Others say...
"You will not regret this purchase" I cannot say enough good things about this book. After reading it, I feel confident about my ability to select, understand, and evaluate Mutual Funds -- and how to manage my portfolio and overall finances. The book not only gives you an in-depth yet simple description of different kinds of mutual funds, it also helps you understand what investments are suitable for your specific situation and how your portfolio should change over time.
This is a book that should become a part of high school curricula. The country would be better for it.
"excellent book for understanding mutual fund" I wish I had this book 10 years ago. It tells you how to find out the hidden cost of mutual funds, how to select funds, how to evaluate your funds...etc. Many useful and practical tips. Highly recommended.
"Great Book but beware of Bias" Eric Tyson does an excellent job providing the basics and then going into more detail about how to develop an appropriate portfolio. Beware however of the book's apparent bias towards Vanguard. I personally have a bias as well towards Vanguard but in some ways his criticisms of other brokerages are unfair and he pushes vanguard at times that seem inappropriate. Overall a fantastic book however.
"read this before you invest" I don't usually find the Dummies books that useful but this one is an exception. It turns out I have been basing my investments on all the wrong information. This book answers questions about expenses, capital gains, taxes, etc...It would be an excellent gift for someone just beginning to invest; I wish I had read it ten years ago.
"Too many irrelevant stuff, not much useful info" This book is disappointing. I've bought this one and "morningstar guide to mutual funds". This one has more pages than "morningstar guide", but has much less useful info. 1. It talks lengthily about personal finance, taxing form, fund transfer, etc, but not much clear description/insight about mutual fund itself. 2.The author seems to be vanguard fan, and pay little attention to other mutual fund companies.

What our customer's say!
"Making WISE Mutual Fund Investments", We all know every Mutual Fund associate thinks THEIR fund is the best on the market, hence the NEED for a non-partisan book that helps you understand WHAT to look for in a GOOD Mutual Fund. If that sounds like you, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is TRULY what it says it is...you may be a beginning investor when you begin the book, but you'll feel confident enough to make thorough investigations into prospective funds by the time you finish it! It is an 'easy read' book with easily understandable text.
"financial planning", Eric does a good job of a broad view of the particular subject matter at hand. My only issue is that the books are highly overlapping. A structure with the original book on personal finance with additional chapters on subtopics would likely have avoided all the duplication.
"mutual funds for dummies", the book is fundamental and was given to my grandchildren for a start in investing. i am helping generate a spread sheet for them to use as an analytical devise. better than average do it yourself book, gets down to the basics
"Great Book - not just for adults", This is a wonderful book for anyone wanting to know more about investing their money and managing finances. I believe it is a wonderful gift for teenagers and college students as most of us do not learn these things in grade school. It's an easy read and can be used as a reference when the young adult starts making their own income and has questions on what to do with it.
"Heavy bias but some good information", The book does contain some very good advice for how to select good mutual funds but the book basicly states that as an individual investor that it is nearly impossible for you to get better returns while investing in individual stocks. This is not the case IF your are willing to do the necessary research on a regular basis. Most non-index mutual funds fail to beat the market indexes consistently and he states that if the professionals can't do it then why could private investors beat the indexes. The simple fact is that if you are willing to do the homework consistently, maintain a diversified portfolio of 5-10 stocks then you can beat the market. The simple reason most non-index mutual funds can not beat the markets is because they simply have to much money to manage. A good managed mutual fund will have to at some point close its doors to investors to continue making great returns and because most of these funds make thier money from bringing in more funds which therefore creates a conflict of interest. This major point is only partially gone over in the book and it seems the writer has written off the entire population as people only willing to check thier investments everyonce in a while and will not perform the research. The author should at least say that beating the market with individual stocks is possible for the investor that is willing to perform the necessary work but for those who are not then with a fraction of the work you can still get good consistent returns through the use of mutual funds.

"Best book on mutual funds from beginner to advanced investing ", Mutual Funds for Dummies is " the" book to own if you could only choose one book on mutual funds. It is complete with information on stocks, bonds, and money market funds. This book goes beyond most other books in that it not only educates on investment decisions, it also provides information on tax considerations when taking distributions. The tax information alone is well worth the price of the book. This book gets my highest recommendation.
"Meaningful and illuminating View of mutual funds", Eric Tyson has written (well-written) a book that manages to blend just the right amount of detail with general material. As a novice in the arena of mutual funds, I can't imagine a better book to help you learn about mutual funds and how/what to invest.
There are many good things to say about this informative book, but I want to emphasize just 3: 1) Tyson has the uncanny and rare gift of presenting material that never condescends to the reader, but recognizes exactly how much knowledge a reader new to mutual funds can assimilate; 2) I appreciate his directness and honesty about specific mutual funds--he praises Vanguard throughout the book, while listing some other funds apposite for certain investing situations. 3)He genuinely cares about ordinary people gaining knowledge about how to invest and make wise decisions about money and investment (I highly recommend another of his Dummies books on investing.).
Highly recommended--even experienced mutual fund investors will learn a lot from this book.
"Great book does just what it says on the cover.", I orderd the book knowing nothing about investing except that I need to start.Once I started the book I could not stop till it was finished. Its a great learning tool!!
"A Primer On Mutual Funds", Lucid witing, good organization of material and entertaining to boot. For those of us who are intimidated by the jargon and have no idea what they are talking about on such TV programs such as "The Nightly Business News" this is a very good place to start.
"Not for dummies--for everybody", As beginners' books go, this is about as good as it gets. Most books assume you know stuff. This one starts from zero and takes you as far as you care to go.
I gave a copy to each of my daughters so they could learn about investing earlier and better than I did. It's very readable, very thorough.
Had I started with this book instead of randomly taking whatever my library had I believe my learning curve would have not stayed level near 0 for as long as it did. The title--for Dummies--put me off, and that was a mistake in judgement.
I think there's room for improvement, so only 4 stars, but you won't find much better.
