"Great SCI FI book"
This is book 4. You should read the book in order. This is the best group of books I have read in a long time. If you like non-stop action these books are for you. Well worth your money.

"Another solid sequel"
If you enjoyed the previous volumes of the series you won't be disappointed.
Four star rating reflects no so much the quality of the story but the remarkable consistency starting with volume one. Don't mean the book's not good. It is. Not the best SF novel I've ever read but most certainly an entertaining read. There are a few weak points like excessive soul searching and self disparaging discourses on the main protagonists part that sometimes were rather tiresome overall pretty solid job I'd say. Start with volume one and you'll know soon enough whether you'll like the rest.

"Redundent"
Good story still but less and less pages each book plus he keeps wasting pages on explaining everything everybook i mean if your reading book 4 and dont know how the meeting room works just give up reading

"Good military SF"
If you haven't read the first three books in this series, go back and start at the beginning. If you have read them and enjoyed them, you will like this installment as well. Like most military SF it suffers from stuffiness -- since everyone is SO sincere, and SO self-sacrificing (except for the baddies of course, who are SO self-serving, and SO sincere in their maliciousness). However, this series doesn't seem to be quite as over the top in this regard as, say, the works of David Weber. Nevertheless it lacks the saving and ingratiating humor of Lois Bujold's Vorkosigan series.

Once past that (and the ridiculous cover art -- I mean, our hero is a fleet commander, not a marine grunt; come on!) this volume, like the others, is well plotted, with an interesting protagonist, who is presented with some interesting problems. And the space battles seem "realistic" (given the assumed technology of this future), fought with very clever tactics and stratagems.

In short, it was good enough that I will buy the next volume in the series to see how things -- if not "work out" -- progress.

"Feels good to read"
This is the fourth book I have purchased in the series Lost Fleet. The story is put together with large epic pieces looming forming the back drop of an intricate dance of small details that unfold for Captain Black Jack Geary. Jack's injection of fleet combat over a up and down series of subplots is done in true story teller style. This book is polite to it's readers, keeping tradition with "The just shall prevail" and dishing up a nice serving of inter-character drama.

While I found myself looking forward to finding out "who did what" rushing me to the next chapter, there is a upsetting side effect of finishing the book. I would like to read more .... alas, I will need patience.

While reading this series, see if you can piece together some joking jabs at what is possibly Jack's own passion, writing. I say possibly because I do not know him. However his imagination is organized and fun to unpack after a hard days work.

What our customer's say!

"Space Hero", One book that is difficult to put down. Almost like watching 24 on the tube; I always want to see the next episode. Look forward to book 5 in April.

"A Boring Triangle", I loved the first three books and couldn't wait to get my hands on this one. Unfortunately I thought it fell flat. The space battles seemed earily familiar...maybe too much like previous battles in books 1, 2, and 3?

But worse, in my opinion, is the divergence into the love triangle between Geary and the two female leads. Rione's character was always somewhat one-dimensional, and in this book she's just extra baggage. And the forbidden love between Desjani and Geary is nauseating. There is no surprise, no subtlety, and not even much in the way of actual romance in the way this story line unfolds. The reader sees it all coming and is powerless to divert it. Perhaps it is necessary to throw the "romance angle" so as to stretch it out to the originally planned five books, but I personally would vote to jettison the allegedly romantic bits out the nearest airlock and finish up the story. After all, the readers are science fiction fans and if we wanted romance we'd go order a Harlequin.

I loved the first books and am still going to read the last one but I am only giving this one three stars. If this had been the first of the series I would never have continued onto later installments but having read the first books I know what Campbell is capable of and I am hoping he will deliver in the final book.

"Jumping Back to Go Forward...", The Lost Fleet continues to be lost in alien space. Captain Jack Geary continues to fight for his fleet's survival, against elements in his own fleet, and to maintain a balance between the perception of him as a hero and himself as a human being with human failings.

If you enjoyed the first three books, then there should be no reason not to enjoy this one. Those who want the plot to proceed more quickly may be frustrated. The fleet has returned to Lakota, where they faced a punishing battle. This time, however, things have changed. Geary knows about the mysterious aliens who helped bring the enemy Syndic fleet against him and his people are now catching on to how the aliens are tracking them and also what may be their motives, at least in part. He also knows more about how the Syndics operate and can begin to exploit their weaknesses. He's also more able to make use of turning the hearts and minds of the civilians who are tired of war and not happy about how they are treated by those in power. So things are progressing, too slowly for some, perhaps, but I'm still willing to enjoy the ride and see where it goes.

"Miserly with plot points", This guy hoards plot points like he's gonna run out! What gives? Why the hesitation to dish out real character changes and real events? It makes the novel so monochromatic.

Waaaaaay too much repetition in this installment in what's overall a pretty good series. It just felt like the characters spent all their time in the same three rooms talking about the same three things. I don't need to read any more about the real Jack vs the mythic Jack-- unless there's something new to talk about. I don't need to read any more about the Madame President or whatever and her jealousy or non-jealousy or whatever. I just got old!

Why the reluctance to give more detail about the aliens? Why the reluctance to have more space battles? Why the reluctance to have more action take place on the ships or have them put into port somewhere so they can get off the ship and have Jack go meet some freakin' new people for once? It's a novel, you can do anything you want!

I'll still get the next novel in this series, but man I hope it's better than this one.

"Starting to Drag", I agree with everyone else who said this book was a step back from the previous three. The battles felt flat, I'm starting to get tired of the stock "isn't it funny how the Navy still does ____ but no one remembers why?" type scenes, and there was absolutely ZERO character or plot development in this chapter of the overall saga

Basically, other than having two people admit they're attracted to each other, nothing special happens for 300 pages.

Valiant felt, to me, like it was rushed out to satisfy a schedule. I had alot of trouble visualizing the things that the book was describing, a first in this series, and when I got to the end of the book I felt like I'd just read the first chapter of a story

Loved the first three, hope the next two are WAY better than this. If book 5 isn't a big step up I won't bother with book 6

Read this reviews before You buy...

"Can't put it down", I'm not one for writing reviews, so I'll just say I really like this series. Jack Campbell has been able to describe enough detail that I can see the scenes playing out in my mind. I can't wait for the last 2 books to come out.

"Excellet series", I am not much at writing book reviews, I only know one thing in regards to the books that I read. That is did I enjoy the book? In this case I would have to say that yes I do. I wholeheartedly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys Military SciFi. The science, as little as the author goes into it, seems believable and the mysteries associated with the different characters and the aliens only grows deeper as the series progresses. In this book the conspiracy against 'Black Jack' Geary grows in scope as the conspirators grow ever more desperate to remove him from command. Also the possible motives for both the conspirators and the aliens are probed deeper than before. Overall this book continues the excellence of the series and shows what potential it has for the ending.

"Great Series, naval action and Sci Fi at its best", I love this series, its a good read and great characters. I am enjoying the new novel in the series "Valiant" but I don't want to read to fast becuase I don't know when the next one will be published. Black Jack Geary is a mix between Kirk and Picard (Star Trek fame).

"Losing its way", I was looking forward to this as the series has kept my interest so far, but now it seems to be rehashing the previous plots. Did anything new happen?

Do we not see the plots of the previous books,

Flee from the enemy, can't seem to shake them, have a battle, survive, find a new idea based on an old idea, have plotters and detractors, fight the feelings of love...

This book didn't move enough of the overall plot. Perhaps Campbell got a multi book deal and is stretching it.

"Very enjoyable!!", I enjoy these types of books. The waiting for the next one is painful however.

Good books, getting a bit predictable, but that's ok for mindless enjoyment.
I would also check out Helforts war.
