Others say...
"100 Words Almost Everyone Confuses" An excellent introduction to commonly misused words. Although basic, the book could be a useful tool for the average speaker and writer of English.
"Could of passed..." To me, this book was simply a dictionary of 100 words sorted in alphabetical order. What I was hoping for was a book that would describe the common misuses of words and separate out differences between misused words. Instead, it seems each word was just simply stated and then defined. It's a great book to simply read about words and their meanings, but just wasn't what I expected. Not an expensive book, so I'm not complaining too much.
"Terrible!" If you need this book, you will not understand it. If you understand it, you don't need it! Unless you were the one student in thousands whose jaw dropped in rapt fascination when your seventh-grade teacher diagrammed the parts of speech, you will not follow the alleged explanations in this book. The explanations come straight out of that seventh-grade grammar text. Such and such a word is the intransitive past participle of another word. There, that cleared it up, didn't it! There is almost never a simple declarative sentence about how to use a confusing word... here is a lovely example from page 88...
"The adjective precipitate and the adverb precipitately were once applied to physical steepness but are now used primarily of rash, headlong actions. Precipitous currently means "steep" in both literal and figuratrive senses: 'the precipitous rapids of the upper river; a precipitous drop in commodity prices.' But precipitous and precipitously are also frequently used to mean "abrupt, hasty," which takes tham into territory what would ordinarily belong to precipitate and precipitately..."
Hope that cleared it up for you!
This book suffers from "junior high math teacher's syndrome," where if you didn't understand the problem, and found the courage to raise your hand, the teacher just looked at you as if you'd just gotten off the special-ed bus and repeated exactly the same indecipherable explanation using the exact same words, only slightly slower and with more condescension.
The writers of this book are dictionary editors, and therefore presume that telling us the part of speech and Greek or Latin derivation will make things clear. They do not. I write for a living, in part. I do not think I found one confusing word clarified by this book in a way I will incorporate in my work.
"Great Desktop Reference for Writers of all Categories" Anyone who writes, be it for business or pleasure can surely benefit from this slim 100-word volume presented by the American Heritage Dictionary people who have prepared other such guides like "100 Words Every High School Graduate Should Know" An "100 Words Every High School Freshman Should Know."
Instead of targeting SAT word-building wannabees, this book presents a quick desktop reference for those words that when mispelled and misused in writing, perilously changes the meaning of the sentence. My personal bete noir pairs--- "effect" versus "affect", "augur" and "auger" and "lie" and "lay"--- are covered here starting with a simple definition, explanation of the part of speech, etymology, related words, sentence examples and most importantly ends with a usage problem label that warns the writer of possible difficulties when applying the word in a sentence.
All words are alphabetically listed meaning that confusing pairs like "affect" and "effect" will not necessarily be discussed sequentially. However, the usage note will alert the writer to the word's most confused mate and direct one to the appropriately numbered (1-100)word.
The book does not contain an index where the confused pairs could have been listed together as another form of possible language misusage nor does it provide cross-referenced page numbers. However, the wealth of information provided for each word makes the $4.95 fee for purchase a worthy and timeless value.
Bottom line: "100 Words almost Everyone Confuses $ Misuses" is a great reference for any writer, particularly those for whom English is a second language. Recommended for all who write.
"Recommended" The whole family can readily appreciate 100 Words Almost Everyone Misuses & Confuses: the format lends to browsing but highlights and outlines selected 100 words, presenting their definitions, common usage, and examples. The focus on how these selections are commonly misused adds impact and clarification.

What our customer's say!
"Fun to flip through", This is cute book that is fun to flip through and keep with your dictionary. It is essentially just a small dictionary and beyond definitions doesn't go into detail on entomology.
"Easy Encyclopedia of Misused Ordinary Words", "100 Words Almost Everyone Confuses and Misuses" is meant for the closet lexicographer, or self-righteous vocabularies junkies like myself who love to watch TV and laugh at the errors of speakers. Naturally, we want to protect ourselves from the same fate, and here's where the editors of the American Heritage Dictionaries have helped us out.
100 words are here, from adverse to zoology. All will be familiar, but not all will be known. Troubling words, like 'discreet' and 'discrete,' are not only defined thoroughly, but clearly, with examples in common speech. Misuses are explained, and, before we become too smug, we discover words we too have confused.
Words like 'impeach' are included. In this case, it is not because there is a homonym, but because its definition has been misunderstood in popular language.
You will not invest either much time or money in this tiny treasure, but you might learn something. I have, and so then, I fully recommend "100 Words Almost Everyone Confuses and Misuses."

"I got 88 Words almost everyone confuses & misuses", Before mailing my book to me, someone took the liberty of making the book shorter by detaching a few pages from the spine. Oh well. It's a good toilet reader. If you already have a strong English background then you probably won't benefit much from what this has to offer. There were very few words I came across that I confuse or misuse; irregardless was one of them.
"I Didn't Like the Layout...", It was hard to find certain words, and related/confused words that should appear together in the book are pages apart. I did find quite a bit of the information helpful, but finding it is a pain. That pretty much rules out making this a handy 'go to' reference book...
"Words Some People Confuse", Not for advanced readers. This is pretty rudimentary stuff and is really for someone who doesn't read or write much. Price and format are both good. Might be a good gift for a high school student who is daunted by English courses.

"A Great Gift For Students And Writers Of All Ages", Should you use affect or effect, principal or principle, discrete or discreet. This book explains 100 words such as these which are confused and misused. Students and business writers will be able to enhance their standings and their self confidence using this book as a handy reference. The book is affordable and would even make a good stocking stuffer. Most likely you will buy two copies, one for a student and one for yourself.
"My compliments to a perfect complement to writing well.", If you've ever had the argument with yourself or another whether it was "insure" or "ensure" you know that after a minute of deliberation - they both seem correct. This book gives comprehensive definitions and usage examples for word sets like these, and always casts the tie-breaking vote, so you can write with more confidence with a minimal amount of research time.
This is a great book for even the most confident and competent writer, and for a tiny volume packs a big punch, requiring almost no time to fully explore usage conventions for commonly misused words, then offering concise, decisive advice as to which word in the pair most aptly applies, including, as is sometimes the case with "insure" and "ensure," when both may be technically correct, but one is preferred. Clearly cross referenced, thorough, and easy to use, the 100 words are well chosen and presented.
A lot of little reference books, especially word books, seem to be written more for novelty or get mired down in a lot of frippery, but this book is an actual workhorse, something that will get used, and often. A great book for anyone who writes for business or pleasure, as well as students and even copy editors. I've only had it two weeks and already use it more than my dictionary. I highly recommend this to anyone.
"I still get confused by LIE and LAY....", ...and I've finally found something I can keep close at hand for moments like that. 100 Words Almost Everyone Confuses and Misuses is an awesome reference source that takes up very little desk space and is easily kept handy for moments when you are wondering whether you are seeking a "discreet" or "discrete" affair, or if a combustible gas is "flammable" or "inflammable." Moreover each entry carefully explains the origins of the word, the controversies over usage, and the proper context for a particular use of a word. Every entry has a note, although some of the notes are cross-references to another word where the full explanation is found ("flammable" for example, references "inflammable"). This is a great gift for the student or writer in your life, or for anyone who cares about correct word usage!
"Not bad - but somewhat lacking", I really enjoyed much of the book and learned something from it. The best thing about the book is the detailed information presented on some words as to how they are used and why they were chosen. This adds a great deal of interest and information. The biggest shortcoming of the book is that only some of the words have explanatory information - and one is left to wonder why some other words even made it and what is the point of their being there. Given that it is such a short book and has only 100 words chosen for it, one wonders why more detailed and interesting information wasn't included for all of the entries. I'd say the writers just got lazy and used many of the 100 words for "fill". Given its price, it isn't bad, but it isn't what it could and should have been with just a tiny bit more effort.
