Others say...
"Good, Sound Advice . . . . ." First and foremost, the book was an easy read. The fashion that the writer conveys is one that is friendly and almost partnership-like. He certainly conveys a 'been there, done that' type of stance. Perhaps the most useful part of the book was the spending plan that the writer utilizes. While I was reading the book, I kept looking for the one 'thing' that would be part of the plan or 'the plan' to assist with one's debt woes. This spending plan and financial record is it. Other than that, I felt the book was one of lack-luster motivational paragraphs comparable to a support group. Overall, a good read and I would recommend only as part of one's arsenal. Not a magic pill.
"For all those with spending issues" This book is the unofficial handbook for people with spending/debting issues. Helps set -up a budget and addresses related issues. I am reordering it cause lost other one and need to go thru it again.
"Easy and thoughtful way to clear your debt and free your life" What I liked best about this book is that it's real. It doesn't sugar-coat the frustration and even embarrasment that you can feel when you find yourself 30,000 or more in debt. But it doesn't simply rub your hand and tell you to "manifest" prosperity either. Frankly, putting too much energy into the law of attraction is likely how we get ourselves into all this debt - trying to be like "everyone" else.
I digress.
The book puts out some straightforward steps for you to follow. Follow them and you'll eventually get out of debt. Not tomorrow. And without having to pay some userer for "debt consolidation counseling" either. But it's work.
I liken it to losing weight - you have to change you're whole mindset and make small, positive changes every day in order to acheive your goal. The same principles apply here. Make changes every day. Don't debt any more and follow the plan. No magic bullet - but haven't you realized they don't work anyway?
"LIVING PROOF" Just 6 years ago (2001), I found myself under crushing student loan and credit card debt. You would be blown away by how much debt I'd amassed. I'd lost my job and the creditors were calling. My life quickly fell apart. I was depressed, anxious and mentally paralyzed, not knowing how to take back control. Creditors were calling every five minutes it seemed, yelling at me, threatening me. I was broke, and broken-hearted at where things were in my life. I even had to move back in with my parents which was humiliating. I read a lot of books on finances and two of them made all the difference in the world, "How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt and Live Prosperously," and "Rich Dad Poor Dad." "Rich Dad" was about concepts and changing the paradigm of how I looked at money. "How to Get Out of Debt" was very, very specific with HOW to get out of debt and GET RICH SLOWLY. Reading "How to Get Out of Debt" was like my first day of sobriety. I had no idea that I even had this debting habit, as dumb as that may sound. I was reading the book, going "wow--that's me!" I applied the BACK TO BLACK principles, day by day, month by month, year by year. And now, 6 years later, I celebrate my first full year of ownership in my first home--which seemed an impossible dream just two years ago. I own my car outright. I have zero credit card debt. And my overall student loan debt has been reduced by at least 40%. I pay cash that I've saved for things that I need. I PAY MYSELF FIRST! (this is a key principle in both books). And believe it or not, I haven't had a credit card in about 10 years now--I use a Visa checkcard. Without a credit card I've traveled to Europe, Mexico and Central America, rented cars, and paid for emergencies. And I don't live impoverished. I just live within my means, and pay cash with money saved. It's a complete myth that you need a credit card to survive. This book helped me to understand that. It was also very specific as to what happens if a creditor takes you to court or ruins your credit, which are probably the two biggest threats they have over you. Knowledge made all those things less scary. Ultimately, I would say this book is about how to replace unhealthy money habits with healthier ones. If this book cost $1,000, it would still be worth it. At $10, it's a blessing.
"Please read, it will teach you how to help yourself" If you are like me and you are trying to pay your bils and debts in a responsible and timely manner..this book is for you. I have read some of the other " financial authors" out there and I always felt lost and that there advice was just out of my needs..this book was right on. After I followed the spending plan record ( Wow, do you honestly want to know what you are spending, this will open your eyes) and wrote all my debts down in black and white, I feel that I can tackle all my money issues in a clear and concise manner. After following this plan, I am now ready to move on to retirement planning, college savings, etc. If you are trying to get through today so you can get to tomorrow, this financial guide is for you.

What our customer's say!
"Okay okay....", I haven't yet read this book but plan on buying it based on the fact that it has better reviews than the one by Kevin Trudeau whose informercial I just finished watching and also just finished reading reviews on his book. I noticed that in the infomercial he says you can eliminate your debt so you can get a credit card or loan which to me makes it sound like he's working for the people who conspire to keep America's most needy and desperate, as well as sometimes ignorant people in debt. Why the heck would you get a credit card or loan right after getting out of debt? That's just going to get you right back in the same situation you started out in! I originally wasn't going to watch the infomercial but I am so desperate to help my mother who is drowning in debt despite having paid off her credit cards twice before. I am also looking for some help myself because I have some debt myself and it's only going to get worse once I have to start paying off my student loans. I try to get as much financial aid in grants as possible since those don't need to be repaid but they don't come close to covering my education expenses. I have always wondered why it is that someone who wants to attend college and better themselves and therefore reduce the likelyhood that they will need to be on Food Stamps or a program like that are punished in the form of actually having to PAY to do better for themselves? Why isn't college free like all other education that comes before it?! But that's the good ol' United States for ya I guess. Anyhow, I'll update my review once I order the book and see how much it helps.
"Great, but would love to see an updated edition", While I thought this book was fantastic for those who have a problem with deprivation, debt, or compulsive spending and is a great introduction to Debtors Anonymous, I think several of the ideas at its foundation are no longer applicable.
Mundis stresses that not paying your bills for 30 days or not making the minimum payment on your bills doesn't really matter if you no longer intend to debt. Who cares if you ruin your credit score if you don't use credit anymore, right? Maybe that was the case in the 1970s, but now credit scores are used for almost everything. Your credit score will affect your life even if you never borrow another dime.
Your credit record is pulled when you rent an apartment, sign up for utilities (electric, water, etc.), apply for an insurance policy, apply for a checking or savings account, or even apply for a job. True, you can still rent from a landlord who does not check credit and includes utilities with the rent. You may be able to find a job at a place that doesn't check credit. You may be able to pay a large deposit to get an apartment or utilities with poor credit. But more likely, you'll end up in an overpriced slum, severely limit your job prospects, and lose 30% of your paycheck because you have to cash it at a checking cashing store rather than your bank.
I would be interested to see what sort of modifications, if any, would be included in the program given the fact that credit truly affects nearly every aspect of life now - not just the ability to debt.
"It's Great!!", This book is GREAT!! I personally LOVE the way it is written..with the wording as a "recovery program" would have...Reminding yourself everyday of certain things. Along with that, the principles make sense, and as the author says - they have worked for many others. I read a few of the "bad" reviews, and it seems those people have others who they follow for their advice. That's fine, but this book and this author work for me, and i enjoy the way it's written and the steps and beliefs. It's not an expensive book, so i say if you have debt problems, or spending problems, pick this book up and read it!
"best of it's kind", This is the best guide to managing money and debt I've read. A few days after reading the book, I have a whole new grasp of how to get out of debt and stay out. Though I am not in serious debt, the whole money management advice is enlightening. This book should be required reading for all and should be given out in high schools.
"Life changing book!", This is an incredible, life changing book. I bought it in January, wanting to start off the new year right and it is great. I feel that this book plus Credit Card Debt by Alexander Daskaloff are a great pair of books for anyone in financial trouble thru credit card debt. The author is not judgmental but helpful in every aspect of this issue.

"Get Out of the Red and Into the Black", Plain and simple, How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt & Live Prosperously is one of the best contributions to the personal finance realm. Why do I say that? Because, in no uncertain terms, it addresses circumstances that most people in our society find themselves - deep in debt, digging deeper, and dealing, in silent desperation, with the repercussions.
In an era where consumers often finance their lifestyles with credit cards, use their homes like ATM machines, and, ultimately, make consumer credit counseling a booming business, Jerrold Mundis explains how our emotions and habitual thinking have put, and kept, many of us on the path to financial ruin.
The genius of this book, however, is its backbone: the principles of Debtors Anonymous. Though we may hate to think of it, habits of a lifetime do take work to change, ignoring Madison Avenue does take emotional strength, and dealing with the issues debt often engenders can be really tough. But, this book offers hope, and support, to those who heed its message.
Bottom line: no matter where how deep in debt you are, there is a way out if you keep your head and keep moving forward. And, Mundis can help you do that, if you follow his three cardinal rules: 1) Refuse to go into more debt one day at a time, 2) Keep a spending record scrupulously, and 3) Adhere closely to your spending plan.
All in all, How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt & live Prosperously can be one of the best additions to your financial library, whether you are in drowning in debt or not.
"Only for people in serious debt with no knowledge of finances", For my situation, this book was too rudimentary. I was looking for something that would give me startegies on how to payoff debt quicker. This book is not really about ways to payoff debt. It is more about learning how to spend less and seemed to be more of an advertisement for Debtors Anonymous. Things like "Try to go one day without using your credit card"... not for me. If you're in really bad shape and spend and spend without any way to stop then seek professional help, don't rely on this book. If you're like me and just looking for ways to reduce your outstanding debt quicker, look elsewhere, this is not the book for you.
"I was drowning...", ...in debt until I read this book and stuck in a cycle of self-sabotage week after week year after year for a very long time. I must say it has not been easy but it has been worth following Mr. Mundis' advice. After my separation from my husband in 2004, things have gone from bad to worse and I could not for the life of me figure out how to fix the mess I had made for myself, everything I tried just got me deeper and deeper into soul crushing debt. My divorce was final in July 2005 and things went from bad to worse- I made very very foolish decisions trying to fill the void left in my heart and trying to move forward like everything was A-OK. It was not. I actually found this book by just browsing for different books related to debt and this book stood out for some reason.
I am so glad I purchased it! Mundis gets to the heart of the matter and gets into the why's and how's of how people in debt get there in the first place. His step by step instructions and affirmations really helped me slowly change my way of thinking about money and I am well on my way to being debt free. I highly recommend this book to all who are truly tired of the cycle of debt.
"Worthless", If you want to get out of debt and make a million bucks, write a book on how to get out of debt and make a million books. This stinks. Dave Ramsey is the only way to go folks.
"Buy the book", Buy the book...
If you wonder why you aren't getting ahead financially? No savings etc. A week after you get paid, you wonder where all money went. If you feel overwhelmed and stressed about money
What Jerrod Mundis does is change the way how you see money. He points out the wastefulness of some money decisions. He offers solutions and peace of mind.
