"The Only Way to Learn" Over Memorial Day weekend of this year, I decided to learn to play bridge after never playing the game at all. I took several on-line lessons and other learning tools. The next week I bought Bridge for Dummies (BFD). I read the book cover to cover a couple times, highlighted appropriate passages and quickly learned the game.
Within a month I was playing online confidently based on what I learned in BFD. I had people comment that there was no way I was only playing for a month. After another couple weeks I played duplicate bridge at a local club and finished second my first time playing live.
I highly recommend this book to everyone wanting to learn to play bridge. If this book has one weakness, occasionally you will find instances where bidding strays from SAYC. But simply print out the 4 page SAYC brochure and tuck it in the book.
Bridge is by far the best game of any type I have ever played and this book gave me a foundation to grow from.
"Terrific Value" Bridge for Dummies, by Eddie Kantar, has turned out to be one of the best purchases I have ever made. I love bridge, and bought this book as just a refresher type thing. No way! The book is teeming with tips, strategies, and explanations that should be of great value to all but the most advanced players. I consider this to be the best book on bridge in the market today.
"excellent review of standard and newer principles" I was pleasantly surprised by the incorporation of all the latest bidding schemes in this Dummies book. I recommend it to all as a good review/reference source.
"Best Book" This is the best book I've found for those of us needing a refresher course in bridge. Much better, for me, than Goren. I would highly recommend this book for beginners.
"For Beginners and Others" It would have taken much more time for me to become a beginning bridge player without this book. Anyone who is trying to conquer the complexities of Bridge will find the book helpful.

What our customer's say!
"The Best!", Great book for beginners! It is clear, concise and full of humor, making it fun to read, as well as easy to comprehend. It is very well organized and progresses logically from the basics to all you need to know. The rules and conventions included are The Standard American System (new since the Goren days) and are consistent with American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) standards. In this system, distribution points are counted only after partners have agreed on a suit, which is fully explained in the book. I bought the first edition of Eddie Kantar's "Dummies" book when I retired 9 years ago and took up bridge again after a 25-year break, needing a refresher course and upgrade from the Goren years to modern bridge. As an intermediate player, I value it as a reference in case of forgetfulness... This 2nd edition has improved diagrams and other updated information. Highly recommended for beginners and beyond . . . Another excellent book by this author: "Eddie Kantar Teaches Topics in Declarer Play at Bridge."
"Best Book for Dummies I have Read!!!!", This is the best book for Dummies I have ever read. Kantar presents material in an order that makes sense. It is the first time I understood what I was doing in Bridge. As soon as I read some information on playing, I went to my software program, Bridge Baron (also excellent), and immediately played several hands by myself, making every contract with ideas Kantar had given me; even making contracts with what I used to think were awful hands. Kantar seems to be a born teacher. You can easily see that he loves his subject and very much enjoys imparting knowledge to others. This book is worth every penny! It is one of the best Christmas presents I received this year.
"Not for Novices", This book by E.Kantar is a mix of good and bad teaching and most novices would be better off with almost any other for beginners.
Kantar fails to stress that all 12 HCP hands with the same hand pattern are far from equal and thus do not qualify for an opening bid of one. A hand with four quacks(Q+J)is not equal to one with three Kings nor to one with three Aces even though each has a nominal 12 HCP count. Some, but not all, new books will tell students that an opening bid should also have two quick tricks, which are Aces, Kings and Queens in combinations.
Ch.Goren, the preeminent bridge teacher of old, urged students to count quick tricks as part of opening one bid requirements. There is no need nor a good reason to dumb down bridge teaching today.
Also, Kantar does not credit points for long nor short suits for opening bids,as is common in nearly all new books, so that 5,6,7,8 and 9 card suits are treated as equal and all requiring 12 or 11 HCP to open.
Such teaching is not helpful to novices and as a long time techer I would not use or recommend this book to novices, but more experinced players might find it worth reading.
Another shortcomming of this book is a lack of adjustments for unprotected honor cards. E.g. Axxxx,QJxx, QJ,QJ is not a 13 HCP count and should not be opened by a novice.
Another problem with the book is that all illustrations are ideal for the situation at hand, while most hands in real life are less perfect.
This second edition has only six more pages of instructions than the first and with just 372 pages of bridge, not 408 as claimed.Mr. Kantar is known as one of the best players in the country and the world. But lesser players have written far better books for novices.

"A Great Introduction to Modern Bridge! ", I am a big fan of the 1st edition of this book and was pleasantly surprised to find that the 2nd edition is a marked improvement. The new hand diagrams are a big improvement. Mr. Kantar has done quite a bit of rewriting of the material and the 2nd edition seems more tightly organized than the 1st edition. The new "cheat sheet" is an improvement as well. The strengths of the 1st edition -- the author's engaging style and humor, the clear presentation of bridge basics, and the steady, logical progression of material -- all remain intact.
"Bridge for Dummies - not so good", This book is not bad, but unfortunately is not clear, and not fun to read. It goes in to details too quickly.
It appears to be aimed at a person becoming an Intermediate Player

Read this reviews before You buy..."Clear & methodic approach", This is my second book on bridge. I started with "It's Bridge Baby" which I would recommend to a complete novice to the game and/or card playing in general. Bridge for Dummies is not the comprehensive authority on bridge but it is a solid foundation and intermediate step to solid play based on good fundamentals. I highly recommend it. "Excellent Book For Novices", This book contains bidding, play of the hand, and defense. Kantar is a clear writer. The type setting for the hands has been improved in this new 2006 edition. It's a much better book than the Idiot's Guide to Bridge. An absolute beginner would probably need help from another player or teacher to get through this book. The trouble with most begining bridge books is that they only have bidding. The play section is first and the book keeps it simple and clear. I like that the No Trump section uses 15-17 HCP and Jacoby Transfers. "Bridge", Great book for novices and beginners. Very easy to understand and use as a reference. "Hard to go wrong with this one ", BRIDGE FOR DUMMIES is a good and generous book and I have no trouble saying it excels over most similar beginners' books. Why? It's CONCISE. Kantar, a world-class authority and bridge player, takes the reader who doesn't even know that Aces top Kings and introduces the fundamentals of play. IMHO I don't think he goes too fast for the beginner, but the book is . . . EFFICIENT. Kantar teaches the elements of play before the elements of bidding. He does this by teaching play at notrump (so the tactical elements of a trump suit are not at issue) and generally assumes a 3NT (notrump) contact, which is worth game. And it works quite well; play at bridge is difficult but probably less difficult than bridge bidding. Later on, we can take the strategic and tactical material we use at notrump and apply them to contracts at one of the four suits (Kantar defines trumps as "wild cards," perhaps not strictly according to Hoyle but helpful nonetheless.) COMPREHENSIVE. Kantar goes all the way through trump suits, booking slams (contracts to take all, or all but one, of the card tricks), and other recognizable situations. He has an amiable, at times amusing way of introducing tips and necessary bridge terminology. He's also . . . MODERN. He assumes the use of 5-card majors and will allow an opening with eleven high-card points (HCP to initiates) in a hand at any position if the bid suit is good enough. Weak two-bids, too, of course. I'm not crazy about advocating the 11 HCP opener in all positions but this is a very small wrinkle in this engaging and useful book. Notes on production: It is certainly true that the text of BRIDGE FOR DUMMIES is only in black-and-white and does not show red for the red suits of diamonds and hearts, but then neither does the daily bridge column in the newspaper. The FOR DUMMIES series needs to keep costs down, after all. At the time of this writing (July 2008), Amazon has BRIDGE FOR DUMMIES at an attractive discount, so this is a great way to get more book for your buck. "Ditto: Great approach to teaching a sophisticated game", I am also new to bridge, and have also tried several other books on the subject. The three that I tried previously started with covering hand evaluation and bidding. By the time I get to the sections on "Responding to Responses at No Trump", I was getting lost. Kanter's approach is just the opposite. He teaches the mechanics of playing the hand first, THEN teaches how to evaluate the hand and bid. This is a great approach because once you learn how the play should be done, you are in a much better position to understand WHY you should evaluate and bid the way a hand demands you should. I've only studied the first 65 pages or so, but can already see a dramatic improvement in my bidding and my play. I can't wait to continue to study this great book. Overall, a terrific approach to teaching this great game. I can't wait to read some of Kanter's other books as well. Addendum: I continue to read and carefully study the chapters on play which preceed the chapters on bidding. There is lots of great material here. Don't let the "For Dummies" title fool you. This is a great book by a great teacher. Addendum 2: Here I am 6 months after buying this book, and am I glad I did. I'm playing online regularly, and am gearing up for my first NABC in July! I'm still a novice, and there is a tremendous amount of learning and practice ahead, but this book has been a tremendous first step. I think that of all the beginner books that I've read on ANY subject, this has been the best in terms of preparing me for the next level.
