"Shorebird Guide " An excellent shorebird guide. The best I have ever owned. Extremely helpful in teaching you HOW to identify shorebirds.
"The Shorebirds of North America" Haven't seen The Shorebird Guide, sounds wonderful, but I found no reference, in the 17 or 18 reviews, to Bob Clem's Shorebirds of North America(1967). I find paintings, from Peterson to Sibley, much more satisfing than photographs: there is something in a painting that captures the soul of the bird that the photo just can't do. And then Pete Matthiessen wrote the text for Bob's paintings. A dynamic duo! Just went to a "Wine and Woodcocks" event at JEDSAS, an Audubon sanctuary across the creek from our village of Neavitt, in Maryland. I look forward to seeing their copy of The Shorebird Guide. But why do we forget such a classic shorebird book that was only 40 years ago?
"This is indeed THE guide to shorebirds" This is perhaps the best bird family guide that I've seen. It is definitely the best identification guide to this difficult group of birds. The book focuses more on size and shape rather than plumage. Therefore, the photos aren't like other guides. They are not all uniformly sized super close-up shots of a single bird. Instead they are sized to better emphasize certain characteristics. They often show multiple birds of different species so as to give a better comparison of size, shape, and plumage.
One of the best features of the guide is the questions in some captions. Most species have at least one question in one of their photo captions. The questions ask the reader to do such things as identify some of the species in the photo, or to pick out one particular species among all the birds present. The answers are contained in an appendix in the back. These questions force the reader to apply the knowledge and techniques imparted by the authors and look more critically and actively at the photograph.
I can't recommend this book enough.
"the shorebird guide" Excellent coverage on shorebirds....good fotos with comparative fotos really outstanding....any serious birder in the tropics can get great value out of this book
"A Definitive Guide for Birders" This book describes a new approach for identifying birds and applies it to the specific case of Shore birds (which can be difficult to identify). There are many photographs for each species. It includes photos of different species together to give the birder a clear indication of the differences (size, color, etc) between similar species. All in all I like this different approach to bird identification.

What our customer's say!
"A Testament To The Progression Of Bird Identification", Over the past few years an avant-garde style of bird identification has arisen. The classic "Peterson Identification Method" (much revered by bird lovers, instrumental in the formation of birding itself, and still highly useful), which stresses the importance of unique "field marks" is slowly ceding to a new holistic approach (also known as GISS: General Impression of Shape and Size).
This guide is at the forefront of that movement, along with Pete Dunne's Essential Field Guide Companion, and should be on the shelf of any birder who wishes to improve his or her identification skills. Novice birders often wonder at the mastery of experts who can identify birds far away immediately without raising their binoculars; such ability can only come with experience, but this book offers valuable insight into that esoteric ability.
"The Shorebird Guide", This is the Bird ID book that can stay on the coffee table. Pages and pages of wonderful pictures of shorebirds make up the front section of the book. Let me be quick to point out if you are looking for gulls or terns they will not be in this book. This is a book about the small brownish birds ( sometimes called Peeps) that can be seen on our shores. Sanderlings, sandpipers, Godwitts, Dunlin, and our rapidly declining Red Knots are the subjects of this book. If you want to know shore birds this is the book.
"Peterson's The Shorebird Guide", This book was extremely helpful for identifying shorebirds. It shows them on the ground close up, in flight and in flocks. Detailed descriptions of status, taxonomy, behavior, migration, molt and vocalizations. Photography is excellent. If you live on or near water and need a guide, this is the one!
"Amazing!", I bought this book for my uncle who LOVES bird watching and he is amazed with this book! It offers a lot of information many other books don't. I highly recommend purchasing this for the bird lover! :)
"The Definitive Guide to ShoreBirds", Of all of the information available that involves Shorebirds, this book is equal to none. It provides the most organized and complete understanding of the complicated life cycles of these birds. The photograpy is excellent not only in its quality but also in its visualizations of the different life cycles. The book advances how we look upon these types of birds by drawing refined attention to their life cycles and their ecosystems. This is a must have for all birders libraries.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"The Shorebird Guide", I have both TSG and Shorebirds of North America (Dennis Paulson). I haven't read both thoroughly, but I'm more drawn to TSG because it has range maps and because the silhouette guides on the back cover are immensely helpful, particularly for beginners. It's nice to have both when faced with troublesome identifications, but just glancing through them, TSG seems much more comprehenisve. I recommend it as the "first purchase" for shorebird lovers and budding shorebird lovers.
"The shorebird guide", Excellent pictures of shorebirds in various plumages. Helps with ID in the field. Good descriptions of behaviors also.
"An excellent but quirky guide.", If you are a real shorebird enthusiast, or simply enjoy looking at great bird photographs, this would be a great book for you. If you want a straightforward reference for field identification, this may not be the book for you.
The book has two main sections: Species Photos (with copious identification notes and range maps, and Species Accounts. The photo section is subdivided into "Domestic Species" and ""Rarities and Regional Specialties". The photos in the book are wonderful, so it is fun to look through even if you are not trying to learn anything. Many of the photos are excellent for learning how to identify particular species and many others help to illustrate particular behaviors. Other photos are beautiful, but not very useful for illustrating identification features or behavior.
The text is also excellent. Although the authors profess to use a holistic approach to identification, there is plenty of attention to specific details. For example, in the notes for the White-rumped Sandpiper: "all plumages may show unique reddish or brownish base to lower mandible". Many photos show multiple species and there are little quizzes mixed in with the identification notes.
I often carry this book in my car when I'm out birding, but the book would be rather large and heavy to carry in the field. I dislike the separate sections for "Domestic Species" and ""Rarities and Regional Specialties". It would be much easier to compart similar species (like Wilson's Snipe and Common Snipe) if the photos for the two species were adjacent to eachother. I find the quizzes are fun, but they may not be to everyone's taste. Taking quizzes would be fine for home, but the quizzes might just get in the way if you were trying to use this bood in the field. This is a great book, but if you want a straigtforward reference for shorebird identification better suited for carrying in the field, you might prefer "Shorebirds of North America: The Photographic Guide" by Dennis Paulson.
"Simply stunning", The book has stunning photos that truly show the birds as they would be seen in real life. The use of mini "quizzes" throughout the book set it apart from other books like it. The book is a learning tool vs. only a reference tool. The descriptions are easy to follow. The range maps are clear and the layout is easy to understand. This is the birding book of the year.
"Another good approach to Shorebird I.D.", Superior photography to other shorebird guides on the market. Images of mixed species flocks for comparison makes this guide very useful for real life situations. Consistent and well thought-out layout. Probably not best thought of as a field guide, but rather a study guide and a 'get-back-to-the-car reference.'
