Others say..."SO GOOD, IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL!!!"IMPRESS YOUR FRIENDS. INTIMIDATE YOUR ENEMIES. BUY THIS BOOK!!! I must echo the sentiments of an earlier reviewer. I was a returning college student in my late twenties. I had to take several remedial courses just to bring myself up to speed in math and English. Between the techniques in this book (mainly Mind Mapping), meditation and subliminal memory tapes (the last two are not in this book) I finished my second semester with three A's and two B's. Also, I made the Deans list. The section on speed-reading was so great; College was the first time in my entire life that I could read so fast I actually had time to go over my answers and check for any possible errors. I rarely found any. If you are in a SUPER HURRY to improve your memory for testing, I suggest skipping to the Mind Map section. However, you really should go back when you have more time and read the WHOLE BOOK!!! "Sime to read. Useful techniques to help you study better ..."I bought this book at a local discount book store. The title and the colorful front-cover seemed interesting, so I spent the amount. The book is very easy to read. It also has a good set of useful techniques that most people can use when they are studying (or maybe even when they are thinking). I am still practicing these techniques and cannot say for sure whether they work (especially the mind-mapping technique). But, overall, I think, every student should learn the techniques from this book before jumping headlong into studying subjects like Physics/Chem/Bio/Math/etc. Good book! Read it and practice the techniques. "Good update on mind maps."In this book i found good updates on mind mapping as well as some other techniques. "Best 1 hour investment ever!"This book can have a dramatic improvement in your personal productivity in just an hour! The advantage of the mind map is: ---You can store large amounts of information in a small amount of space. ---You can learn the technique in minutes! ---You can retrieve information quicker and easier than in linear form (note cards). I have found it very useful for making notes, brainstorming and as a reference during training classes. I do not recommend reading the book!!! - Instead go right to the mindmap. Why not learn to mindmap with a mindmap!!!
"Simple yet profound techniques to help you learn" This book outlines series of very simple yet effective means to learn and retain information. None of the concepts are particularly earth shattering but they are presented in such a way as to make you say Ah ha! Of course, why didn't I think of that? Buzan includes points on how to help you read faster, how to use mnemonics to remember simple to complex information and he explains mind maps and their role in learning. He points outs the flaws in traditional learning styles and note taking and encourages you to evaluate your learning style to best utilize the time and resources available. This book is great for students and professionals alike and I found it especially useful while studying for my MBA classes.

What our customer's say!
"Intro Only", This is a good book to introduce you to how your brain works but it doesn't go into great depth. If this is your first read on the subject then I highly recommend it.
"Easy-to-learn concepts, Great book", I found Tony Buzan's book to be priceless. I first started using mind mapping during my sophomore year of college - I am now graduating. I found that studying and remembering what I studied were much easier, and being able to see how everything was interrelated and connected made college much easier.
I even used mind maps for writing essays and large term papers. I found that this made for a good outline. It really helps in writing to organize your thoughts and know where to go.
I am going to give his "Mind Maps at Work" a try and see how well it can be used for everyday on the job situations. I would recommend this book to anyone, it is easy to learn and can be mastered with a minimal amount of effort. I would also recommend adding A LOT of color to your mind maps.
"Wish I Had This Book as a Kid", This book is fantastic. I have started to use it with my children to help them be more successful in school. The concepts on learning are unbelievable - where was this stuff when I was growing up? Well worth the cost from the information you gain on how to learn more efficiently. Can't wait to buy his book on memory.
"This book helped me pass a very tough exam", In the State of Texas, there is a comprehensive exam to become a certified school teacher. It's in two parts, given at different times of the semester.
Thanks to Buzan's ideas, I managed to pass both parts of the exam the first time. I used mind maps, memorization techniques he presented and in general, studied extensively. To be sure, I modified his techniques to fit my own style, but it worked. Mind mapping and mnemonics make good partners!
As with many other study techniques, it is still a lot of work and requires effort, and sometimes you'll have to make time to study when you'd rather do something else. In other words, you'll still need self discipline. But in my opininon, it makes the time studying a lot more fun.
Your mind maps don't have to be great works of art -- and they can be revised -- in fact, the process will help you remember better.
It's possible to do well and pass -- even ace -- tests without these techniques. But if you want something that will make the process more fun and probably more efficient, then this is the book for you.
"Misinform your mind", Tony Buzan is not an expert in brain science, nor is he an originator. This is evident in the "facts" he gives to explain how the brain/mind works. The info given is old pseudoscience about the mind, adapted from the extreme views of Sperry, amongst other speculative writers of the 1970s. But I know why Tony Buzan hasn't updated the information to include all the studies that show; mind mapping does not work to any significant level, it is not adopted to any significant level by students, it does not balance the brain any more than other types of note making, and it certainly does not make you smarter.
The reason for this persistent adherence to old and debunked pseudoscience, is that it sells books. Some common mind myths include; You use less than 1% of your brain, the brain is seperated into specific left/right skills, creativity can be increased easily using simple techniques, and just imagining something will bring it to pass in reality. These have all been debunked in the latter part of the 1970s.
The techniques given in the book are extremely limited in comparison with the strategies given in other less glitzy study method/ learning books. That is good enough reason not to buy the book. But the principles given that dictate the use of techniques are so nonsensical compared to more recent science, that they can only be thought of as sales pitch, or an effort to sell other books by the same author.
Mind mapping is a very feable technique compared to other graphic organizers (eg the concept map). Speed reading is so misleading that it tends to result in very successful deception litigation. They have both been debunked on several occasions.
Find a study method book that doesn't just stroke the ego. Probably any book on study techniques will give better methods without setting you up for anticlimax.

Read this reviews before You buy..."Terrific for students", Pursuing a college degree in my late 30s, I found this book to be superb in every way. It reveals how little almost all students know of how to study and reach their academic potential. Have never been disappointed with any of Buzan's books. "A Good General Overview", Tony Buzan's Use Both Sides of Your Brain is of the short and sweet variety. Good points are made about mind mapping and about building memory skills. Its sad that the memory principles are not emphasized enough in schools and the author capitalizes on that point. However some of the problems associated with reading comprehension are not developed enough here. The author should have clearly defined about backskipping and rapid eye movement as associated to performing well on tests. Furthermore, the author should further document how people with learning disabilites can overcome their problems by utilizing reading techniques. Maybe it will show up in a later edition. The good does outweigh the drawbacks. Lets hope Tony Buzan can refine his craft as this is a subjeuct that can use further attention.
"A review from only one side of the brain", There aren't many better introductions to the broad goal of bringing a greater understanding of how the brain works and how we can utilise that knowledge for better notetaking, improved reading, stronger memory, etc. Most of the information within this book has been repeated (on many occasions) in Buzan's other works in more detail (ie., separate publications of memory, speed reading and mindmapping.) What this book does provide though is a 'context' for the more detailed reading that you will NEED to do once completing this book. Mind mapping is not explained in depth in this book and you will want to find something else to cover that topic in more depth. Memory techniques are little more than intimated at in this publication so if you want to take that further it's another book again. This volume isn't expensive so start here to set the scene for more specific brain techniques.
"Buzan needs work on clarity", Overall the book is short, succint, and gets the basics of how the brain, eyes, and body work to remember information. His idea of 'mind-mapping' is interesting and the color diagrams that he provides help readers start using 'mind-mapping' techniques. However, the book lacks clarity on the explanations of each section - particularly on the section about reading and increasing reading speed. His diagrams also do not always stay in touch with the explanations on the direct page. Thus, sometimes the diagrams confuse the reader rather than help illustrate his point.
"Very useful and practical!", Tony Buzan is one of the pioneers of the "Brain science". He studies how the brain works and then teaches us how we should use it. Although the first edition of this book was written in 1974, it is still considered to present the "modern approach". The book follows a logical sequence - from explaining how the brain works and how it should be used, through lessons on speed reading and mind mapping, and finishing off with a section on study techniques. The book is full of illustrations and graphs and it is very easy to read. I would recommend this book to every student or self student. It will improve your study productivity and your memory a lot. Perhaps it should be also combined with other books by Buzan, especially Speed Reading and Make the Most of Your Mind. I only wish I had discovered Buzan earlier.
