"A Must for Any Jazz Player"
My jazz professor at school recommended this book and I found Amazon's price to be unbeatable. Since this book was published by Hal Leonard, it has become more widely available and affordable to all musicians. Any jazz musician should invest in this book. I am just beginning to study jazz piano and "The Real Book" has been an invaluable resource. The spiral binding is strong and the pages stay open without difficulty. All songs are one page so there is no need for page turns. The music is scripted in Jazz manuscript. There are plenty of songs to please a variety of tastes.

The only complaint I have heard from other musicians is that this book contains more Broadway tunes than older editions and omits some of the jazz classics that were found in older editions. However, I do not own a previous edition, and am finding this edition to be an excellent addition to my repertoire. This book is worth the investment for all levels of jazz musicians. There is not another book like this on the market.

"Jazz player's Bible"
If you play jazz, you will eventually have to have a real book. If you play a C instrument, this is probably the one you need. If you don't play jazz and haven't got a good musical foundation to build on, you won't be able to do much with this book without the help of a good instructor. If you just want some chords and notes for some tunes, there might be cheaper, better solutions (but I doubt it). Invariably, this will be missing one or two tunes that you really like, that you really thought were jazz standards, that you were sure would be in this book but are not, in which case, empty your tip jar and check out editions like The Real Book - Volume II: C Instruments 2nd Edition (Real Books (Hal Leonard)).

"Five stars for legality, minus 4 for presentation"
If you are a working jazz musician, you will play countless gigs out of the Real Book. However, good luck getting through those gigs with this book if all of your bandmates are using the old illegal version (which, trust me, 99% of them will). This book is NOT a replica of the illegal version and does NOT include numerous crucial tunes that WILL be called on a bandstand. If you rely on this book, you will be in trouble. Best thing to do is to forget books like this entirely and actually learn tunes by ear off recordings.

"Great compilation"
Pretty much every jazz standard is here, and the chords are finally accurate. I'd recommend it for anybody trying to put together a jazz set!

What our customer's say!

"as described", It arrived in mint condition within two weeks even though I live in the EU.

"A Necessity for Jazz Musicians", Put simply, if you want to play jazz, you need to know the tunes in this book. My guitar teachers have given mixed reviews of some of the arrangements of the tunes, but nonetheless, the Real Book is a must-have for any serious jazz musician.

"Accurate and easy", I am very pleased with The Real Book, 6th edition. It is clearly formatted, the chords are all proper, and the song selection is diverse. This is a great book for newbies to jazz and seasoned six string vets as well. I would not hesitate to recommend it to either.

"The best way to get into jazz guitar", i really like this book it is essential to all aspiring and accomplished jazz musicians

"HOLD ON....DON'T trash your volume 5 copy yet!!!", Please read.... I'm glad that Hal Leonard has seen fit to correct many keys and chord changes with this 6th edition. I'm also glad the typeset is consistent and clear. HOWEVER, the reason for such a low score is what HL professes in it's advertising. Here is the quote from Hal Leonard in regard to the consistency of the older editions verses this new "legal" one...

"You won't even notice the difference, other than that all of the notorious errors have been fixed: the covers and typeface look the same, the song list is nearly identical...."

How can the song list be "nearly identical" when in fact 121 songs from the previous edition are GONE? To further make the book confusing to consumers, and presumably in an effort to make the book "look" as full as the previous edition, 86 new, unrelated tunes have been added as padding to the table of contents list.

What makes this an issue of concern is that of the 121 tunes missing are well-known, critical tunes that WILL be called on at gigs. Apparently a few of the copyright owners didn't see fit to jump on board the HL band wagon. I would have been fine with this book if it hadn't been passed off as being the same as the previous edition, but with corrections and the old list in tact.

If you REALLY want the best of both worlds, you'll have to buy the new HL version, and then add the missing tunes from the old one to the HL one (it's plastic comb bound, so that task can easy be done at Kinko's for close to nothing). I suppose the only issue beyond this would be the conflicting of keys and song form for some tunes if others musicians at your gig still operate out of the old edition.

This has been a real mess trying to decode the Real Book bottom line. As much of a multi-million dollar corporation Hal Leonard is, they could have saved us the hassle by disclosing these VERY CRUCIAL discrepancies up front.

"5th Edition is gone--WE HAVE NO CHOICE!!!", I've heard a lot of jazz players complain about the "legal" edition of the Real Book. It is missing a handful of tunes and some say the changes are "wrong" on a lot of tunes. Others say that the changes for those tunes are "wrong" in the old 5th Edition and the 6th Edition is a timely, welcome correction. Perhaps it would be more accurate on both ends to say that the changes in the two versions of the books are different; Any melody note works with any cord, just functioning as different upper extension. Some options are simply tastier than others. If you don't like the changes, pencil in something different. In any case, now that you don't have to deal with black market production to get the thing, it's only around twenty bucks.

What you should really do is get your hands on at least a dozen different fake books, compare changes on all the different tunes and memorize them. When was the last time you went to hear one of your jazz heros in concert and saw them flop a Real Book down on the stand? It doesn't happen and I'll tell you why: Time spent with your nose in a music stand is time not spent zoning in on the bass player's right hand and the groove swinging on the ride; you can't really put it in the pocket unless your paying close attention, watching and listening to the band.

This book is a good resource for initially learning tunes, but let's get on with it and learn the tunes so we can leave the books home. The magic happens when everyone hears it and feels it together. No fake book will help you with that, no matter what edition it is.

"Gets the job done", It's the Real Book, everyone knows of it and most musicians own it. A great library of standards and tunes that will keep you playing for a long time. Wonderful for the amateur jazz musician. I assume most professionals already own it.

"More Than Enough Jazz", Excellent edition. The music is clearly laid out and easy to read. There's more than enough music to keep any jazz musician busy for the rest of their lives! All the standards and more. Also recommend Volume 2.

"A Great Choice for Musicians", The Real Book is a Musician's best friend. It is a reference guide to some of the best standards know to man. Whether just jammin with your friends, or playin alone, this book is highly reccommended. I have played many pieces out of this Real Book for each of these stated purposes, and many more. Not only does this Real Book give you more selections of music to play, it allows you to broaden your musical ability, by learning more styles and chords.

"Essential for any Jazzer", This is one of the best books out there. It has just about every standard (and there's a second book if you cant find the song you want). Big font, alphabetical order, and a table of contents. The only annoying thing is that they switch up chord symbols sometimes. E.g. half-diminished might be written -7 b5 or the "o" with the slash through it. Stuff like that-- but i figure it just keeps me on my feet.
