"not quite what i expect but still a good read"
This book was not qutie what I have come to expect of an In Death book, however it was not the greatest disappointment in a new book in a series I've read this year. I think this one was probably so mellow because of what probably happens in the next book. You know we have the big bacholorette/wedding shower, the wedding of charles and louise. I don't doubt that some time down the road we will see roarke and eve having a child--coolest if they actually have to deal with the pregnancy but some how I see them taking in an innocent from one of the cases.

"Phoned In - In Death Novel "
Normally I read Robb's novels in a day or so because I *have* to know what happens to the characters and then I'll go back, reread, and savor those little details and plot points that make the "In Death series" pop. Not this time.

It took me more than a week to finish this book and the only way I got through it was to treat it like a required reading assignment for school.

As others have mentioned, there is no character development in this book and the mystery is subpar. The supporting characters, who normally add such richness to these novels, are simply shadows of themselves and have had their personalities removed. Not a good thing for a personality driven series.

I gave the book three stars because it was nice to see Robb break from the "somehow everything's connected to Roarke's past and businesses" but other than that there isn't much here for the true fan.

"Did I miss the party?"
I enjoyed this book, but not to the same degree I've enjoyed others in the series. The crime solving aspects were good, but not as compelling or suspenseful as others have been. And, while there were some nice romantic scenes between Eve and Roarke, there was no romantic tension or anticipation amongst any of the characters. I was a bit disappointed that the other characters (except Roarke and Peabody) weren't present/participating to the same degree as usual and I missed them.

My title for this review - (*minor spoiler ahead?) there were a few scenes addressing the planning of a bachelorette party that sounded like it would be a good opportunity for great character interaction - but it didn't occur in this book! (unless my audio version skipped a chapter??)

Overall - this one lacked suspense and it would have benefitted from greater participation from the rest of the gang. Regardless, it's an enjoyable read that will hold your attention. I wouldn't miss it if your a fan of the series!

"Almost 5 Stars"
Salvation in Death is the latest in the long-line of J. D. Robb bestsellers about Eve Dallas and Rourke - it is also one of the better ones. The book follows the usual "in death" format - a crime is committed (in this case a priest & a preacher is off'd) and Eve spends the rest of the book solving the case with the help of a huge and flavorful supporting cast of characters. Of course, in the midst of the crime is usually a secondary story involving one or more of Eve's friends and a problem they are facing. This particular book looked at old ghosts of both Eve and Rourke in a way that seemed to pull them even closer in their marriage. The book was really excellent, as Eve uncovers more and more layers to a supposedly simply crime and digs through 45 years of past histories and incidents in order to finally discover "who did it". The reason I did not give it 5 stars was because at times the plot seemed to linger on unnecessary details that had little to do with the solution to the crime. But hey, a minor complaint at best. The book held my interest, didn't give away the ending, and added another rich layer to the Eve/Rourke relationship. Considering the fact that the series is still going strong after 25+ books, Robb really is to be congratulated and envied at the abundance of talent and imagination God has graced her with. Good going, Ms. Robb (aka Nora Roberts)

"Not in her usual style"
I do not see J.D. Robb's usual style in this book. The reading of it did not flow, there was not a lot of character development. It almost felt like a synopsis. Her use of discriptives varied from previous books, words she has used almost exclusively in past books were changed.
During the reading of the book I had envisioned a different and more satisfying reason for the main murder. One that would have reflected how the man had changed. I also missed the usual cast of characters, their use in this book seemed almost an afterthought.
I hope the next book will return the her usual great style.

"This was Robb's best", This was a smart and well thought out plot. I wasn't able to put the book down. The pages just flew right by.

"Worst in the series", I've read every book in this series and enjoyed all of them except this one. When a friend told me not to waste my time reading it, I thought she must have been having a bad day. Unfortunately, I had to slog my way through it, hoping it would get better. I was very, very disappointed in the book.

"A thrill a minute", Eve Dallas mid 21st century NY cop and her multi-billionarie husband Roarke are on the case of a murdered Catholic Priest where they immediately have more questions than answers another murdered religious icon and thrills that don't stop until you read the last line.
If you follow the series this is the 27th in the series where you'll get to catch up on all your favorite supporting characters and find out what they're up to now.
If you prefer stand a-lones this one stands all by it's self.

"A weak entry in the "In Death" series", Like other reviewers have stated, parts of this novel seemed phoned in. Where is our edgy Eve, our cagey Rourke, our sassy Peabody?? It felt like the characters were just going through the motions. I was wondering where Mavis was when she suddenly popped in! No repartee with Summerset? And Robb has annoying habit of popping in information that helps solve the case. I've noticed that in every one of her books, where suddenly, she'll make a lightening leap of logic that enables her to solve the case. A flaw? Only if overused.

Three stars for this novel.

"Salvation in Death", Supurb! I think this is the best of the entire series (and I have every one). Just a great murder mystery. They always have me from the beginning but this one I really couldn't put down.

I was beginning to wonder if this series hadn't just about run its course but if they continue like this one I'm in for the duration.

The characters are all there and keeping with their assorted chacteristics, as a matter of a fact each book adds more. It makes for a better rounded Eve.

My only dissappointment in the book is that the author seems to have forgotten about DNA.

Keep them coming! Nora

"Part great, part phoned in", How the mystery is laid out, and the final take down are very consistent with every other book in the series and quite well done. Because one of these murders brings up an ethical question related to Marlena's death, Eve and Roarke end up delving into that situation, and how things rippled out from his form of justice. There are at least two great discussions between Eve and Roarke, two wonderful love/sex scenes that really stand out (one quite funny), and some funny bits of dialog concerning Mira and a purse, Eve and learning the rhumba, Peabody and donuts, coffee or food in general, and a touching moment involving petunias (which Eve had in her wedding bouquet).

Now for the drawbacks. Unlike every other book in the series, the use of the supporting characters is kept to an absolute minimum if they're shown at all (Charles and Louise). Peabody is shown the most but less than usual, and Mira, McNab, Nadine, Feeney, Mavis, Baxter, Trueheart and even Summerset are reduced to plot points. We see more of Ariel, a woman that Eve saved in a previous book, than we do those who are nearest and dearest. Roarke has invested in her cake business, she's brought a stunning one by for Eve, and she's already working on Charles and Louise's wedding cake.

Speaking of Charles and Louise. Their wedding is at Eve and Roarke's, and the wedding shower is mentioned as something that Eve will be hosting but will only have to show up for...and that's it. We didn't get Eve & Roarke's wedding, and it looks like this isn't something the reader will be a part of either.

Another reviewer said that she'd like to see more conflict between Eve & Roarke given their clashing personalities, but I disagree. They've already worked out a lot of their issues after nearly two years of marriage, and I'd rather not repeat a whole variety of things that have been dealt with. For a less-extreme example, in a few books Eve has an insecure moment where she wonders why Roarke is with her, and after the first time, he starts getting frustrated and then angry. He views it as an insult of not only herself but of him, and that should be so over by now. IMO we'll always have the clash of her black/white and his gray standards, but we don't need to see them in every book with every case.

"She just keeps getting better!", I really don't know how she does it. I think I would use all my ideas in one book were I to write one, but JD Robb comes up with such great stuff that even modern TV shows have to steal from her (CSI a couple of weeks ago was SO Portrait in Death)

Her writing was up to her usual par, and the story was fascinating. The religious facet was an interesting exploration. Bravo!

"Not Her Best", I love the In Death series but I was a little disappointed in Salvation In Death. I liked the fact that Eve wasn't as bad-tempered as usual but the story was missing something. Would I recommend it? Sure. It's a good book, just not one of her best.

"A More Settled Eve", At this point in their relationship I would have thought Roarke and Eve would have had a bit more conflict. The depiction of the relationship for two people with such violent and intense backgrounds has them settling down very quickly into marital routine, and Roarke's showing up at Cop Central and being citizen consultant is getting stretched a bit thin at this point. The book procedurally is fascinating but misses because it doesn't really allow Eve to delve into and exam what faith and salvation really mean to her. I love these characters and my husband and I both read the books and talk about all the people in them as if we knew them personally -- if I had just met them in this book I do not think I would invest my time in future books.

"As good as ever!!", I enjoyed this book in the series as much as some and more than others. I did miss more with Feeney and Nadine and the others but I have to agree with some of the other reviewers. This was more about the mystery and less about all the characters lives. Plus the fact that Eve had two deaths that were similar but really not the same.

I was wondering how come there were so many serial killers and fanatics in Eve and Roarke's lives in previous books. So it was fun to have a different type of case that was interesting and new.

If you have read any of the others in the series, by all means, get this one. If not, WHY NOT!!!!
