"The book to have for Cocoa Development" Excellent book and reference for developing on the Mac. Note that this is NOT for someone looking to learn Objective-C, but rather someone looking to learn the ins/outs of the Cocoa Frameworks and development process with XCode 3.
My only wish is that they include some iPhone specific sections in the next edition.
"Gives good directions, but ......." This book gives good directions to learn the Cocoa programming. However, it seems that this is another round of edition based on the previous one. The book constantly refers to the NIB file of the project being worked on, which was the old form of the current XIB file. It is a subtle thing but confusing enough to those who have never done Cocoa programming before. This sounds negative, but overall, the book gives good guidance to experienced programmers, (not necessarily in Objective-C.) I am now on Chapter 7, and getting accustomed to the quality level of the book. The book has Challenge questions in many of the chapters, and I advise everyone to work on them. The book is no way in text-book quality, but there are not many competing books in the market. I have given 4 starts indicating that the book is not bad but it leaves plenty rooms for improvements.
"Printed upside down! Good book if I flip it over." I just got the book a few days ago so i have not done much reading in it yet but i have to comment on one major flaw with my copy. The entire book was printed upside down. So when you open the book up with the cover right side up the first page is actually the last page upside down. I have never received a book like this before. My girlfriend laughed when she saw me reading my book upside down. It looks like i am pretending to read it or something. I am sure I will get many strange looks when reading this at the local coffee shop or any where in public. O well, its not worth sending back I guess. Otherwise the book appears to be a good book but time will tell as i get to read it more. It feels so strange to flip it over to the back upside down before opening. I wonder if any one else will get any of these freak copies.
"A must have." This book is excellent. The explanations are short and very clear. The author makes cocoa really easy to learn, step by step. There are good and instructive exercices he calls challenges. You can really get to work right after reading this book and completing the so called challenges. And it will certainly be a handy reference book. A must have.
"Great Book" Great book that beginners and experts alike can gain valuable knowledge from. Though you really need to know a little bit about Java or C so that you have a little background on programming so you will have something to compare it to Cocoa programming.

What our customer's say!
"Great Book, even better Class", This book is by-far the best book for learning Cocoa Programming and understanding why you doing what you are. The book is based on Aaron's years of working with and teaching Cocoa programming at NeXT, Apple and his company Big Nerd Ranch. Aaron keep's the book moving with small logically laid out chapters and leave out the superfluous B.S. that so many other authors insist on writing for days on. In my opinion Aaron's book isn't really intended for people with no object-oriented programming experience but if you have a decent amount of experience in a HL language such as C or Pascal you shouldn't have much of a problem picking up on the concepts. I would suggest reading an object-c book prior to working with this book only because object-c's syntax and library leaves some people scratching their heads. The only thing better than reading this book is taking Aarons 5 or 7 day Cocoa Boot camps from his company Big Nerd Ranch ( www.bignerdranch.com ). Both the book and the boot camps are money well spent.
"C# ASP.NET Developer Learning XCode", I currently am a Web App Developer who uses C# and Visual Studio. I have been using macs forever and wanted to learn how to code for the iPhone and figured this is the best place to start learning Objective-C. This book is very good at explaining Objective-C and how to write code for it. I am at the eighth chapter and already am writing my own code. I downloaded the examples in the book and the way I approach it is, read the chapter, copy the example code (not from the clipboard!) then read the chapter again. The book has a bunch of great examples and is fun to do. I look forward to writing native mac apps!
"The Cocoa Bible", This book is amazing. It covers everything you need to know, in depth, very easy to read and understand, and very quick to digest. It is THE Cocoa Bible.
"OS X developer must have", If you plan to write for Mac OS X, and have some programming experience, this book is a MUST HAVE. This is by far the best introductory book I have ever read on any language.
If you DO NOT have programming experience, I would still recommend this book. There are some spots where the logic might be hard to grasp, but Aaron Hillegass walks you through it.
In either case, but more so for beginners, I would also recommend Programming in Objective-C (Developer's Library). The less experience you have, the more strongly I would suggest reading this book first. It will walk you through the basics of straight Objective-C and then start you off using frameworks in OS X. If you are a Windows user and do not have a Mac, Programming in Objective-C (Developer's Library) will show you how to write and compile Objective-C in Windows. (Look for the new version of this book which uses Objective-C 2.0)
I come from Windows development, having programmed in VB 6, VB.NET, C (and variants), and java. Aaron Hillegass takes you right into the heart of the Mac OS X development environment and gives you a guided tour. Showing you the basics of both Cocoa and the X Code development environment. Pick the book up and you won't regret it. This is a walkthrough tutorial style book. It is not a reference book. Apples online documentation is the best reference for Cocoa.
There are a lot of resources out there for Cocoa programmers. If you are looking for more help with Cocoa, check out the free podcasts that are available on iTunes. "CocoaCast" is a 'screen cast' that actually follows this book and may help you if you have trouble. Other podcasts that i find easy to listen to come from the Mac Developer Network such as "Late Night Cocoa" and "The Mac Developer Roundtable". They also have a great community that you can join by visiting www.mac-developer-network.com. They have video classes on some great topics which are very helpful.
"Great Objective-C & Cococa resource", Through this book you get a good introduction to Objective-C as you delve into Cocoa. At first, I was worried that I would need a supplemental Objective-C book to understand the concepts, but this was not the case. The examples and explanations are sufficient and can stand by themselves without need of other materials or knowledge.
Sometimes as I'd read through the chapters, I'd have questions about certain concepts that seemed to be glossed over. Yet, as the author will state, keep reading. Normally the concepts will be explained in full, within a few pages.

"Best book for programming on Mac OSX", It's the best book i know for programming on Mac OSX !
Thanks from Berlin Germany !
"Great reference for potential Cocoa developers!", Honestly, I was quite apprehensive because I'm a newbie to programming, with just a passing knowledge of Objective-C (gained from online resources). However, after going through 80% of the book (and looking forward to the next few chapters), I can say that this is definitely a great resource for any beginner who wants to learn how to write Cocoa programs. At the same time, concepts which I first found difficult to comprehend in Apple's online documentation became much easier to understand after they were discussed in the book.
IMHO, anyone interested to become a Mac developer should read this amazing book + Apple's great online documentation. I guess the only way to improve it would be to include sections on iPhone development for the 4th edition. Thanks for a great book Mr. Hillegass, and for making Cocoa fun to learn! =)
"This truly is the "Cocoa Bible"", The author is probably the only professional Cocoa instructor, and if not the only, at least the one that's been so the longest. As such, his book is absolutely amazing. The instruction takes you through everything you need to know to start writing your own Cocoa applications. The pace in which he introduces topics is just right. It's structured to make you question things, then he immediately answers any question you might have had. And by the end of the book, you're also taught how to teach yourself anything else you may find yourself needing to know about the Cocoa frameworks. The beginning of the book is also a great crash course in Objective-C, that is, if you already know another OO-language. This gets my highest review, a first for an instructional material.
"Excellent introduction to cocoa and native mac programming", A great book to get used to mac programming using ObjC and cocoa. A building stone before being thrown in the forums and other dedicated sites (including exhaustive Apple documentation).
Really a great book when you aim to develop applications on the mac platform. Of course this book is not perfect (too short probably, some part should be developped, ...) but remains nonetheless the best book (and the only one updated for MacOS 10.5) on the subject available to date.
"Experiences programmer quicklies learns Cocoa using this book....", I've been programming for over 15 years and I wanted to start programming for both the MacOS and iPhone so I needed a good starting point. I've read a few others books on this subject but I was eagerly awaiting the release of this edition(3rd) for the updated sections on XCode and Objective-C 2.0. Definatly the best book on the subject. If you want to learn mac programming and iphone programming(pretty similar) this book will get you started. The one major thing I didn't like(personally but it might help others) was the fact that the same app was used for the second half of the book, I usually don't like when authors do that because it makes it impossible to jump around the book.
Who this book is for: - People who understand the fundamentals of programming. - People who want to start programming on the MacOS or iPhoneOS. - People with zero or very little experience with Mac programming
Who this book is NOT for: - People without any programming experience. The book does not explain what an array is or how memory works;both of which are needed if you're going to be a serious programmer. If you want to start programming on the Mac get a 'C' basics book first to get the fundamentals down first. - People with Mac experience might find this book slow all though it does offer new stuff it's bloated with "Begginer" info.
