"Warning: Higher Level Humor" This is my favorite book. I am so looking forward to the update. The best way to read this book is to know just a little bit about a subject then use it to fill the gap. It is not detailed but just enough that you get the "gist" of things.
"Too bad." Well, I was really looking forward to it, and read a fair portion of the Religion section, but found the tone of it really annoying, not enough depth on the subject, and the author makes too many inside jokes. If you get the jokes, you already know the information and you don't need to read it. If you don't get the jokes, it is leaves you as an outsider and learn nothing. I'll keep reading it, and amend the review if I have to.
My advice: Go to Barnes & Noble and take a look (and just to be fair to our host, consider ordering it from here). If you read a section, and enjoy it, buy it. If it is offputting like it was to me, don't.
"Fun and informative" Whether you're searching for specific information or just scanning through, this book is produced so beautifully that it ends up being entertaining and educational. The segments are concise, but you feel as if you have taken a course in the subject. I bought it as a gift for my husband, but the entire family is thoroughly enjoying it!
"Completely Brief" I like that this book touches upon topics that many of us only learn to appreciate after we've left school. So even if something was taught in school, it probably slipped away from us quite easily. Plus, it touches upon the desire to know as much as you can about everything.
Unfortunately, this is an attempt at a quick fix (despite the book's length) for something that takes a lifetime to take in, and even then you need to make choices about what you can read deeply and read deeply over again so that you can feel comfortable talking about it.
As a result, the book reads something like taking in a newspaper by reading the headlines and lead paragraphs and then tossing it aside. Additionally, the tone is often frivolous, rather that witty, which it seems to strive at. This surprised me the most given the title of the book, which implies a desire to confront the gaps and triviality of many schools. But having read through enough of the book, and having been trained as a teacher, this has similar pitfalls of secondary education: fear of difficult material, and short, watered-down summaries of major figures, works, and concepts.
"Just Go Ahead and Buy it!" I LOVE this book! Loaded with facts we all should have learned, condensed into bite sized portions and written with a very quick wit. People keep talking me into letting them have my copy- so this is the 4th time that I have bought this book!

What our customer's say!
"not very useful", i was very dissapointed with the information in this book, it was a boring read as well.
"Glib, clever, cynical, and nearly empty;", This is that rare book that is not merely bad, but despicable. Sadly, it serves as exemplar of the very problem it claims to attack, which according to the glib introduction, is "a world of bits and bytes, of reruns and fast forwards, of information overloads and significant shortfalls."
The authors are too much in love with their own cleverness to provide the curious reader with lucid information, preferring to sabotage clarity with cynicism and loading the text with parenthetical references to pop culture, to the reader, and of course, to the authors themselves.
"Five Composers Whose Names Begin with the Letter P" is a pithy chapter head for bookstore browsing, but should a more complete education really include Poulenc and not Debussy? And if Puccini was lucky enough to have the right initial, why not explain what makes his music perennially popular, rather than making the gratuitous observation that Verdi fans may find him vulgar? Now in its third presumably profitable edition, this book is that most vulgar of accomplishments, the triumph of marketing over content. Puccini's operas, in contrast, are awash in gorgeous melody.
"Afraid I Lost It", I recently had to move and I lost a couple boxes of books. The first book I thought of was An Incomplete Education. Finding it wasn't lost made my day all by itself.
"A definate must read!", Chock full of stuff that you shoulda learned in school but didn't. I wasn't interested in it at first, but it was recommended to me by a family member and I'm glad it was. Funny And informative.
"Will this book make me a smarter person?", This is not a "breezy little book of interesting facts" you will have hours of fun reading. It actually assumes you know a great deal more about the items it intends to teach you than you probably do.
I would say it is as much fun as reading a text book, but in truth, it is as much fun as reading 3,684 text books. Yes, that much fun.

Read this reviews before You buy...
"Readers like reviewer Kaaren M. think", Readers like reviewer Kaaren M. think this book should be as dull as your High School Civics class was. This book has a refreshing sense of humor and cuts to the chase better than many tomes on the individual subjects. If you want a Cliff's notes to crib for your tests, like many reviewers here seem to need, you probably ought to start there.
"Some People Have No Sense Of Humor", People who pan this book can't seem to grasp the fact that a reference book doesn't have to be dry and boring to be informative. Not only does this book provide a wealth of information about everything from chemistry to classical music, it is also laugh-out-loud funny!
I bought the first edition of this book years ago, and I still refer back to it often for the simple joy of reading it. I learn something new every time I pick it up.
Highly recommended!
"Nothing quite as frustrating as an extended intellectual misfire", I appreciate brevity. Seems to me most commentary and analysis goes on too long. That was my attraction to this title, but that's not the problem here. Every topic is handled concisely though often not very effectively. The problem here is a twisted central view that produces sheer nuttiness like this books anachronistic take on Freud. I wish I had more time to elaborate, but, suffice it to say, you WILL be disappointed. This book is about a dozen re-writes from something worthwhile, and I wish I'd looked the reference section over a little more rigorously before wasting my money on this tome.
"THIS BOOK DOES WHAT IT SAYS IT WILL ! !", I had given this book 4 stars in an earlier review, but AFTER READING OTHER REVIEWER'S COMMENTS (below) I am upgrading my rating to 5 STARS !!
I think that people need to read the book's introduction to see what the book is SUPPOSED to do before they slam it.
No, the book isn't going to be exhaustive or complete. How can it be? It's only one book and it's not even that thick!
The idea is just to learn enough of someone else's subject so you can navigate and know what they are talking about. You will need to read about it in more detail elsewhere, but at least this book will help you get started.
I did not find any SIGNIFICANT factual errors in the book. Perhaps in a book that attempts to cover all knowledge of the known (and unknown) world there might be an itty bitty error here or there, but I did not notice any. One assumes the authors used appropriate consultants for certain subjects. In the subjects that I am trained in, there were no errors.
Also, I did not find the authors to be condescending, nor did the humor interfere with my learning. In fact, my enjoyment and learning were increased.
That said, I would have to agree that completely serious, humorless people will not be happy with this book.
"Disappointed", "Should have learned" is the key phrase in my review. Should have learned according to whose opinion is the question? This authors, apparently in order to sell books. I ordered this book, reviewed it and then returned it. It is packed with factual information, but 90% of it is irrelevant and you will never have the use for it. I am an elementary school teacher and I bought this to use as a reference for tid bits of information here and there to engage my students. There is nothing engaging about this book.
