"Dust off that camcorder dude!" Fun and easy reading book about a young man making a movie on the cheap just so he can get his first ten bad movies out of the way before making a good one. Fancy this first effort to hit it big in Hollywood! Inspiring stuff, and especially inspiring considering he never expected this el-cheapo B-rate Spanish language movie, made with volunteer actors in a border town, to amount to anything but a practice run for the Mexican video market if he was lucky. Get it, read it, write down that script you have in your head and go dust off the old camcorder and start shooting!
This book also has lots of cool hints as to how to make expensive looking scenes!
"Cracks along at a pace." Well written, full of fun and wit and most importantly a damn fine blueprint to gain inspiration from should you wish to go out and make your own movies. Best non-fictional book I've read on the making of films in a long while. Up there with Roger Corman's 'How I Made One Hundred Movies In Hollywood And Never Lost A Dime.'
"Without a Crew?" This book is mostly a tale about making a particular film. It is entertaining but it lacked the nitty gritty details I was hoping for.
"great book" Great book, a must for those interested in filmmaking . a perfect example of how an outsider can make it in hollywood
"Very interesting" I'm still reading, over half way done, but so I far I love it. Very interesting.

What our customer's say!
"Inspiration for film makers", As has been mentioned, this is a memoir about how Robert Rodriguez made his film "El Mariachi". I just finished it and was thoroughly fascinated by it. This is not a technical manual (although there is plenty of technical knowledge and "pearls of wisdom" to be gleaned from it) so much as it is a motivational book. It is also a book about seeing a project through to its completion, regardless of the obstacles that may come up. It is written in a day to day format and tells how he came up with the concept, the unusual methods of funding that he came up with to make the film, the obstacles that he had to overcome, and how he pulled off a feature length film for $7000 that was eventually bought by a major Hollywood studio.
If you are tired of technical books, I highly recommend Rebel Without a Crew. But first, I recommend renting "El Mariachi" and watching it. Its a good action movie, better than some of his later films such as "Desperado" and "From Dusk Till Dawn". As Rodriguez discusses some of the shots, you will be able to visualize these scenes and see why he had to film them the way he did. I found it to be an entertaining and educational read.
As I mentioned, this is not a technical manual. It is not written in a "how to" format, so to speak. But he does go into detail about how and why he shot many scenes the way he did, how he came up with props and locations, how he cast roles, paced the movie, and how he sold it. I believe that any aspiring indie filmmaker will find ideas that he can apply to his own film making.
"Excelent", This book is amazing. If you are interested in starting a career in film making, this book will give you all the confidence youll need to do so.
"An Entertaining Look at a *LOW* Budget Film Production", Robert Rodriguez's "Rebel without a Crew" is an often amusing and highly entertaining look at how the author shot the indie sensation "El Mariachi" for a reported $7000 (some $3000 of which he earned by selling blood and taking part in medical experiments).
The writing is diary like and flows nicely from beginning to the end. Rodriquez gives very interesting insight on how he tackled huge problems and came up with inexpensive solutions to mimic big budget movie look and feel.
Definitely not a step by step guide on making and editing your own movies, this book is actually more of guide to a mind-set or philosophy on getting out and actually pursuing a dream.
"The Ten-Minute Film School" included as Appendix 1 is a great addition and is worth reading by itself.
Recommended!
"intresting", i have been in the motion picture world for a very long time, i also know alot about low budget filmmaking and i love the way how he got into the industry, i think he tells his story in a very intresting way but i do not like the fact how he makes it seems like film school is completly useless, i understand where he was coming from but do not diss film school as if you cannot learn anything from it, i myself did not attend film school but for 15 years of my life i read about cinema. i must have read so many books on film directing and it did help me out alot, i think he also forgot that he went to film school himself, he had to know the rules in order to break them properly. this book had me laughing alot, robert has a great sense of humor and his ten min film school can be very useful to alot of us independant filmmakers, he's right film school does show you how to work on a huge set that cost alot of money but thats because they hope one day you make it big, they show you how to work as a team with other crew members just like robert is doing now. i've seen him on several film sets and his crew consists of more then 75 people, way more then he worked with the first time, so when reading this book don't take things literally.
"Teriffic!", Loved this book. Funny and insightful look at breaking into Hollywood. Read it & watch El Mariachi.

"Rodriguez: The New Filmmaking Guru", Rebel Without a Crew is, in my opinion, the most important and inspiring book about filmmaking you can read. Yet the book is not just for filmmakers, there is a huge business aspect within the book that has gone unseen by most people. While making his film El Mariachi, Rodriguez realized that he could get people to work for free. All he needed to do was ask them for a favor. The whole book is basically about getting people to VOLUNTEER their time.
Rodriguez states that if you can get a group of people together who want to help you, you can accomplish your dreams. This sort of strategy can work whether you're a filmmaker or a business man participating in a completely different field of work.
Being a filmmaker, I found this book to be truly inspiring. For over five years, I have been making films in the guerilla style that Rodriguez made his but not until reading this book did I ever think that this kind of shooting would work for a feature film. Rodriguez has truly made me believe that anything is possible.
"Excellent for dissecting "how to" of a low budget feature.", Great companion to the El Mariachi dvd (the one with Robert's 10 minute film school)...One of the most informative director commentaries of any film. The book is an extension of the commentary and "10 minute film school."
"Fantastic Story, But Dont Try This At Home", If you have not heard this story, prepare yourself for a real life tale more unbelievable than anything you`d see in Sin City. Robert Rodriguez exploded onto the scene in the early 90s with El Mariachi, a super guerrilla film that he paid for in part by checking himself into a facility to be used as a guinea pig for experimental medicines. No matter what Rodriquez goes on to accomplish in film, his legacy first will be El Mariachi, a film that expanded the limits of filmmaking and inspired a generation of kids to run up credit card debt and make horrible movies (sorry, but I don't blame Robert for the sins of his followers).
In "Rebel Without a Crew", he gives a stunningly thorough summary of his life before, during and after making the film. The most fascinating aspects of the book are the Entourage-like behind the scenes stories about studio negotiations, trying to get into film festivals, etc. Rodriquez almost overnight fame seems more when you hear him describe how little he had going for him financially when he was negotiating deals that would guarantee him millions of dollars of creative control for the rest of his artistic life.
Like I mentioned above, many people have heard this story, thought what he did sounded easy and tried to follow his path. Nearly all failed. Hidden within his story is the mind of a creative genius with an encyclopedic knowledge of film techniques. What people fail to understand is that Robert Rodriquez would have been discovered eventually. How he got there is not as important as who he was. If you want to be like him, study the history and craft of filmmaking before mortgaging your future (and possibly health) to try to replicate his life.
"Inspirational story", Recounts the making of "El Mariachi". Interesting story told through a Journal. If you want to make films but just can't get started, read this book. It gives you the motivation to do it with whatever equipent you have. Likeable guy, good book!
"Great Read", I have to admit I just got this book a couple of days ago and have not finished. What I have read though is great. His book in not just a how to book. Its entertaining and very inspiring. I really enjoyed reading about Rodriguiz spend 30 days as a medical experiement to make $3000 to help pay for his movie.
