"Good place to start"
I sure you've heard it before but don't be fooled by the title. This is a very good place to start if you have never had any training before. One thing I like is the fact that she doesn't play the piano too loudly for the exersizes. The two vocalists sound good too.Allthough the book addresses some pop techniques it seems more geared towards classical.I'm suspicious of methods that try to combine the two, such as Seth Riggs, since they are so completely different.I'm looking forward to Singing for Dummies II.The audio could be a bit louder but I am using a laptop. No big deal. You won't find all the silly endorsments like in the Riggs books.5 stars all the way.

"Exactly what I needed"
I am taking Bengali folk singing lessons. Bengali folk songs demand strong voice and wide vocal range. I tried quite a few different ways to increase my vocal range. Following the suggested instructions in this book, I have gained two notes in the upper side of the range in three weeks. I am also singing much better in the lower range. I feel that I'll continue to make improvements, if I continue to follow Pamelia S. Phillips' suggested techniques. Even though I am more familiar with Bengali music than Western music, I did not have any problem understanding this book. As a matter fact this book has taught me a lot of terms used in Western music. Accompanying CD is a big help.

"Great for beginners"
If you don't have the courage or money to go to a teacher, this is a great book. The exercises are easy and encouraging. Although I found that some of the exercises hindered more than opened my range, I know that not every exercise will work for every person and so I skip one here and there and move on. I did learn a great deal from this book and I would buy it again. Although I wouldn't take it as Bible, it is a great starting point. I am not an expert so I really can't give a more thorough review BUT I would recommend that you buy a few books to get more points of view and take something from each.
The biggest problem I have is that the 'for dummies' series does not sell or give replacement cd's. If you lose the CD, you must buy the entire book again. This is ridiculous. If you buy a book with a CD, make plenty of copies so that you have a back up or three.

"GREAT BOOK OVERALL"
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK OVERALL. AS AN ACTOR I HAVE FOUND THE TECHNIQUES HELPFUL FOR MY ACTING. THERE'S A LOT OF THEORY THOUGH (AS WITH ALL DUMMIES BOOKS) SO BE PREPARED.

"amateur's delight"
I joined a choir...I love to sing but needed help with voice exercises and breathing. I play the cd while I'm driving & do the vocal workouts then. The book is filled with helpful instructions.

What our customer's say!

"good", This book is standard nothing special. Like most books in this genre you don't leave feeling that you and tackle any songs as the exercises are weak or usually lack of them. What I would recommend is `an introduction to singing with style' I came across this book quite by accident on amazon.co.uk and it has helped me a lot. It goes into great depth about how to develop a great singing voice, vocal projection, vocal clarity and this book even tells you what diet to avoid and what food is good for healthy living it's amazing! If you're looking for vocal stamina then this book has it! It is packed with breathing techniqe too so there you have it

"Really good resource", This book is a great overview of singing for the beginner. (Not that singers are Dummies) When starting off without a teacher it is great to pull from as many resources as possible to get a feel for correct singing.

Check Out: Vocalize!

"Very Good Book", There's a lot of information in this book, so if you're looking to learn how to sing (especially for a beginner like me) this is the book to get. It will have you singing comfortably in no time.

I've immediately heard the beautiful changes, in my singing voice, even my talking voice has improved a bit. it's the voice exercises among other things I am sure.

I also got You Can Sing (with Audio CD) (You Can) but that isn't as helpful as this one.

If you like to learn how to sing, I'd also recommend getting a piano or a keyboard or some sort of musical instrument that will help you know if you're hitting the right notes.

I'd say, after you get the basics, then you can decide if you'd like to get a live singing coach. I mean if you're only singing for fun, you may not need one.

"Save your money for live singing lessons", After trying this book, I am convinced that nothing compares to live singing lessons. Although chapters are written fluidly and are an easy read, real singing improvement after finishing seems minimal compared with the effort.

"Great starting point", Great book overall. The author got to the point and didn't over-emphasize any part that wasn't important or relevant. The only reason why I can't give it 5 stars is because my voice teacher disagrees with some aspects, so until I can figure out who's right and who's wrong, I don't know which way to sway. But the CD is by far the best part. After reading the whole book and getting the recommended songs, I still do the CD occasionally. The only gripe I have about the CD is there's no just straight out warm-up session. It's all practice, no warm-ups, which would have made the CD useful after you've learned what you can from the book.

"Very Useful!", Singing for Dummies by Pamelia S. Phillips is easy to understand, and has been instrumental in my development as a singer.

"Fun, Clear and Thorough", As a private voice teacher and big fan of the "for Dummies" series of books, I found this book to be fun, clear and thorough. The Dummies series is known for its unique ability to take technically complex subject matter and break the concepts down in a simple, clear and entertaining way. This book is no exception. While Pamelia S. Phillips does a wonderful job of tackling in-depth topics, I think most beginners will have a difficult time digesting and applying all of the information.

"Interesting", As a professional singer of 30 years and a voice teacher, I found the book very interesting. The basics were there, and she did make a good point of stating that these were only suggestions (there are as many "correct and only way to sing" methods out there as there are teachers). I found nothing wrong with the book at all, except one thing --- one can't know if they are doing things correctly just because they immitate the sound their hear. One can learn a lot from a well written book on singing, and this one is very easy to understand (many are so filled with jargon the real purpose behind the instruction is lost). A real key missing in this book is the things to watch out for. An example: She mentions "Lip Trills." Some teachers really rely on these stupid exercises (where you sound like a horse blowing air through its lips, and even sing while doing them) to help the student manage breath. There are real dangers doing them without proper supervision, the least of which is a super raised larynx and a depressing tongue. Those things only ruin one's ability to sing with a free open throat and with the full range.

Most singers sing with a too wide of an "east-west" facial position and not a large enough "North-South" position. Though she slightly mentions this, in order for a person to hear themselves, they are required to use more of the "east-west" facial position thus actually making their tone louder in their ears, but quieter and less ringing to the audience. She talks about "feeling how you sing and not relying on your hearing, or on listening" but she doesn't explain how to do that. If you don't have a teacher, the only way to do it is through a very good quality tape recorder (poor quality ones give you no real image of what you sing like as they cannot record either the volume of the voice or the natural resonance of the sound; and even with an excellent recorder, you are only getting maybe 20% of your sound reflected back to you). Then you MUST figure out what is a good sound quality, when you hear it on the tape, then concentrate beyond belief on what you felt like, what sensations you had while producing that sound, and learn to reproduce those sensations all the time. Gently cupping your hands IN FRONT of you ears can reflect what the audience actually hears, but it will be softer than the sound they hear. Although testing the voice that way is fine, one must never come to rely on those things. One must rely on the feel and then when you find the correct feel to maintain it all the time, even while singing when ill.

I rated it a five star because it is well written, and it covers many aspects of singing, not just technical, and well, is very approachable. It is a good introduction to singing, but as a warning: anyone really interested in serious singing, and perhaps in a serious career, get a real teacher who can watch what you are doing, and show you when you are doing something wrong. It is very easy to immitate the correct sound, but to do it in a very incorrect way. When you are very young, you may get away with that, but your voice will not last for very long. And she doesn't make it very clear that for popular singing, even the broadway belt (belting is not loud singing, or shouting out the song, or "belting it out" like a lot of people think; it is using the voice with much more forward resonance than in classical singing, less inner dome, and with the sound very concentrated on the upper lip area; one can sing very loud, or very soft and should not be confused with the "norm" amongst young "would be stars" of just yelling and screaming their way through a song at top volume), one still needs all the same foundation they use in classical singing, but that the use of the raised soft palate is less pronounced. However, there is a correct way of working the voice that won't hurt it and brings the extreme forward focus used for Broadway into the voice; she doesn't cover this (and I think most people will use this book not to become opera singers, but so they can study a week or two and sing popular music and musical comedy). When incorrectly done, belting can ruin the voice in no time flat; a classic singer can often sing for decades with incorrect technique before real problems get out of hand; not so with a poorly produced belting tone used in popular singing or broadway; the voice dies quickly because the voice is being abused to produce that sound.

Again, a great introduction, but only an introduction to singing. One needs a second pair of ears, and a second pair of eyes, to make sure they entire body is coordinated to produce the best sound quality possible.

"Great start!", I always wanted to learn how to sing, so I picked up a copy of this book. I have been using it for a month now, and I'm actually starting to sound good (it's a lot of work, though). Overall, the content and explanations are excellent, and the CD-ROM is good, as well. I think Pamelia Phillips has done an excellent job here!

It probably shouldn't be your only source if you want to become a serious singer, however. But, it's a great start, and it should give you the confidence you need to start taking singing lessons. It might also save you considerable embarrassment.

I easily give this book 5 stars!

"A Must Buy for Anyone", About two months ago, I was attending an open-call audition for a Broadway show. I'd have to say that I would have been no where without this book! With practicing with the cd and book everyday, I could tell that my singing voice was becoming stronger and more in tune. This is a wonderful book for singers of all levels, even the tone-deaf can become singers with this!
