"A good introduction" Although I have not plowed through this entire book yet, it is shaping up as one of the books I've been looking for to tie up all the different threads that now make up the task of creating a good website. I may never actually create my business website all on my own, but at least I will have familiarity with the various tools that are currently being used so I can intelligently discuss and understand what the professionals are recommending. One of the toughest parts of learning any new technology these days is the constant improvement and changes going on. It's impossible to guess what may become standard and what may be obsolete by the time I finish the book. Books like this at least give an average person like me a fighting chance to keep as current as possible without continuous formal education.
"Pleasantly surprised" I am a design student, and have not yet learned web design, or how to build a website. I purchased this book to teach myself the basics of web design. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the language was to understand. I have not yet finished the book, but will continue to use it in the future.
"Great Introduction Book" LEARNING WEB DESIGN is an excellent start to an understanding of how html works and what building websites is all about. Without getting too much into the specifics, and stopping before diving into more complicated items such as forms, and book builds a get over-all picture. If you're looking to become a professional, self-taught web designer, you probably want another guide. But if you are simply trying to build a personal web page and get started on a road to web design as a hobby, then this book is great.
The book comes with a CD, complete with trial versions of software, but I found the WYSIWYG HTML editor NVU very handy. Best of all, it is a free-ware program. Additionally, I found GIMP, a image editing software also very handy. Both of these can be found by a simple Google search.
"Worth The Effort To Understand" Although the book is positioned as a Beginner's Guide you really need to have some basic understanding or feel for html coding to make the most of it. After using it for about 2 years I finally think I know what I'm looking at. Ms. Niederst explains some things really well, e.g., text, inserts, use of graphics, html limitations and tables. Her tie ins to FrontPage, Go Live and Dreamweaver are hard to follow (for me, anyway) because they do not match the Dreamweaver version I have. But, I've adjusted to these differences. I use the book every time I work on my website and I'm happy to have it.
"A good place to start" The best thing about this book is that it is very readable to someone who has little or no background in web design; it covers a lot of territory and lays the information out in layman's terms. The caveat is that, having been published in 2001, some of the info is a little dated -- for example, I understand that the FONT tag is an older standard that is being abandoned in favor of Cascading Style Sheets. But a beginner has to start somewhere, and I got a lot out of this book.

What our customer's say!
"Best Book on Learning Web Design EVER!!", Okay, I haven't read many. But I am about as web literate as it takes to fool around with some link and image codes on my blogs. When I first picked it up, it seemed like she got into much more detail than I would be able to digest or would even want to! But once I started reading it, the explanations are so clear that I haven't been intimidated by a single exercise yet! I've done every exercise so far with so much ease I'd mistake myself for a genius if I didn't know any better. I've only had the book for three days and I'm already on the tables section! Now, I admit, I only picked up the book so that I could learn to build a very, simple website. I know enough now to take that a step or two further. I'm sure that to get the terminology down, I'll have to give the book a second read and re-visit here and again for brushing up on some things. But, I don't consider that a draw back. It's more like a book to grow with. Hands down, the author has done an excellent job in my opinion. I've read some reviews about the code typos and not being able to get the code to work because of typos. All I can say is that the explanations are so clear that the typos become so apparent that you can figure out why the code didn't work and fix it yourself.
"Be sure to get the 3rd Edition!", Hi. This is Jennifer Robbins, the author of Learning Web Design. If you are interested in this title, I highly recommend that you get the Third Edition which is now available. A LOT has changed in the way web sites are built since the second edition of the book was published, and I'd hate for anyone to be getting out-of-date information. Learning Web Design: A Beginner's Guide to (X)HTML, StyleSheets, and Web Graphics
"Amazing!", For those looking to start web design this is the book to get. It says illustrated but it should say illustrations on every page. Very very illustrated. One of my favorite things about this book is after every chapter(when HTML is disscused)it provides an appendix showing you the html tags you just learned. Useful as a reference. This book does not leave you hanging. It teaches you every thing you need to create and understand basic websites. About half the book introduces you to html tags and the other portion is about web graphics. Jenn's style of writting is not boring but is often humerous and cozy. I have created 4 websites after reading this book. Buy this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Excellent resource to get a website up and running", I needed to understand how domain names and webhosting worked, plus design, program, test, and implement a website quickly. This book was perfect -- extremely well-organized, with a good Table of Contents and index, excellent examples and helpful (but not overwhelming) reference tables. The book had sufficient detail that I could get graphics loaded and use some CSS to make my text look more professional. I launched a good-looking, no-frills site for a club without any fancy animation, and got it up and running in a less than a month of evenings and weekends. The demo software (BBEdit) was invaluable to getting me started. Good treatment as well of issues with .gif, .jpeg, and .png files, and I feel that I can still learn more from this text should I want to make the site more sophisticated. The discussion of tables was especially clear. I recommend this book for anyone, even if you've never designed your own site or written a lick of html. Those wanting to do online forms to allow users to submit data will need to learn Javascript.
"Learning Web Design: A Beginner's Guide to HTML", This is this first "How To" book I ever read cover to cover. It works. It is well written, and breaks concepts down without making you feel like a "dummy". It's perfect for a novice like me.
So many things that were a mystery to me were explained. I now can do rollover buttons, animations, add music, etc. But most important is the Web design concepts this book drives home. It teaches how to make a balanced, well structured, and most importantly, user friendly web page. I highly recommend this book.

"This book is EXCELLENT for beginners", This book is the ideal book for absolute beginners and/or people that already have a basic understanding to build on your knowledge. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to learn about Web Design and HTML.
"Probably one of the best beginner's HTML book", I actually got hold of this book through my younger sibling who took a web design course in high school. I pretty much taught myself HTML through the internet, and I already had a good understanding of XHTML and CSS when I read this book.
It's a good book, easy to read and understand, that goes through all of the basics of web design, with all of the important elements like HTML, CSS, and image creation discussed fairly thoroughly. The last few sections include sort of a preview of other things like DHTML, Flash, and the sort. This probably will be a "gateway" book into the world of web design for most people that read it.
"Wonderful Starting Point for Webmasters", Want to learn what's important for you to learn? This is the book for you. A bit confused by my question? This book may be slightly difficult reading.
Where do I start? How the web works, getting your pages on the web, the web design process, what you don't need to worry about knowing, HTML, web graphics, do's and dont's....it's all in this information-packed book and worth the time to read. If you're looking for a simplistic and quick read to get you on your way, keep looking. If you're seriously wanting to read and learn, get this book. You'll be happy you did.
"The undisputable starting point in Web Design!", Your background is Publishing or Information Technologies and you need more knowledge on Web Design, then this book is most certainly among the best starting point. You will gain an understanding of how the Web works, including a working knowledge of markup languages and more specifically HTML, the importance of graphic design, the functions of the server and the major role of the browser. This book does an outstanding job at addressing these topics. The text is well structured, simple and easy to read. It will not bring the reader to an expert level but will allow the creation of a basic Web site. By performing the practical exercises used by the author, you will discover that the learning process is easier than you thought. Jean C. Ducharme, PMP
"Excellent "Beginners' Web Design Manual"", What I love about this book is the author's gentle approach to teaching the readers about designing your own web site, whether it's a personal or for business use. The book's first part deals with "how to get started," how the World Wide Web and the Internet works, uploading your web site pages, and the steps involved in designing a page.
There's also several chapters about HTML, from creating a simple page, Cascading Style Sheets (very well explained), and also creating tables and frames, which to the uninitiated can seem like a daunting task. There's even a chapter about "web colors," and you can spend a lot of time playing around with and deciding on colors you want for your web site. There's also a lot of discussion about web graphics, and the differences between JPG's and GIF's and their ideal uses.
Clearly the author covers a lot of material in this book and leaves the reader with an excellent overall idea of constructing web pages.
