"Get out your "readers!""
A good "bible" type book for house lovers (buyers, sellers, architects, Realtors, etc.) However, the print is itty bitty, so be sure to have a magnifying glass or some readers handy. There is a lot of information and many black and white photographs along with intricate drawings. It almost feels like a college textbook (good thing it's a paperback!). Good reference book.

"A very useful book "
This book has been one of the most fascinating and useful books I have read. It is laid out in an easy-to-use manner, and is packed full of information that is useful for an amatuer old-house lover, or as a reference for a professional. It follows the history and evolution of homebuilding consecutively from pre-1600's-current (the book was published in 1984, so it is lacking the last 20 years, though). Each style of house or time period has it's own chapter, which goes into depth detailing the features that are unique to and commonly found in that style. It also includes many pictures displaying these features.

The first few chapters of the book introduce you to the basics of house form, structure, and style, and provide a wealth of information on how to look at a house and identify it using key features. It literally is a field guide! I have learned so much about the way a house is constructed, how house layouts have evolved through the years, and learned the names and meanings of all the different parts of a house. It has been fascinating. My husband and I met with a home builder last week, and I was able to comfortably converse with him and understand everything he said because of having read this book recently!
I can't begin to describe all that this book contains. Highly recommended!

"A Field Guide to American Houses"
I've actually purchased two of this book, one as a gift. It is a 'coffee table' book that will actually get used. It is a great reference book and an interesting book to spend some time with. The explanatory illustrations are exceptional, and the photographic examples provide more than just an example. Looking at these photographs you can travel back in time and different periods of American history. Some of the houses are abandoned and run down which in no way lessens the impact of their design and grandeur.

Early in the book, most houses are named and the location given. However, the newer houses toward the back are not so identified. This is not a problem as much as it is a disappointment.

"Helpful for those wanting to buy a house for a B&B"
I've wanted this book for years, but just recently had an excuse to buy it, prior to looking for a home to purchase as a bed and breakfast. Guests expect the innkeeper to know about the period and history of the B&B in which they're staying. In addition, this book will be extremely helpful in any home purchase, whether for a B&B or not.

"architecturally impaired"
I use this book at work and around others in the building industry. Many times a client says she wants "mediterranean" yet when she describes what she likes, its clearly NOT medit. I can quickly correct the client. This is just like an encyclopedia of architectural styles.

What our customer's say!

"A must have!!!", I bought this book as reference material on the advice of an architect friend. He told me "If you need help figuring out the style of a house then buy this book" and he showed me his copy. He was right. The book is well organized which helps compare styles quickly and the many black and white pictures of houses that the author uses as examples are great because the b&w contrast helps your eye focus on details. This a great book to have in any architectural office. Its great for novices and experienced alike.

"Great resource for writers", As a writer, you need lots of details to keep the reader interested, and this book has details on houses most people wouldn't know. Of course, if you give no details the story is not interesting, and if you give wrong details, some reader will know it and be disapointed. A book like this can be invaluable.

"A great description of historical architecture styles", After some introductory chapters on the history and theory of homebuilding, the McAlesters commence with descriptions of the different styles. Each major style is described with a large stylized diagram with its identifying features labeled, a description of the major subtypes, descriptions of the style's unique elements, a paragraph on the frequency and locations of its occurrence, some historical comments, and then dozens of black and white photographs. The styles are ordered roughly chronologically, from native dwellings and colonial houses in 1600 to the neoeclectric houses of the 1970s and 1980s. (Even my 2006 printing ended with the 1980s.)

I read the field guide cover to cover - something I never before done with a field guide. By the end, it seemed repetitive, but overall I was impressed with almost everything about this book from the introductions to the last diagrams. Every time I travel though a historical neighborhood, I am glad that I read this book.

"Great Resource", Great book!!! I'm using for my company to get a true representation of many styles for many of the house I'm designing. A great resource for any firm!!!

"great book for the housing history", great at housing history
great describe for the house component
good picture to show handy book to show at real estate

"Valuable Visual Resource", This book is a valuable VISUAL resource to understanding American residential architecture. Filled with photos and illustrations, and covering everything between traditional Native American dwellings to more contemporary and revival styles, the reader can locate the visual clues that identify each style.
Especially helpful for the novice (like me!) are the Pictorial Key and Glossary at the beginning of the book, diagraming basic building styles with architectural terminology. I have always loved architecture, but lacked the language to describe various building parts -- this book is the aid I needed to verbalize, and identify the structural elements defining residential architecture.

"A Study Guide", This book is a handy intro to American architecture. It helps to have a bit of a background before reading it, although a beginner wouldn't have too much trouble figuring things out. I use it as a quick reference and an easy way to study, but I wouldn't recommend it for really detailed research. It is exactly what it says: a field giude. The illustrations are concise and easy to read, and the descriptions are brief but specific. The glossary is good for basic terms, but probably not as useful for intricacies.

"Carries the Freight", Well organized, thought out, and written. Heavy emphasis on house styles and architectural types rather than naming and describing the various pieces and parts of a structure. Overall, a good standard reference text that covers most dwelling architectural categories. If you have this one you probably won't need a second similar such book in your library.

"An Excellent Reference", As an architect, I use this book as a reference tool. The library of photos contained within this book sometimes help when trying to develop the characteristics of a certain style of building. I have even used to with a few clients who say thay want this or that look. I then have them thumb through this book and show them the style they have mentioned only to have then say "No, this is the style I'm talking about" pointing to another style.

It is a very useful tool for understanding the differences between styles (even though buildings are often blurred and composits of styles). In addition, it is an excellent visual aid for reference.

"And it has a Sears Home inside!! ", For many years, I've written about historic architecture and vintage homes and have also written four books on this topic (including "The Houses That Sears Built").

Throughout these many years of writing and researching, I've kept this "Field Guide to American Houses" close at hand.

It's an *excellent* reference work and my copy is nearly worn out from repeated use. This book is well-organized and laid out and enables a laymen to find (and use) the *RIGHT* name for an old house and its appendages. In addition to general housing styles, it also has detailed drawings showing proper architectural terms for parts and pieces of an old house. Lots of good photos and drawings. Great resource.

One curious aside (and tidbit): It shows a Spanish-style mission home (page 408 "Eclectic Houses; Mission"). The house featured on this page is actually a Sears kit home, The Alhambra. Why they chose to feature a Sears kit home without identifying it as such is a little surprising, but interesting!
