Others say...
"A Basic Helper only" This book is basic, as others have said. It's a good source for gamers just starting to play LOTRO, or entering regions for the first time.
I find it useful for the maps and craft and class quests. Sure there are online sites with more in-depth information and more detailed maps. Do a google search and make your pick. But unless you have a second computer or monitor (The game in full view is too awesome to shrink) next to you, the book maps are a decent reference, especially when first entering a region for the first time. The game map is empty, only showing where you are and some adjacent locations. The book gives you cities and landmarks.
As far as quest and boss locations, isn't that part of the discovery fun? Okay, okay, not always, and that's where online references can offer cheats to get past those sticky situations.
LOTR is an awesome game. Just starting the game? This book is very useful to you. Otherwise, as others have said, you may want to wait for a new edition. Of course by the time that happens will that be of any use to the veteran LOTRO user?
"A Basic Reference Guide" There are no cheats, spoilers or walkthroughs in this guide. It is a basic reference guide with handy information on each class, the skills each class receives at each level and maps of the areas. It isn't great but I find it handy as a reference for my gameplay, unlike volume II, which is a complete waste of money.
"Lacking" Overall, this book seems unfinished, as if it was rushed to release to coincide with the release of the game. Sports decent crafting and character guides for planning your professions and class, but the atlas section severely lacks. Many maps do not have any notations at all, or inadequate notations, which makes them next to useless when you are looking for a mob/mob boss, area, or point of interest. My advice: Wait for the 'revised and updated' edition.
"Fantastic" This game is absolutly fantastic. Youll be addicted to this game the moment you start it up. Its enormously addictive and after 100 hours of gameplay im still playing, happier then ever. I highly suggest this game for anyone who enjoyed games like Elder Scrolls 4 : Oblivion, World of Warcraft and any other devolpmentally based strategy game.
"Good Atlas, Lacking in Quest Help" Overall, a decent buy. I was expecting more help with quests and the like. It provides excellent strategy for every class, race, and crafting profession as well as detailed maps for every region of the game (at the time of launch).
You would be better off looking up the information online as the game is changing very quickly. The guide will be outdated by Fall 2007.

What our customer's say!
"Outdated", With all the patches/"Book"s/updates/changes that have come out since LOTRO's release, this book is quite outdated in information. Some of the training guide info is off, map areas released after original release like Evendim are not included. Is still a good book for a beginner to get the hang of some of the basics and basic maps.
"Grossly Outdated", This guide has some usefulness but is VERY VERY outdated. Many of the skills and map locations are just wrong or missing. It's an MMO. They change constantly and Turbine has been updating almost monthly. Bound guides just don't work for MMOs. Only option is to subscribe to some online strat guide that keeps up to date or just go to the LOTRO Lorebook.
"Nice book", If this book only had maps, it would be worth the price. The maps are excellent.
However, the book also has information about each class, listing the skills and even diagramming how to use them at beginner and advanced level. And there is a large section on crafting.
You can get an electronic version of this book (basically a passworded e-book) from the publishers website, which was updated. Personally, I prefer to have a paper copy. I can get updated information from many websites.
I have read reviews that criticise this book because it's doesn't contain something they had in another game, and I nearly didn't get the book because of them. But the book is great, so I guess it was just a case of "you can't please some people".
"Useful, but needs an update", It's always useful to have these Prima Guides for complicated games like LOTRO - the only shame is that I didn't get it until just around when the new expansion (Evendim) came out - I wish they would release a free supplement for people who have already bought the book.
"Very Usefull", This book is a real time saver for LOTRO players. The maps are very usefull as are the descriptions of player classes, traits, deeds, etc. It gets the beginning player off to a fast start, and is still usefull at level 50.
The game has a well developed PvP, in Monster Play. Any review that says that LOTRO does not have PvP is suspect.

"Ugh! Same Ole Same Ole", I was extremely dissapointed with this game, mostly for the fact that it just looks like every other online game I have already played,,, just within the genre of LOTR. I was honestly hoping for something unique and exciting and instead was greeted with the same hack and slash quests that you can pick up on WOW. Also very dissapointed that with advances in AI that a player still has to be reliant on finding other players to group with to finish key quests. When will we be able to play instances with hired henchmen or even better an instance that is dialed down to the number in the party and therefore reward and place appropriate challenges commesorate with that equation. After many many years after Everquest no one with the small exception of Guildwars has stepped up and given us players something entirely unique with quests that are more complex and give the player the true sense of exploration and victory. I'm just not interested anymore in producers cranking out half baked products anymore.
"Official Game Guide, not cheat book", All this book is, is a listing of all class skills, and level guides, and maps. Don't get me wrong, it is very good at what it covers, but I was hoping for more item listing. I have a level 15 Lore-Master, I know what skills he has, but I don't know how much damage he could be doing with a better staff. It is nice for planning though, you can look ahead to see what level you have to be to do what-ever-it-is-that-you-are-waiting-to-do, but thats about all the first half of the book is good for. The other half, is very nice It has maps of every where you can go, with a lot of people/places marked. As well as having a list of all the prices for rideing a horse. Did you know, from one of the Elf towns, it is 58s cheeper to go to Thorin's gate, and go from there to Bree, then to go straght to Bree? I did not, but I do now.
ALl in all, its a good book, but not Very Good.
"guide has some good maps in the back of book", just got he guide today. i see the guide has some good map's in the back of the book which i will be useing. finding quest givers to turn in quest and places to go can be a pain ,so the map's should help, locations are marked on the map.
"this book is bad - won't help you get ahead at all", the manual that arrived with the game was more informative than this sad book. there are NO QUEST descriptions and doesn't even explain destiny points. the artwork is fuzzy from bad blowups of ingame screen shots. don't waste your money on this one. very disapointing
"I had no idea what to expect...", ..when I signed up for the open beta of LOTR Online, but within 15 minutes I was hooked. I've been a MMORPG player for about 8 years now, and while I used to be a hardcore EQ player (and played many different MMO's since then), I've started to realize that I'm leaning towards more casual games nowadays.
I won't be the only person to say this: the game is an awful lot like World of Warcraft. I don't play much WoW anymore, but I can't deny that the game gets a lot stuff right (and has really raised the bar for online RPGs). It seems like the folks at Turbine studied Blizzard's formula and improved upon it (in-game musical jam sessions!). NOw, I know a lot of gamers are out there looking for the big "warcraft killer" game, but I'm just looking for something new and fun - and I finally found it.
Ever better, the game is set in Middle Earth! From the books and movies, I feel like I know the place well, but I still get a thrill from actually getting to explore every corner of the Shire (which is sprawling) all the way to some of the series fabled dungeons. In case you're wondering: the game developers licensed the books - not the films - so there'll be some minor differences if that's the Tolkien you're used to. To me, the game doesn't seem like the books, nor the movies, but rather like you're playing in a computerized version of those awesome Hildebrand LOTR illustrations. And while you're able to interact with major characters (Gandalf, Frodo, Bildo, Strider) it seems sorta plausible because of the time period. You get to meet Tom Bombadil, who I know a ton of people would love to run into (and sorely missed in the movie adaptaions).
Positives: cool cut scenes in key quests, player playable music instruments for impromptu jam sessions, gorgeous scenery that runs on most systems, a wicked-fun instanced PVP game ("monster battles"), and INTEGRATED VOICE CHAT.
Negatives: too many Hobbits running around Middle Earth, no PVP, limited race selection and no evil characters.
All in all, I'd recommend this game to anyone looking to try a MMO, or find a new one. I've only made it to level 15 so far, so I can't speak much about higher level content, but even as I write this review Turbine is leaking details about the game's first content update, which is set to come out this summer.
Also, I just did a quest where I met all these nice people, only to have to go back and bury them later after a terrible battle. How rad is that?
