Others say...
"exactly what I needed" this book was exactly what I needed to begin web design!
"Excellent Primer" This book is a great starter if you want to learn how to design web pages. While it's not a step-by-step page building guide, it's an excellent source of ideas, theories and practical "how-tos" that will definitely get you going in the right direction. If you're interested in building your own site, you could also be interested in hosting your site after it's built. Check out the "Complete Guide to Web Hosting" on amazon. It's a complete kit with all software and instructions that will let you host your site on your own PC for free. I highly recommend both of these titles together.
"Web Design for Dummies Review" This book is a great overview of the Website Design business. There are so many different functions of the website design process, more than I imagined. This book will not tell you step by step how to design a website. It more gives you a direction on what you may want to choose to learn first. If you want to build a website start with learning about HTML,Adobe Photoshop, Java or Flash books. Still a great read for someone who is just starting. Good tips in the book on sizing and color regarding consistancy on how different browsers will show the website.
"Making the Music" Knowing all the notes doesn't make music, and knowing all the code doesn't make a web page.
This is a great book to get you going on serious web design.
In the beginning of the book Lisa Lopuck states: "I'm not talking about building personal sites with frilly fonts and loud background patterns. I'm talking about building enterprise-level Web sites for real-world clients"
You will find step-by-step instructions for: *Building Wire-frames *Setting up Testing *Dealing with Clients *Putting together a Proposal And just about anything else you might need for setting up a Web Design Business.
But what if you just want to put together a few sites to "Make Some Money on the Web"?
Well, this book might be for you too. For instance; customers will get frustrated and go away if the navagation doesn't work - and here you will find out how to get a few friends together to test your navagation.
There is a lot of information about the planning stages of a site. And there are a lot of good reasons why it is NOT a good idea to start with "One Page" and then watch Toppsie grow. So she shows you how to do it. Step-by-step.
Also note: This seems to be a new format for Dummies books. The pages are glossy and the images are very good.
Highly recomended for anyone who wants to build more than one or two sites.
"Not what I expected." This book was very informative, but not what I expected. It isn't for the regular person wanting to learn how to design their own website, it is for professionals wanting to get into the business of designing web sites.

What our customer's say!
"Good, but outdated", This book is pretty good for someone who wants to learn the basics of the process of web design as well as plenty of useful tidbits of information.
However, the main problem is that this book is in sore need of an updating. For example, the author uses Internet Explorer for Mac which was discontinued over five years ago. Or there are references to Macromedia software programs (which are currently owned by Adobe) and so there will be some differences in current versions. Also, in this day and age when open source software like Inkscape and the GIMP are options, they should at least have some mention. The status of current Mac OS X-available software, as well as other modern tools and software programs for that matter, are also outdated. Other basic info, such as the support level for PNG, the existence of SVG, common screen sizes, current Mac screen resolutions, new HTML technologies, current printer prices and features, etc., are outdated, so take everything with a grain of salt, and make sure that you already have some basic knowledge of modern technology.
Nevertheless, although I have bought several Dummies books relating to building websites, this is my favorite. It's fun to read, very understandable, and is IMO indispensable for someone who wants to design a really good website.
For coding, though, there is only limited information. The W3Schools website or special books for HTML/CSS/PHP/Java are needed for that.
And a note to the author: "Lorem ipsum" is not Greek. It is written in a non-classical form of Latin used for what is called "Greeking". Let's hope for a 3rd Edition, huh?
"Solid", This book is very solid. It does not emphasize HTML, etc., but is good for more general ideas about what makes sense for layout of pages, etc.
"Great, Until I Got Lost....", Let's face it, if you've chosen this book, you admit to having little to no knowledge about web design. In other words, you admit you are "dumb" when it comes to the topic, and hope that the author understands you need to start from point zero and go to one-million by the end of the book. This author did a pretty good job in the first half of the book. I actually started a little website on my computer and was learning the "html" language feeling good about my brain accepting the new in-load of material. Then suddenly, half-way through the book the "basics" seemed to turn into the "real" material as if the reader should know by now what "1 + 1" was and that now it was time to move to quadratic equations. I tried to read over and over what she was attempting to convey, and do what I was supposed to on my little website. Something about the type of software use and the multi-dimensions in cyberspace that I was to grasp didn't grasp me at all (or I didn't grasp it but it slipped out of my hands). If you don't get the concept on page 1, you should not proceed to page 2. So when I encountered this "block" I never got passed it. The book is still waiting for me to figure out the second half.....like I'll need a face-to-face class to get to that point, and the reason why I bought the book was to avoid an expensive class. I would re-name this book, "....for Intermediates" instead of "Dummies".
"Good Colorful Pages", This book was a good beginning to learning how to plan and implement a Web site. This book is absolutely not for individuals who are looking to get some design or development skills because it solely acts as a tool to help with Web site project management and implementation.
Because every site should undergo these steps, this is a great book for those who are just beginning to get into Web design and creation. For those pros who want to look back at maybe something that was missed, this book will not help out too much, but could give a refresher on what is a good practice.
I will say though, this book does gloss over many topics, so in order to get the best out of it, when it references a computer program or task that you might not understand, I would do a little more research before going farther into the book.
An example is that it references Microsoft Project several times. If you are new to project management and just want a site with some pictures on it, this is where it begins to get a little technical, but not too much that you aren't able to grasp the basic concepts of site design and implementation.
I like the fact that this book drills best practices and proves why they are called best practices for Web design. I would recommend it with very little reservation, but that's just me...
"AIN'T FOR NEWBIES!!", I've always resected the "Dummies" for their simplicity, however, this book is strictly for "near" or wannbe professionals! I do not reccommend this book for the people who want to build their own websites.

Read this reviews before You buy..."Web Design for Dummies a waste of time ", I ordered this book along with HTML for Dummies expecting to get started writing simple web pages. I was very disappointed with this book...It spent too much time promoting tools and services outside of the "Dummy" concept. It spent too much time offering you a class on how to become a Customer Requirements Gatherer instead of teaching you how to design a web page. "Too Many for Me", Most of the Dummies books I know of are pitched to the ordinary joe. I bought this book assuming that it would be too, so it would help me design my own web page. Not so. This is for people who want to make a career out of designing web pages. It assumes that you will be part of a team that includes marketing people, designers (in addition to you), media specialists, "HTML slingers," programmers, and a producer to pull the team together and bring the project in on time and on budget. Well, okay. If you are the person it's written for, I suspect that you would give it five stars, like the other reviewers. Even with the disconnect, I got so much out of parts of it that I'll give it four. I will bet, however, that if your ambitions are as modest as mine are, there are other, better books. "Great Book!", After reading this book, I was able to start my own Indiana web design business, Stormfront Productions. SFP has grown considerably over the last year, solely based on creating quality web sites (which was learned from this book). Many of the web design basics we practice are covered in this book. I recommend it to all of our clients looking to update their web site. "GREAT PURCHASE", THE BOOK IS TOP QUALITY THE SHIPPING WAS PROMPT. THANKS "a must read for any designer!", I feel that this text is a must buy for any web designer! Web Design for Dummies is written in such a way that it's so easy to follow. Beginners surely wouldn't be confused or lost with it. Everything is practically spoon fed to you which some may think is a bad idea, but I believe that that's the way to learn! With step by step instructions, help tips and warning tips in the margins, and countless screen caps showing you EXACTLY what you should be doing is an awesome guide to becoming a designer. I love how this text is also written from a business aspect for those of you wanting to be an actual designer. Not only does it give you steps and tips of how to become a freelance web-designer but it also touches on the subject of dealing with clients which is also very important. Not only does it teach you how to make a high-quality web-page but also educates you on how to keep your clients coming back for more! Another thing I liked about this package is the bonus CD rom which contained trials of Dreamweaver, Flash and Photoshop which will only add onto the creativity and flair of your webpage. This guide walks you through on a step-by-step walkthrough through the entire web design process - from the drawing board to the published final piece.
