Others say...
"Best & only complete Livecycle Designer book for beginners to experts" I'm a CPA by trade and I've got to say I've never wrote a review except on JP Terry's book "Adobe LiveCycle Designer". I'm a believer is this book!!!!!
Already, the reason should be clear that I'm fascinated by the way the book takes a layman through the complexity of utilizing LiveCycle. I'm a true convert for the information within the book and will be signing up for JP Terry's Smart Doc services in order to gain a further understanding of JavaScript 1.6. I've never programmed anything as a CPA but beleive strongly in knowing what JP Terry can teach in a short concise manner.
Additionally, I must say I've never meet JP Terry or even thought about learning JavaScript but this was an eye opening experience.
If you are a layman faced with business processes that are hard to capture and put your arms around---then this is the book to use.
Thank you JP and Adobe for bringing something complex down to earth for us unsophisticated users.
"BUY THIS BOOK NOW!" LOVE THIS BOOK, IT TOTALLY ROCKS! Anyone who wants to learn more about Livecycle and actually learn how to use all of the amazing functions built into the software for building forms, this is the book to buy. Adobe should make this a part of their Classroom in A Book Series for this software. The author explains most of the features in laymans terms and also adds some extra tidbits for the coders and programmers out there looking to use the software to it's maximum potential. It is useful for the most inexperienced to most advanced users. As someone who trains others how to use this software, I have found it great resource to provide for my students!
"Smart Document (PDF) beginners book" If you are new to smart documents and would like to get use to it, this book is for you.
The book works great with Adobe Livecycle Designer 8.0 and 7.0. It covers designing basics and a little bit of scripting knowledge.
A Programmer Prospective ------------------------ The book can be used to design Adobe Forms with all kind a controls (text boxes, check boxes etc). If you need simple fillable PDF forms and your budget does not allow you to spend $10K+ on complete Adobe package, Grab this book with a 3rd party managed API (e.g PDF4NET by O2).
"Great Book" This book gave me all the answers I needed. I struggled with some of the instructions because I was using version 7.0 and some things did not line up with version 8.0. Scripting was a little difficult at first but after playing around I got the form to do exactly what I wanted. There was reference to a form that I never did find in either version 7.0 or 8.0.
Although a little expensive, if you want to get a form developed and in production quickly this book can help.
"Really a 5 stars book." It's a great book by a writer that realy knows the matter.Mr. Terry's writing style makes the things easy to understand and easy to follow. I want to tanks Mr.Terry for sharing his knowledge with us.

What our customer's say!
"Not so helpful for beginners", I'll preface this by saying I come from a print production background with heavy experience in Quark, InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. So with a lot of time spent in the Adobe interface, I was expecting pretty smooth sailing going into Designer. Not so, however. Having to get up to speed quickly and build some multi-page forms (with a lot of tables that would include interactive content) turned out to be quite a chore in Designer, at least initially.
I was hoping I could use this book as a reference when I hit a point I was stuck on. Sometimes this worked but frequently there wasn't much in the way of specifics on the basics of getting Designer to do things. For example, there's only 3 pages devoted to tables, and building long forms with a lot of tables was something I seriously needed to get done. It didn't help that the Designer interface in Windows seemed a bit clunky and awkward, as I find the Mac much better suited for any kind of close precision layout.
That said, there's some very good info here in terms of the overall capabilities of the program, along with some helpful insight on the overall strategy of form building. I suspect when I get to an intermediate skill level after some time in the program this book will likely be a very good reference to get to the next level.
In short, this is more of "big picture" overview of Designer that'll likely be quite useful to user that already knows their way around the program, but if you're starting cold as a new user you may want to look elsewhere.
"Great handbook and desk reference. Up and running in one day.", What Rex Parker is to NYT crossword fans, JP Terry is to LiveCycle newbies. A guidepost, a guru, a computer savvy friend who won't make you buy a case of beer every time you need advice.
The book was so approachable, I read it in its entirety over lunch. It generally made sense even without following every example line by line on my pc (no small feat for an IT guide). Mr. Terry nicely toes the line between giving enough background to accomplish the task, and not giving so much that new users are overwhelmed.
I especially appreciated the tips on form design, which show that Terry hasn't forsaken form for function. A rarity in IT writers, but a crucial aspect for success in real world situations.
Overall, an excellent handbook for new users trying to puzzle their way through LiveCycle as well as a great desk reference for experienced users.
In the future, I'd love to see a Mr. Terry do a companion book that delves deeper in to JavaScript focused on LiveCycle Designer.
"Not good enough.", One of the main things that should make this book powerful is the ability to understand how to create a form, and connect it with information from our company database. The book does not address this well and neglects from the outset to advise the reader that if this is the reader's goal, then a complete understand of Javascript is necessary. Otherwise, you'd be wasting your time trying to create such a form.
I felt that after reading 4 of 6 chapters, the author ignorantly writes, "Now that you are a scripting expert...(Page #178)." How could such a statement be written to insinuate that one chapter can make you a programmer? The idea verges on mocking the reader's intelligence.
The book tries valiantly however, and with reasonable success, to explain the features and how to use them. But it is not written for a beginner and is not concise at times while the author uses terms and concepts that are not thoroughly explained.
I wish the book would get more into how to control and integrate the data that a user can select and input. On the other hand, this was not accomplished well, and unfortunately, you better know how to program in Javascript if you want to accomplish these high level features.
"Good LiveCycle Start", I found this book to be a very broad coverage of what LiveCycle can do for you. It is complete, in that it covers all relavant topics. My only wish is that it went deaper into some of the more essoteric functions available in LiveCycle.
"Great Adobe LiveCycle Book", This book tells you everything you need to know to get started creating dynamic forms with Adobe LiveCycle Designer. And it tells it in a concise, succinct, and easy-to-read manner.

"Just what I've been looking for!!", Received my book yesterday. My only regret -- I have to go to Italy next week and I won't be able to put some of the excellent information to immediate use. This is just the book I've been looking for. Mr. Terry is generous with his knowledge and presents examples and lists other reference sources which are beneficial.
"Awesome Book!!", This is the book that should have been included with Adobe LiveCycle Designer! It takes you step-by-step through the process of designing a and creating an interactive form and explains how to add scripts using both Adobe's Form Calc and JavaScript. First it goes through an overview of the software interface and explains the differences between different form types. Chapter 2 provides a discussion of basic design concepts and considerations for making forms readable and user-friendly. Don't skip that chapter - there's lots of great suggestions there! Next the book shows you how to create a form and incorporate all the built-in objects and tools like fill-in fields, menus, and buttons. There's also a section explaining master pages, body pages and most importantly sub-forms which are the real key to getting the most out of the software. Chapter 4 has all the basics for adding functionality with JavaScript and Form Calc. The explanation here is very straightforward and easy to follow, especially for a non-computer person like me. There are tons of examples in the text and Mr. Terry has provided a link to download all the forms he created and discusses, including several examples linked to xml data files that you can use as a starting place to make your own. In chapter 5, he shows you how to use the forms to enter and collect data, including very understandable examples of what should happen when you take various actions. Finally, the last chapter provides sample scripts for common tasks and explains how and why they work. Use this book as a workbook - go through the examples and sample files and you will be well on your way to creating very useful and functional forms. I tried using the tutorials that came with the software, but felt like I had only scratched the surface of knowing how to use LiveCycle Designer. This book filled an essential gap in my knowledge. I find a lot of computer books virtually incomprehensible, but Mr. Terry's writing style makes this book very easy to read and use. Never thought I could get excited about making a form, but the software is really pretty cool and this book helped me find that out. Highly recommended!!!
