"Final Cut Pro 5", I am a beginner to editing video. This text is easy for me to understand and gives

"for final cut pro beginners", very useful, pretty easy to read. would they consider publishing a smaller version for all the commands only?

"Good tool for learning", Book is very comprehensive, covers topics in depth and allows the reader to work through projects. Final Cut is quite a program, and to try to learn about it on your own would be a challange, this book bridges the gap.
Not once could I complete the project tasks in the estimated time given, i.e. 1 hour, I don't know if I am the only one who can't pick it up as quick as the book says, for me personally the concept of completing the book in the time stated is unrealistic, nevertheless I got it eventually and now have a much broader understanding of the program, so in this sense I found it useful and it has fulfilled it's purpose as a learning tool.

"Excellent source of information", I am new at editing having only used Final Cut Pro for very basic and simple editing. This book is superb for beginners who wish to take their skills up a notch with plenty of tidbits for experimentation. I recommend beginners to have a copy of this book in their library if only for referrence.

"A+ for the new user", This book is very good in taking you step by step from begining to end in the usage of this product. Final Cut is a very dynamic program and this book will insure that you see all of the nuances of a very powerful tool.

"Solid teaching tool", Having used NLE software quite a lot over the years and having just made the transition to FCP, I thought a book would be handy as I am self taught and thought there would be faster ways of doing what I already knew. I was right! This book is very handy both as a reference and a learning tool. Some of the chapters are irrelevant to me due to my previous experience but the way it explains the four or so different ways to achieve the same results is very clear. As I'm currently working on my own projects I haven't used the projects provided with the book, but the examples are useful and cover most issues I have so far experienced in FCP. For somebody just beginning with FCP this would be an excellent book. Even for people with reasonable knowledge like myself it is invaluable. My major criticism of it is it leaves out the 'why' of things (why do it this way) a bit too much. However, I usually find the 'why' becomes apparent after a bit of use. A good book that will give you solid grounding, not just in FCP but NLE as a whole

"Exactly what it says it is", I've only been using final cut pro for about 8 months now, and in the last few weeks using this book I have learned almost as much as the 7 1/2 months before that. The book is exactly what it says it is: a fcp training book. Just follow each exercise one at a time, and you won't be disappointed.

I feel I should comment on what a few other reviewers said though. First, to the reviewer who said something like "Ok if you like computer manuals", that's just wrong. This is nothing like a technical manual. I have a few of those for fcp, and when you use those you really need to know what you're looking for before you can find it. Not the ideal situation when you're new to fcp. And as a matter of fact, this book even says that it is not meant to be used as a reference manual. Instead, it's the fcp training, but self paced.

For the user who said it might not be that good if you don't have the time, well, learning fcp is a major undertaking, and one way or another you have to serve your time to really learn the tool. So yeah, you'll spend time with this book. But the great thing is that every lesson starts with a time estimate (usually around an hour). If you ask me that's better than just wading through endless information. Put everything else aside, and focus on the exercise for an hour or so.

One last thing, I really love how each exercise builds on the shortcuts used in the previous exercises. I'm a hardcore keyboard shortcut user in every program I use, and this book is really helping me to nail those down for fcp.

I'll definitely move on to the next apple fcp training book that follows this one.

"Teach Yourself, YES! You Can Do It!", I took a Jr. College Class on Final Cut Pro 5 and this was the textbook. The teacher would lecture for an hour and the rest of the time, we worked through the lessons in the book. At the end of the class, we were all able to produce our own short videos. This book is very step-by-step and to be honest, I think that I got more out of going through the lessons than listening to the teacher. I suggest Rick Young's "The Focal Easy Guide to Final Cut Pro 5 for new users and professionals" as a companion book. They both say the same thing, but in different ways. The lessons took me a little longer than the time indicated in each lesson frontpiece, but I sure learned a whole lot about making movies and FCP!

"Excelent, comprehensive, straightforward", Very powerful hands-on learning tool when combined with the enclosed DVD. Covers all the functions of Final Cut Pro and allows you to neatly learn hands-on.
