"Best bass book i've read" This is a great book to get if you're just starting to play, or even if you're more advanced. It goes step by step in very concise, simple lessons. Even if you get stuck or don't understand something the people at Dummies are extremely supportive. To give an example, I was stuck in one part of the book or didn't exactly get something, and I e-mailed customer support at Dummies. They must have got in contact with Patrick Pfeiffer (the author of the book) and he actually called me on my cell phone and explained everything to me! It's one of the nicest things anyone has done for me and I was quite blown away by it. So if you think you'll have an interest in playing bass, I would not hesitate to buy this book.
"My top 5 Bass Books" I have over 50 books and 10 dvd's - this is one for the library. The most impotant chapter of this book in my opinion is "Building a Groove". My other favorites are Bass Grooves: Develop Your Groove and Play Like the Pros in Any Styleand Slap Bass Bible. Totally recommend getting the Tascam MPB-T1 Mobile Bass Trainer - MP3with a leather case from ValetStand com. Just down load the cd to the Tascam trainer and you can practice anywhere.
"Good but not great" This book is a worthwhile resource, but it's pretty shallow with a lot of its explanations. What I liked least about this book was it's focus on the 4 finger technique (everything is charted with the assumption that you can cover 4 frets with 4 fingers). I have small to medium hands and this technique does work for me without serious strain. The book does not explain how to pivot for fret coverage or offer alternative techniques such as the 1-2-4 (Four fingers covering three frets instead of four). For a beginner, it might be easy to conlude that the bass isn't for them when they end up struggling with the 4-finger technique. The Hal Leonard series does a much better job of explaining different techniques and alternatives and is a superior learning resource for beginners.
"Excellent" Excellent Book!!
My wife bought the book and a bass guitar and amp for me for Christmas. I am 50 years old and had no music background other than the Sax in the 3rd grade for two months. In short, I was clueless.
This book is excellent. It sets you on the right path to learn. It teaches you basic music theory and then applies it to the Bass Guitar with the right amount of flexibility and common sense. If you already know music theory, you will pick up the Bass alll the more faster. Having gone through this book, I am convinved that learning an instrument without learing music theroy is foolish, kinda like trying to learn to speak with learning how to read and write.
I happliy augmented the book with things I found on the internet and conversations with musician friends. The foundation it provides on scales, tempo, and styles is invaluable.
Within hours of picking up the guitar and reading the book, I had a sense of how to play. With days/weeks I had a solid grasp of the instrument and how I could play with others. After that, it became a matter of practice and discipline. The book encouraged me to explore further and seek out more information on music and the Bass. You cannot ask for more that that.
"great book" I just reviewed Hal Leonard's 3-in-1 bass book, which I bought at the same time as this one (a few months ago), and my reaction is basically the complete opposite. I like both books, but now I'm talking about this one.
The paragraph/semi-narrative style is great for learning when you're away from your instrument. But you'll probably find yourself wishing you had your bass right next to you to try out something new you learned.
I'm a beginner to the bass, but not a beginner to music. Still, I sing and singers (especially sopranos like me) are notoriously lacking in knowledge of music theory. So I love finding out about some of the hows and whys behind the whats. It also has great quick references. Personally, I think that anybody could learn from this book.

What our customer's say!
"A Low Note", Usually I have nothing but praise for the "For Dummies" guides. Not this time. I suspect the fatal flaw here centers on the "Bonus Audio CD!"--conjuring up associations with a prize in a Cracker Jack box. About halfway through the book it dawns why the material is flying over my head.
The CD is not incidental to the book. It's essential. "Bass Guitar" seems built around the CD. Kick out the CD prop and you'd have no book. I'm afraid the author assumed that a shiny piece of plastic would so dazzle that readers wouldn't notice the indifferent writing. It's a slight-of-hand that simply does not work.
"Groovy bass book!", I'm a new bass player and this book is great -- I actually sleep with it, hoping to absorb even more through osmosis. I love Patrick's straight-forward approach and sense of humor. While I haven't looked at many other bass guitar books, I like how this one uses music, tabulature and the grid to show what to play. The initial/basic exercises are great for a beginner like myself, and make of lot of sense in the learning process. The CD is helpful, but it keeps playing straight through from one example/track to the next. I might need to change the settings on my computer or CD player, but I think it would be better if it stopped after each track so I could manually play the tracks, one-by-one, and look at the book at the same time to see exactly what is being played. Hopefully, when I become a great bass player, after using this book and practicing a lot, I will be quoted on the cover :) right up there with Adam Clayton.
"Learning the bass in a funny way", I simply love the "For Dummies" book series. So, as a beginner in playing the bass, I had to purchase this book immediately and I found out that it's exactly as I expected: an introduction to the world of bass guitar, written in a funny manner, without the usual boring details that a "normal" guide would provide.
"GREAT BOOK", BOOK AND CD ARE A GREAT LEARNING TOOL BOTH WERE VERY GOOD.I RECOMEND IT FOR ANYONE JUST STARTING OUT LEARNING BASS GUITAR.
"Great learning guide", This is a great book for finger exercises and getting your hands in shape to play. In addition, I found that the discussions on theory really helped me to understand how bass player created their riffs. The only weak spot is there are not alot of songs to play with, but you can find those everywhere.
I highly recommend this book.

"It puts it all into perspective - Perfect!!", I've played bass for over ten years now, and nothing could tear me away. When I started, I had a library of "learn how" books that offered little insight, and honestly, I could've done without them. I progressed by pure instinct, acuteness of ear, and picked up bits of theory as time went by, but I was never able to tie it all together.
Thankfully, I have a philosophy, and that is that no matter how progressed you are or think you are, you can always find useful information in the simplest places. I'm no dummy, but I took a chance on this book.
If I were a beginner, I might've been lost or discouraged by the later parts of this book. Even if you are, stay the course. This book put everything into perspective for me, and I can now make total sense of all those modes and how to use them in a practical jamming environment. Music theory finally makes sense; it didn't take long after reading this book for me to see a drastic improvement in the quality of my musicianship.
Buy this book and read it. The only downside of this resource pertains to the CD that comes with it. It would've been nice to have a backing bass line to all the rhythms listed in the book. As it is, there are drums and other accompaniment instrumentation for each track. Not a big deal.
A++++
"This really is the greatest book for beginners", You cant ask for anything more for a tool to learn how to play bass. If you get this book, you will not have to spend the money on lessons because it is that informative. If you are just starting out, or if you have been playing bass for a good little while, this is a great book to have in the library.
"Great reference and after 6 years, I keep going back to it", I've been playing bass for 6 years now and I've had this book with me the whole time. It is not meant to be read straight through and that is a good thing. I can jump around to parts that interest me at that time, and I realized recently that I've almost covered the whole book now as my interests and skills have changed. And the more experience I get and the more I learn, the more different parts of the book make sense and peak my interest. It has examples of almost every style of music from country to R&B and Rock to Salsa and Reggae. Which was nice to see how the different styles are done, but use the same bass-ic (pun intended) fundamentals. It helped me realize that even though I am a rock/alternative bassist, it's really not all that different than other styles and helps me appreciate not only other bass-lines but bass players, bands, and whole genres of music in general. I pick it up from time to time and still find new things and new ways of reading into it. Great reference for bassists of all levels.
The only negative thing I can really say is that some really experienced musicians may find little value in it, and the slap-bass part is really short. Other than that, its a great book and an easy read. I can start off reading about how a simple country bass-line goes, but end up reading 20 or more pages because it is well-written and keeps things light-hearted while still being very informative. You can learn a lot in a non-threatening way.
"Bass Guitar for Dummies", Patrick Pfeiffer's book Bass Guitar for Dummies is excellent not only for the novice but the expert as well. Patrick has taken the basic concepts of learning to play the BASS and made them easy to understand. The lessons are self paced and the instructional CD that accompanies the lessons really brings the notes on the page to life. This allows the reader the chance to actually hear and feel the rhythm of the written notes. I am really enjoying this book and learning how to play my BASS.
"Excellent for the New Bassist & Great Resource for the Experienced Bassist", I have been playing bass on and off for 35 years. The thought of buying a "Dummies" book seemed foolish, however, after looking the book over and reading reviews on a bass guitar player's forum, I decided to buy it. It has been an excellent resource. I refer to it on a regular basis. Don't let the name fool you. It's great if you are just picking up the bass or if you have played a long time and could use a good overall reference book. One reviewer complained about the walking, slap and pop instruction. If he wanted a book that focused on these techniques in depth, he should have purchased books that delve deep into these areas. I have found the sections on walking, slap and pop to be relevant and an excellent foundation in these areas.
