"Good, But Not Great."
The pros: it has before and after shots showing different living rooms and how to arrange the furniture and pictures on the walls to make the room flow. it is an easy read and doesn't get boring half way through. The suggestions are easy to implement into your home. in the book, each room shows what has been re-arranged, taken out, bought, and borrowed from other rooms in the home.

The cons: all the pictures are black and white, a few color pics would have been helpful for color ideas. it needs more pictures of the rooms instead of just one or two. as newlyweds we came from an apartment into our four bedroom home and we don't have the furniture to "borrow" from other rooms to complete the look. one of the reasons i bought this book is to learn how to decorate with what we have without having to buy a lot of new things. this book is good if you have an established home with more furniture.

"Best do-it-yourself decorating book"
This book is the most down-to-earth realistic book I have seen for the DIY person. The most important things individuals need to know, design principles are all included. The layout of the book with before and after picures and sidebars that list what is wrong and then what has been changed I consider to be priceless. Each chapter is easy to read. This book will always be at hand in my home.
Thank you Lauri Ward for giving me the encouragement and know-how to get my home looking its best.

"Common Sense Advice"
This book reminds us that we love our homes because they are ours, not some decorator's. So much of what she says is just common sense, but in the craziness of buying and decorating a home, you often forget to use your common sense.

"Great Advice For Decorating On A Budget"
As an interior designer who decided to switch over to one day decorating, I have heard a lot about Lauri Ward and her books. Her first, Use What You Have Decorating, is a real eye-opener because it shows how much can be done in only a couple of hours without spending money... pretty impressive stuff, even for a jaded designer.

The book focuses on 10 common mistakes by showing before and after photos of real homes. The pictures are black and white which, in this information-packed book, make it easy to zero in on how she fixed the problems.

Overall, it is an excellent buy for anyone - experienced designers, homeowners who want to fix up or sell their home or renters - who wants to make a room look its best quickly, just by using what is already there .

"Opt for free tv show"
The book was nothing more than old black and white photos, boring and hard to really depict what was being redone. I have seriously learned more from one or two hgtv programs about redesign and makeovers than I did reading every word and studying photo in this ininviting, uninstructional book. This is the worst book buying decision I have made in more than a decade. I wish I could get my money back!

What our customer's say!

"Good book but it gets tiresome", Laurie Ward has hit on a great idea here - redecorating with your own stuff. And she does give some great advice in this book about creating a conversation area situated around a focal point, and about how high to hang art. I have been "tweaking" my house ever since I read the book and for the most part her suggestions are very helpful. I also enjoyed the "before" and "after" photos of real peoples' homes. But a couple things bothered me about this book. The first two-thirds of the book are basically paraphrased repetitions of this idea: create a U-shaped conversation area around a focal point. By the fifth or sixth example, you're thinking "gee, I wonder what genius furniture arrangement she'll come up with this time...SURPRISE! U-shaped conversation area!" She gives only a little information on how to re-arrange a dining room, bedroom, bathroom, or ANY OTHER room in the house (and what about those of us with open floor plans? throw me a bone here!), and what few suggestions she does give seem to have been added as an afterthought. The other thing I did not like is a matter of taste more than anything else: I thought some of her advice was a bit old-school (and not in a good way), in particular her advice about how to arrange and group art and other decorative objects (i.e., "don't mix media"), but also her advice against using fridge magnets and patterned paper towels comes off as a bit snobby. However, overall I do recommend the book if you need some help rearranging your living room.

"practical budget friendly", I give the book a 4 star rating. Would have been good if we had some colour photos and show some living rooms that do not have the fire place a the focal point of the room but some other feature. Also how do you decorate a room with steep dormer features, that create angles. I like Lauri's books though I have Home Therapy.

"I love this book!", I am a professional interior designer and I found this book great because it provides great information in a easy to read format. I read more than half the book in one evening. Some people have stated that even though they love the book they wished it was in color. I love the book in black and white because the emphasis really is on the placement and not so much the color. I find that when items are related in color it is easy for the eye to make the "connection" and ignore the real placement of the items. When the pictures are in black and white, it forces the eye to look at where and how the items are placed. This is a great book and I would recommend it to the novice, lay person, or professional designer/decorator looking to add an additional service that they can offer their clients. I give it two thumbs up!

"Use What You Have", This is a good book for people who have no experience or formal training with decorating. I found the top 10 tips for avoiding design disaster to be helpful and easy to understand. The pictures in the book are very outdated, but made me feel like I might have a fighting chance with my own space.

"One of my favorite decorating books...", ...and yet I only give it 4 stars. Why? Because first of all, there is very little advice that applies beyond the living room, and that's a formal living area - not the family gathering and watching TV area. I would love to see a book of hers that will address other areas in the house.

Beyond that though, I love this book. I'm a down to earth person, always looking for a quick and cheap way to re-do things. This book taught me decorating principles that were easy to put into practice. I like the before and after pics, explanations and the occassional room layouts. After studying this book a few times, it took me less than an hour to re-arrange my living room. It's so much more inviting and comfortable now, that I don't want to leave it! As for color vs. black and white photos, of course I'd prefer color. But I can live with it, because the content is so helpful. I have the older version too that has a middle insert of color photos as well.

This book will be helpful if you already have a house of furniture or maybe suffer from TMS syndrome (too much stuff) and if you enjoy being creative with what you have. If not, then this book will probably frustrate you.

Read this reviews before You buy...

"10 Principles to redesign your home", I could not put this book down!!! The Before and After pictures were amazing. They really helped drive the design principles "home" for me. I picked up many interesting and useful decorating tips. I can not wait to employ them in my home. I highly recommend this book.

"Floor plans galore and use what you have to boot...", At first I was a little turned off by the black and white photos and the outdated furniture, but as I dug into the content of the books I realized this book has a wealth of knowledge any homeowner could use on traffic flow, how to arrange what you have in the most effective way, and helps you see your home from a perspective outside of your own vision. This book also gives you helpful tips on art arrangement and lighting. Especially good for home stagers who need a little more reference on furniture placement and traffic flow. It was a great investment for me and I reference frequently in my home staging business.

"Great resource!!!", This book is wonderful! I love it! It's easy to understand and very helpful. It's my favorite design/decorating book to date. I wish there were more like this one. The illustrations are in black and white and might look nicer in color, but it's still a pleasure to look through.

Definitely for those challenged when it comes to arranging furniture and a great buy for those on a budget.

"A must for the non-decorator, non-designer", Before you buy another piece of furniture, art or accessory, do yourself a favor and read this book! The author educates by example with explanations and before & after photos of furniture placement, balance, etc. Her book does what dozens of other books I've purchased over the years have not - explains how to look at a room and see design errors the way a decorator/designer does, and explains how to fix them. I have a new appreciation of all my pretty home design picture books and am re-doing all my rooms with a confidence I've never had.

"Finally, some good basic principles for home decorating!", OK, so this book is a bit old now and I found it late. But- the advice is timeless and very useful. Unlike so many decorating books that are just filled with pictures of beautiful rooms in beautiful homes, this book gives you some basic principles so you can make your own stuff beautiful in your own home. Some of the decorating that I had already done in my home I really like, and this book tells me the principle behind what I did - why I like it. Some of the decorating I have done in my own home I don't like, and this book tells me what I can do to fix it.
So, the mysteries of balance, alignment, furniture arrangement, displaying stuff, grouping pictures, etc are solved. My only problem with the book is the section on wall color. That was very brief and not very satisfactory, and she basically suggests that white walls are a good (safe) choice. There is no section on decorating color schemes either and that would be helpful. This is why I gave the book only 4 stars rather than 5.
