Others say...
"Photoshop CS3 Bible" The book touches on everything I need to know for working with Photoshop. The authors share tips, tricks, and workarounds. If something works well or does not do what the user would expect, the authors say so. The topics are covered throughout the book in a clear, thoughtful manner. Unlike some other books on Photoshop, and I have several, this one is definetely worth every penny.
"Best if you know PS already" I bought this book based on my memorable experience with the Filemaker Bible. I still have a nice warm fuzzy for that book. As a complete neophyte, I jumped into the FM book, and soon found myself creating some fairly complex and useful databases to manage client data for my business. Not exactly the same experience with the CS3 bible.
The best approach, for a newbie, would be to buy a different book with more step-by-step examples, and then reference this book, as needed. I'll definitely be keeping this book, and remain confident that it will rise to the occasion of answering nearly any future question I can concoct.
PROS
- The authors obviously know their stuff.
- The book has a kazillion pages, and it totally packed with information. For me, it will serve as a great reference guide for years to come.
- Seems to be indexed pretty well.
- I like that it comes with a hands-on CD, but frankly, I have not used it yet.
- I have to hand it to the authors, for tackling such a difficult subject to write about.
CONS
- Organization. As you read a chapter, it touches on a subject and then sometimes again on the same subject later. It can be hard to correlate how this fits into the big picture. I found myself turning to the table of contents to figure out what the current paragraph was addressing. The sub-headings in the chapter are not always helpful, and sometimes I found myself having to read a paragraph or two to find out what was being discussed. Paragraphs do not often start with a a transitional sentence, forcing the reader to follow the course of discussion.
- I'm not a big fan of the authors' writing style. In order to comprehend many sentences, I had to read them 2-3x. Often, it can be like reading a patent or a college math textbook. You can't really spring from sentence to sentence. Time consuming to digest. Admittedly, it's difficult subject matter to write about.
- The book is in serious need of more diagrams, indexed by arrows and labels. With much discussion of menus and sub-menus (admittedly necessary, due to the subject matter), it is easy to get lost. What menu are we discussing, and how to I reach this function again? I annotated some diagrams on my own, for example, to label which menu was which. Otherwise, all the menu discussion can get pretty dry, while at the same time disorienting-- a bad combination.
- The book would benefit with some step-by-step examples. Perhaps, addressing some common tasks in PS and how you perform them. Honestly, though, that might not be the proper the role of this reference tome, although some more examples would go a long way.
- The early chapters go into great detail about setting preferences. If you've been using PS for years, this is probably important right off the bat - making the program comfortable to use. But for me, there was much more important subject matter to discuss up front. Perhaps an overview of the some different components, such as color, selections, layers, masks, etc.
- Some foundation concepts (like file format, color, compression, and resolution) appear scattered throughout different chapters, making it hard to assimilate the material quickly. Some of this material is repeated, nearly verbatim, in different places.
- Tiny font. I guess this was a necessary evil, to avoid dividing the book into multiple volumes. But again, it's like reading a patent.
"VERY USEFUL MANUAL FOR PHOTOSHOP CS3" I AM A PHOTOGRAPHER, SO I NEED A MANUAL THAT GOES INTO DETAIL, BUT IS CLEARLY WRITTEN; IF YOU ARE NEUBIE OR EXPERIENCED I RECOMMEND THIS TEXT.
"Superlative" One of the best birthday gifts I ever bought myself. As an amateur I have found this edition most helpful, the authors have gotten it right, with clear, concise, and easy to follow direction. You could use the program (Photoshop) right out of the box but without this book you would never realize the full potential. No doubt, a boon for all Photoshop users.
"Photoshop CS3 Bible extremely helpful and informative" I found the Photoshop CS3 Bible to be both enjoyable to read and really informative. It has helped me improve my photos, and I've learned a lot about features I'd never used before and I've found better ways to use the tools I thought I understood! Photoshop's such a big program, you can never know everything, but this book has gotten me closer to that goal than any other book I've read or seen. The tutorials on CD are a great addition to the book, for people like me who need to see something done in addition to reading about a procedure. Unlike the other reviewer, I prefer the lack of a voiceover in the tutorials - any instructions someone might say out loud appear onscreen, so you can follow the tutorials anywhere, anytime - and not need sound to use them - and we're spared any jokes or unnecessary comments that most voiced tutorials seem to include. I'm using the sample images (and there are plenty of them) from the CD for practice, and they're really helpful. All in all, it's a great book, and I highly recommend it!

What our customer's say!
"A Wonderful Resource!", This book was a requirement for one of my college classes, in which most of my class books are sold to make up for what I spent. But this book is definitely one I will keep!
If you want to know how to do something in Photoshop you'll find it in here. You'll find everyting in here from using Photoshop's tools (masks, filters, etc.), what file types are best suited for your project, what's the difference between raster and vector graphics and sooo much more!
I've only been able to read two or three chapters in full so far (don't say anything to my teacher! It's nearly halfway through the semester!!), but I've used this book a number of times to look up shortcuts and how to do other techniques that we haven't covered in class yet! Sometimes it takes a while to find the material among the hundreds of pages in this book (the book's thickness is listed as 2.3" on Amazon!) So this is NOT meant to be a pocket reference kind of book! But it is a wonderful book for at home reference!
"Big Book", There is alot of information in this book. You really need to spend alot of time trying to take it all in. I felt like I needed a teacher to help walk me through all of the pages. I am excited to master this program
"Another must have for graphic designers", I needed another refernce book! I don't like to ask for help because I don't learn that way... I would rather try to slove my Photoshop problems myself. This book ROCKS!! It's great for photographers and graphic designers.
"Excellent resource", As always the "Bibles" are excellent resource material. I do however miss some more in depth "How to's" like there used to be (Photoshop 5 bible had excellent step by step additional material on the cd).
"Excellent Reference guide", I have been a photoshop user for a couple of years, but tend to only edit the obvious such as exposure, color balance, maybe the contrast and/or sharpness and then I'm done. It wasn't until recently that I have been using various layers to enhance my images and im finding that I still lack confidence with the abundance of tools and options CS3 has to offer. I relate these inadequacies to sporadic practice. Like anything, practice makes perfect, and if you don't use it... you loose it. Since photoshop isn't my full time job, I find that I forget minor details more often than not. This is where "The Photoshop Bible," comes in as an amazing resource. First of all the table of contents is written very well. Being able to look up a specific tool or scenario, fast (portraiture, architecture) is vital to a 500 page book of information. This book is relatively new to me and I have already used it several times as reference and im happy I did. Each time I have used the book, I start by scanning the index, after finding the page and reading into it I always find additional information that helps me perform the task more effectively. I also find that his dialogue makes for an easy read that's comprehendible the first time read.
I would recommend this book to anyone serious about photoshop, who doesn't have the time to continually practice and learn the new tricks because this author makes it easy! It's easy to find what your looking for and it's easy to read, understand and perform what the author says!

"New to Photoshop", This book has helped me master some techniques I previously had difficulty with. The "tip" section clarifies some of the technical jargon for me. Thanks for addressing Mac users needs also.
"Learn a lot on the Pot", I am a busy man, so I try to multitask a great deal. I don't think I have ever become quite as knowledgeable about any subject while sitting on the toilet as I have with Photoshop CS3 Bible. And I did not get hemorrhoids from spending inordinate amounts of time on the throne reading because I could always find and absorb the information I sought with amazing ease thanks to the logical organization, lack of confusing technical jargon, and useful pictures. Overall, it is a phenomemal self-education tool. I am now able to doctor up super-convincing pictures that have all my friends believing my stories about big-game hunting in the Swiss Alps and shooting a unicorn, wrestling a gorilla in downtown Milwaukee, and using a rocket launcher to rob a 7-11 with the help of Kevin Spacey, George Carlin, and Samuel L. Jackson. Thanks for changing my life.
"Unleash the power of CS3!", I have been using Photoshop in my work for years, and recently acquired the new CS3 software. Photoshop CS3 Bible is a logical and concise reference. The beauty of this book is that it walks you through the many features of CS3, unlocking all of the power for which you have paid! Although this is a technical book, it is fun and easy to read. The book has added to my use of Photoshop in that I have found many more creative avenues with less experimentation. The authors have saved me time and frustration in my transition to CS3. Many thanks for a well written book! This may be the best CS3 plug-in you can buy. It wakes up your creativity!
"A beginner's Bible", This one really is the Bible. As a beginner trying to teach myself Photoshop, I find it indispensable. The authors have a refreshingly direct, accessible, easy to understand style -- A permanent volume on my shelf.
"Great reference book", My 3 star rate for this book is an average of the 4 points I found interesting. I will write a brief explanation of each of the 4 points and will mark the number of stars I think each point deserves.
Content: 5 stars This is probably the best reference book about P CS3 on the market today. However, anyone who buys this book must have this in mind: This is a reference book, it's not a handbook, manual, nor a tutorial. Therefore you won't find many step by step examples. What you will find is a very comprehensive, easy to read (for begginers and experts), explanantion of every single menu, tool and variantion of tools that phosohop has. Probably you won't need to read the entire book or will need all the topics at once, but you will need the book from time to time to review whatever is importat for you at that particular moment. It's amazing how deep it goes around every single topic, nothing is left behind. The book has 1,164 pages, has 20 chapters plus appendixes. The book is divided in six parts: I) welcome to photoshop; II)Painting and retouching; III) Selection, masks and filters; IV) Layers, Objects and text; V) Color and output; VI) Appendixes Size: 4 stars It's huge, however not heavy, probably less than a pound. Nothing you wouldn't expect for a book like this. The buyer will read it better if the book is over a table not when he is in his bed. Presentation: 0 stars One of the thing that impressed me the most (and I mean negatively) was the poor quality of the paper and the pictures. Yes I know this is a paperback copy, but I was never expecting that this book was going to have black and white photographs, I mean all of them but those in 16 pages. There are some chapters in which the book explains about color managment and it tells things like this (page 955) "camera Raw's Temperature slider takes an image (left) andts you to warm up (right) or cool down (bottom)", presenting 3 small (1 inch by 1.5 inchs, actual size) pictures in white and black that suposedly reflects the explanation about color temperature. Theres's no way you can tell the difference between the color temperature. Exaples like this are many. CD: 2 stars In the Cd you can find some pictures and some viodeo tutorials (11). The CD has some of the pictures that you can see in the book but they are not many and by all means you need more (remember the book has black and white pictures). The video tutorials are very good but impressively, you won't hear a voice explaining the video. I don't know if I am wrong but I was expecting to hear a voice explaining the video, instead of that there are only some text lines that appear from time to time explaining it.
Conclusion: This is an excellent reference book and a must have if you work with photoshop. However if you want to learn more you probably will need to buy a manual or tutorial type book.
