performance tuning and XML you may find books written by Ken Henderson to be among the best. For Analysis Services I have not found one book I will recommend yet.
"Not bad not good", In general the book is ok. The author needed to make more research in some areas and not made use only of his own experience.
He does not mention about the issues with no following ANSI 92. The stored procedures and the trigger parts are really boring.
Sometimes the book is good but the author likes to move into areas he should not or he is not proficient enough. His comments on normalization and security are sometimes so strong that I tend to think that this guy is watching just one side of the coin.

"Tiny font", Excellent book, but the font is VERY small which makes reading difficult even though I do not have vision problems.
"One of the best!!", I have this book and I can say it is the best SQL Server book I have ever read. It may even be the best Development/Computer book I have. Every chapter is easy to read, detailed and concise. The coverage is phenomenal. I use this for reference quite a bit. The only thing that is missing is more detail on DTS... but that is a book in itself.
"Un-satisfied with this book", If you ever read this book: Joe Sack' SQL server 2000 Fast Answers for DBA and Developer, then you will see Vieira's book misses so many details about SQL server 2000. Understanding that this book focuses on PROGRAMMING only, but still it misses many PROGRAMMING DETAILS of SQL server 2000. I do not have no connection to Joe Sack's business. I read and compare the two and speak out my mind.

Read this reviews before You buy..."Best sql server programming book", This is a very good book for sql server programmers. Not like the other books where you find lots of cut and paste from BOL. I feel every sql server programmer should reed this book. Lots of insight and very good information on sql server. Only a person who loves sql server can write a book like this. A must read!! "Complete and readable guide to programming SQL Server...", Occasionally I have the need to leave my IBM/Lotus programming platform and interact with data stored in Microsoft SQL Server 2000. I even have it running on my laptop as a higher-end alternative to Access. I found that the book, Professional SQL Server 2000 Programming by Robert Vieira (Wrox) is a very good reference for manipulating data in that environment. Vieira concentrates specifically on the programming aspects of SQL Server 2000 as opposed to teaching you how to administer the server. He does touch on an administration overview in chapter 30, but it's not something you'd read in order to pass an administration exam. Although the title does say "Professional", this does not mean you have to be a veteran SQL programmer to benefit from it. The earlier chapters cover the fundamentals of RDBMS technology, as well as how SQL is used in a SQL Server 2000 environment. The further you get into the book, the more you'll find subjects that are either more advanced or cover techniques you'll use in application development, such as how to build triggers and stored procedures. While you will learn all these skills within the SQL Server 2000 platform, the core technologies are transferable to just about any RDBMS. Time spent with this book will continue to pay off regardless of what database system you need to use at any given time. While the content is technical, the writing style is conversational and approachable. It's actually quite easy to read the material and digest the concepts without trying to fight against the author's style. If you have need to work with SQL Server 2000 from a development standpoint, this is definitely a book to consider to guide you along the way.
"The best SQL 2000 instruction from a very great teacher", Rob is a natural at teaching his craft, which he knows extremely well. You can tell he is a professional that has mastered his craft and enjoys sharing the information that is essential for anyone to become a true professional in the field. Rob is also very honest. Some writers mention this book v. the 7.0 book not being different? Rob addresses this in the first few pages of this book, as an honest and good man would. You see, there are more differences between 7.0 and 2000 than some people have picked up on is what I believe. Sure there is much similar information. That packaging, title and Rob's own words are quick to show and tell you that. But all in all it was worth a new book for the 2000 upgrade. In fact, there are some MAJOR changes in 2000, so it's worth it just to learn about those and the same great in depth information. I've noticed a second edition of this title but can never find it available. I own this version from the year 2000, and believe me it is ragged from constant use, but would pay for the second editon if I could find it just for any new information Rob has to dispense. I feel this informtion is so well presented and such a great all around tutorial, reference, guide, all in one book I'd pay for the updated info in a second editon gladly. Thanks Rob. I personally think you are the best. I wish I worked for you! You are not only a master and completely professional, but you have that magic quality of not being full of yourself in any manner and humble in fact....a very admirable trait. A reader who is appreciative and better for your great work.
"Stuck to my earlier edition", I agree with the reviewer Wendt, who complained that this book is too much like its earlier edition. I borrowed a copy of this new edition and compared it to my copy of the previous. Partly 'cus I was wondering if I needed to upgrade. But not really. Wendt is correct. If you already have an earlier copy, then you should save some money and stick with that. The extra new stuff here is pretty minor.
"Best book on SQL 2000 programming available", This book covers everything a professional programmer using SQL server 2000 needs to know in just the right depth and breadth of topics. Can't beat it. Don't think twice on this one, unless the second edition is available, then buy it.
