Others say...
"Delightful exposure to conversational German" I purchased this book as a refresher course in German, and have found it both useful and charming. The organization of the book is very logical, the artwork is charming, and all in all, it is a bit like an actual visit to Germany. Well worth the money.
"An Excellent Book!!" The Dover books are some of the best to use when learning a new language. I bought the French version of this book a few years ago when brushing up on my high school French. So when the time came that I had finally decided to start learning the German language, this was the first book that I bought. I like the fact that this book is good for both beginners and intermediate learners. The book is a bit dated, but the basis of the book for teaching the language comes through. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is beginning the German language.
"Practice beats theory" I have spent 3 months studying this book and am now reading 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear but in the original German text. I of course need a dictionary to do so but that is all I need to enjoy the novel without any trouble. There is a Japanese maxim that says `practice beats theory' and this book is an excellent example of it, although as such one needs a little patience to finish it.
Patience in any case is what one needs to learn any foreign language and the numerous illustrations of the book are then one of its strengths to help one sustain the patience. A movie critic once said a good movie is one that does not age. I believe this applies to illustrations as well. In fact, those in this book do not appear old at all, despite the fact that they must predate the year of my birth of 1954. They are as expressive as they are alive.
The many photographs in this book on the other hand do look old, what they depict as well as themselves. One of them even fails to convey the depth, which however only contributes to the overall charm that they possess. Some of them even appear magical to me, for example the one entitled WO DIE ZEIT STILL STEHT or NATIONALTRACHT.
Pictures however are not the only strength of this book. It develops a consistent story around a pair of families, their introduction, their relation and their interaction, in a manner that encourages continuous reading. Furthermore, this basic thread is interspersed with numerous funny short stories and even poems. They serve their purpose very well; they do make one laugh and they do make one appreciate the language the book is teaching.
I read every single page of this book and did all the exercises. If you follow my example, you should be able to be reading normal German books in three months. This is such a fine book.
"I love the way this book is made." It's a simple, well thought out book that makes the reader learn through examples. The benefit is that it's not all memorization that you forget after 3 days of not studying it. Another good thing is that all parts of the lessons are separated in 3 : 1 line in german, 1 line in pseudo-english that makes you prononce the sentence in german and 1 line that is the translation.
Overall great book.
"Learning German" As others have noted, this book looks a little bit dated; the illustrations seem to have come from a by gone era. There have also been some changes in German society that are not reflected in the book, which would make the learner sound a bit old fashioned.
However, there are some very good examples of simple phrases and sentences, with explanations of structure and grammar. With the additional words, it would be possible to quickly put together some fairly good conversation pieces.
The guide to pronunciation is not always entirely clear; some others do a much better job. However, no book is going to prepare you for the reality of conversational German; but this will help get you started.
This is not really for someone that has more than a basic grasp of the language, although it might be useful to help brush up if you haven't used the language for many years. It would however, be good for someone starting to learn, particularly as part of a structured plan.

What our customer's say!
"it helps!", This book is really good. I had doubts obviously just like anyone would if you were to teach yourself a foreign language, but this book proved me wrong. It has excersises that i'm able to do correctly and it makes you think without being too difficult. I'm already addicted to this book because i'm learning fast but it does get a little more difficult later on which would be normal. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to start learning German.
"DEUTSCH", I just received Joseph Rosenberg's, "GERMAN: How To Speak and Write It." It is an informal conversational text of Self-Study.
The book's format is extremely well engineered, and cleverly formatted so that even someone of my age can make sense out of what is trying to be conveyed to the reader. Unlike other books, I don't know if, I will ever really "finish" this one because of it's specific purpose, that of... constant learning. However, I would higly recommend this book to anyone who even has an inkling of interest in learning a foreign language, specifically, German. This is a very good book for an excellant price!
The only thing missing in this book is it's ability in..."giving the reader Time to use it"!
"Beginners can't go wrong with this book.", This book was the fifth one I acquired in a previously unsuccessful attempt to learn German on my own. When it arrived from one of Amazon's "other" sellers, I thought, "Oh no." My copy was so old it had a "standard book number" and an old, creased cover. But it turned out to be exactly what I had needed to steadily begin learning to speak German, and to make my German-English dictionary and the three other books useful references! "German, How to Speak and Write It" provides, with its artwork and approach, the perfect jump-start to begin doing just what the title says. It cost less than any of my other German books, but it has been by far the most useful of all!
"Amazingly Informative!!", This is a wonderful book for beginners and more advanced speakers. Everything is clearly explained, and grammar is taught along with great examples. I also love the pictures. This book makes me want to sit down and take the time to do a lesson every day! I highly recommend it, and the price is unbeatable!
"Good Book", I read this book each day on the way to and from Language class on the subway in Germany. It was a great supliment and is organized in a way that made me look forward to doing the next lesson on the next trip. The material is a little dated, but I found that to be part of the appeal.

"Essential as your first choice of a primary text!", What a treasure! The book is inexpensive, and jam-packed with useful instruction in German. This book is a relaxed introduction to the German language, ideal for the beginner. It provides the novice with a basic grasp of the grammar and a foothold to devoloping the new vocabulary, as well as some interesting cultural insights. I have yet to see a textbook as thoroughly illustrated as this one. There are numerous quaint illustrations, photographic and drawn, that really make this book unique. The pictures seem to be mainly of 1930s to 1940s era, and some possibly from the 1950s. Its like a relic from a lost time!
"I teach German and use this book as the text", I have tried a number of introductory German texts for my Saturday morning German class and have never received a more positive reception from students. Yes, the illustrations are ludicrous and anachronistic to every extreme, but they somehow appeal to my class, providing diversion and comic relief. The copyright is 1962, and the illustrations are 1862, but the learning experience is timeless.
"Learning German", I am studying German as a mature adult student. I am finding Joseph Rosenberg's book invaluable. It is simple and easy to follow with what are now fun illustrations which remind one of yesteryear. I am finding that in class I am gaining much more confidence.
"Great book", This was a great book. It's a bit tough at the beginning, but all the concepts are introduced well. Since the book is so old, some of the words aren't used much anymore. I learned that the hard way...although it was funny! Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn some German.
"A Classic!", This book is immersing and tough. The first German sentences you're exposed to are not translated and complex. You won't get all the grammatical concepts till late in the book. The translations are in the back though. The teaching style is excellent. It is great supplement or book to expose you to German. It will take persistence to get though it. The illustrations from the 40s (I think) are great. The book is a great buy for the info it holds.
