"Typical Wrox bilge"
Wrox books have become predictably bad and this one is no exception. It is filled with non-working, hard to follow examples and incomplete information. Unless you want everyone in your organization using Visual Studio to post their Word documents, this book is not for you. The section on creating webparts does not work and it contains DEAD LINKS to on-line sites. Ouch! Did anyone edit this thing?

Being written by multiple authors also does not help. The book lacks a continuous voice and each section is written with a different focus. The book should be retitled "Random, Incoherent Musing Over SharePoint" as that is what it is.

"Great resource for developers and architects!"
This book is a definite must have for SharePoint solution architects and developers. What makes this particular book stand out is the real world experience that you'll find documented from SharePoint MVP's. It's been one of the most useful books in my book shelf.

As a SharePoint consultant, it's very useful to know what methods leading SharePoint experts such as Andrew Connell and Jan Tielens are using to develop solid, and robust SharePoint solutions. This books helps a great deal with that!

"Solid..."
Some of the chapters in this book go into great depth with the presentation of truly new ideas (e.g. an excellent strategy on site publishing by Andrew Connell) while other chapters are closer to re-hashes of material you can find in how-to guides, with too much attention given to basics. I'd concede that it's hard to strike a balance (and that I greatly appreciated the 101 breakdown of CSS in the chapter on branding). All in all a solid effort and you can be sure that these folks know from personal experience of what they write.

"To be recommended"
Good book. Authors do know the subject by heart. The good aspect about the book is that each chapter is written by THE expert.

"We couldn't work without it"
We work in SharePoint Consulting. Many of the woes found by previous professionals are found in the book, it has allowed us to learn from their past experiences and to offer a MUCH BETTER response time to our clients when they hit a roadblock.

What our customer's say!

"A good second book, once you have the basics", I like this book a lot but it has some issues. Some reviewes have noted that it is penned by multiple authors and this causes it to be kind of choppy. I believe that is a valid criticism but we need to consider that this book is not supposed to be your first SharePoint book but would be a very good second one. This is for people who have learned about SharePoint, maybe done a test deployment and want to really get their hands dirty with multiple aspect of the SharePoint technologies. If you are looking for something for primary study, this book is not for you. If you truly have a good fundamental grasp of SharePoint administration and want to move on to work with branding or BI quickly, then this is your book.

"Nothing Beats the Real World", What a great book. It shows you how things are really done. Showing you examples from start to finish it is a great resources when planning or designing a sharepoint environment. What is best is that most chapters leave you with some many ideas not only from what is written but also what else the MVP's cover.

A Great Work!!

"not recommended..much better books are out there", This books lacks rhythm. Being written by multiple authors, its a bumpy ride from chapter to chapter. Most of the examples dont work.

"Great book.", Very good practical book on SharePoint. I own several different books on this topic and this one is GREAT!

"Examples are not working!", Can't someone edit this book before it's published? For example, chapter 9 workflow integrating with InfoPath is not working! There are missing information here and there and I wouldn't have known unless I look at the author website. But still, it doesn't work (your initiation form is missing).

"They have actually done it!", Many of the current SharePoint books are a rehash of the same technical "how tos" and walk throughs. This book tells it like it is, warts and all. The advice is from folks that have actually done the work. They have worked through the issues and found the work arounds. This is great advice and a good read. You get 16 separate voices, programmers, administrators, designers, pholosophers...they are all talented. Buy 2 copies, one will be on permanent loan to your coworkers.

"Great practical information.", I've been buying a lot of the new SharePoint 2007 books, but this one has been the first that I've really wanted to read through all the chapters on. Unlike other books that just cover concepts, this book tells you how to actually use a particular feature and does it from the perspective of people who've had to do it rather than just the Microsoft line on how it's supposed to work.

"Excellent Resource!", This book is an excellent resource! I highly recommend that if you are going to be working with SharePoint 2007 that you have a copy of this book on hand as a quick reference for those "how do I..." questions that arise. I also highly recommend reading the book cover-to-cover as this book is full of practical, useful information on working with SharePoint 2007!

"Great book with practical advice", As the title indicates, this book has a lot of great information that you can put to work as you deploy SharePoint 2007. I like the way each chapter represents a discrete topic so that you can pull the book out when you need to accomplish a specific task and easily find the guidance you need.

Unlike some other books, this one is not just filled with info you can find in the product documentation. The MVP's that wrote the book provide advice that appears to come from actually doing real implementations. My only nitpick is that I wish there was a full chapter dedicated to InfoPath and Forms Services, but there are other books for that topic.

Definitely worth the investment for SharePoint admins or anyone else that needs details and directions to accomplish specific functionality with SharePoint. Also a handy reference for SharePoint developers that don't have any experience with the newer features of 2007 (BDC, Excel Services, etc).

"Next best thing to having a Sharepoint MVP on the payroll", Just got my copy of "Real World Sharepoint 2007", and I'm really glad it's here. I've been tasked with converting an old Outlook application (written in VB6) to Sharepoint 2007 and was having a lot of trouble getting a grasp on the process of building a brand-new Sharepoint site. This book really helped bring things into focus.

I like the fact that this isn't a 7-pound doorstop book. Each chapter is to the point, and covers its topic with enough detail to keep me going. I'm getting my questions answered without spending hours searching the internet for bad or misleading information or having to wade though pages and pages of irrelevant fluff.

Normally I shy away from "ensemble" books with multiple authors. Too often the writing and coverage varies from chapter to chapter, and I come away feeling cheated on topics that weren't adequately covered. Fortunately, these guys avoided that trap. Each contributor took on a topic near and dear to him, and they've all done a great job of assembling an excellent Sharepoint reference. There are things in this book that I haven't seen anyplace else, and it's been a big help in my work.
