"The most comprehensive on the market"
This Russian language dictionary by Kenneth Katzner is the best and most comprehensive one I have been able to find.I have purchased several others only to be dissapointed but not with this one.

"Best for American English"
This dictionary is the best for American students because it's based on American English. Other dictionaries are based on British English (which means that they include some words American students don't use, and leave out some idiomatic expressions that American students do use). What I really like about this dictionary is as follows:
1) It gives lots of good examples
2) It includes a number of phrases along with the entry word
3) All the words in the English-Russian section can be found in the Russian-English section, and vice versa
4) It has every word you'll need to learn in your first 5 or 6 years of Russian (it even has English words I didn't know).
Although it's paperbound, by the time the book wears out, the student of Russian is advanced enough for a good Russian-Russian dictionary.

"Choice for the price"
Great dictionary a lot of words and descriptions.
Weak side - an absence of transcriptions for English words.
Good choice to learn Russian for English speaking people but not vice versa.

"Great from a begineer's standpoint"
I am learning to speak Russian on my own and through the help of my wife. I have been looking for a dictionary that I can use to help my wife with her English, and me with my Russian, and this one is IT! I am suprised by the amount of words it contains and that everything is written in American English. It really helps me and my wife understand each other's languages so much better. I would recommend this book to anyone learning Russian as a must have and to anyone who speaks Russian and lives in the US!

"Best Existing Russian-American English resource"
I used mine so much, it's literally in 3 pieces now! Perfect for American students of Russian and Russians who want to learn American English. I couldn't give it 5 stars because there are some words (especially from a woman's health perspective) that simply need to be added if it is to be the ideal resource for a person living abroad. Granted, these words weren't found in any other English-Russian dictionary, either, but it would help to finally make a Russian-English dictionary that's contents are more focused on daily life and than on the Cold War...

"Very Solid Dictionary", The best Russian-English resource I have found outside of having an actual interpreter. The book is easy to navigate, does not dumb-down while providing adequate examples and phraseology to illustrate the usage of each term with a focus on high-use words. The Russian-English equivalent to the outstanding Kodansha Japanese-English Furigana dictionary.

"For Americans", Even though we say we speak english, typical "english" dictionaries use british definitions. If you're from America, you speak American english and this is the only book on the market that clearly uses American-to-Russian and vica-versa definitions for words as well as idioms and phrases. I lived in Russia for a few years and out of every book I studied out of, this was one of the most helpful ones.

"A must have!", This is a great - an indispensable - reference for anyone learning Russian and for advanced speakers too. Advanced speakers would have other reference books also, but I'm sure that this dictionary cannot be outgrown. The layout is excellent with declensions for adjectives, conjugation hints, and imperfective/perfective shown for verbs. A great help for serious students.

"Best Russian-English dictionary I have ever used", This is by far the best dictionary we have ever found. We have used at least a dozen different dictionaries. My wife teaches Russian langauage to American born children and a good dictionary is very important.

"THE standard in foreign language dictionaries", Ideal for translating everything from "The Tale of Igor's Campaign" to contemporary colloquial Russian.

Unlike other dictionaries, Katzner's identifies literary obsolete, colloquial, and even vulgar words thus sparing the student of potentially embarrassing moments. Knowing the difference between "kushats" and "zhrats" might make for a more pleasant dining experience or the Russian equivalent of "breast" and "bosom" a more accurate reading of Lermontov.

Katzner also lists separately the perfective verb in the Russian to English half, meaning if while reading a Russian text you stumble across an unfamiliar perfective verb you don't have to guess it's imperfective form to locate its meaning. Other dictionaries fail miserably on this point. He also identifies the required case of certain verbs.

As for binding issues, yes, your dictionary will eventually fall apart because you'll use it so much and in so many different places (classroom, cafe, office, home, etc..). I have plenty of other dictionaries all inferior and seldom used which remain in perfectly wonderful shape. :-)

"Still the leader among the dictionaries currently available on the market", This dictionary by Kenneth Katzner has become a classic. It contains two sections: the English-Russian part and Russian-English part, with each half being a cross-reference mirror of its the other. The organization of entries is intuitive and words are easy to find. When a word can have more than one contextual meaning, those are listed separately under the same entry and clearly labeled. E.g. under the entry "discharge" there are several subentries with different meanings of this word: 1. unload 2. release 3. dismiss from a job 4. pay off, as debt, etc, each with its own correct equivalent in Russian.

The binding quality of the paperback edition that I own has been very good. Other readers have remarked on the poor binding quality of the hardback version (which is somewhat surprising).

The strongest point of Katzner's dictionary is the quality of its content. The precision of translations, and the up-to-date choice of words, are unparalleled. In my ten years of using this book, I have been able to find only maybe two or three sloppily or incorrectly translated entries. None of the current Russian- or British-based dictionaries can rival this linguistic craftsmanship. If I wanted to go nit-picking, I could argue that the word "poganka" is really better translated as the "deadly amanita" rather than the "toadstool" (the translation offered by the dictionary), but such technicalities aside, I am yet to find a better and clearer compiled dictionary, particularly for American based speakers. The next edition is long overdue, but for now this book remains the leader in its class.

"A bi-lingual must", This book is excellent. Whether you are a student or teacher of Russian or English. An excellent source.

"Beginning student of Russian language user's comments", Very comprehensive vocabulary but very limited slang content. The dictionary provides many examples of how the words are used in different contexts. I used this dictionary in Russia to communicate with limited-English-speaking friends. Communication was not fluent but it was effective. This is my fifth copy of the dictionary. My Russian friends also enjoyed using this dictionary and I gave away the first four copies. One copy was given to a teacher of English (the lovely Elena Andreevna) for use at her School No. 2 in Shchuch'ye, Russia. She said it was the only dictionary of this type that she had based on American (not British) English.

"Very Good", I'm in the process of learning Russian so that I can share her native language with my Russian born girlfriend. As a language expert, she rated this dictionary as Very Good, though not excellent, as she found a few errors and identified some types of words the editors chose to leave out which she wished they'd included. I'm still looking to get my hands on the Penguin Russian Dictionary, as it's said to be the best, but at the going price, I'll have to wait.

"The best desk size dictionary", There are other longer and more learned reviews, but I will just save you some time and research. If you want something more then a pocket version, this is easily the best mid-size dictionary. It's clear to read and comprehensive. As many words in both Russian and English have multiple slightly different meanings, the plentiful phrase usage examples are especially useful.
