"Set Your Voice Free"
Threw out my whole life I've always wanted to sing and I thought it took "Years of practice to sing".I have been using this book for a month and Im already on the process to singing, I already found my middel voice and I can actually hold a tune singing from going up and down clearly and GOOD!!

This book by Roger Love is incredible, just about a month ago I was tone deaf and I sounded so so so so bad at the beginning of this book and now I listen to myself, its like I stepped threw another time portal and Im a whole new person.Roger Love gives you great breathing Excerices, gives you confidence no matter what and never puts you down always incourgaes you, gives great vocal excercises and most of all tips that would cost you thousands.

This book is incredible and its worth every cent and trust me, before starting vocal lessons and spending an arm and a leg, first buy this to find your voice and you can do it at you own paste and PRIVATLY till you feel comfortable to take lessons.

"It Does Help"
The few lessons on the included cd are worth having and really help to both get a better feel for singing more naturally and work great as a warm-up for practice, recording or shows.

"Handle with care! Please!"
I am dismayed by reading all of the praise for this book! Coming from the perspective of a voice teacher and professional vocalist, I am concerned at the number of people following blindly into the potentially damaging advice in the book. I have an old one from 1999, along with instruction CD's, and Love demonstrates his glottal action (which is the technical term for his "gluggs" that he tells you to do). I think I rated as low as I did simply to attempt to lower the overall rating and get people to pay attention to the potential danger.

It is true that glottle action helps to develop a more forward voice, and that is why songs with glotal emphasis can be valuable. However, to spend as much time doing these exercises as Lov recommends, can cause permanent damage. As the vocal folds are repeatedly slapped against one another, the abrasion will quickly cause fatigue and irritation within the vocal apparatus, particularily the delicate vocal folds. Over time, your skin will become calloused and you will not feel the abraision anymore, but that's only because of the long-term damage that has occurred.

Rather than this, I recommend The Vocal Coach by Chris & Carol Beaty (published by Star Song). They have a wide range of instructional tools, and a phenominal daily workout series for all voice types.

"Great Book"
This book is incredible. I had no idea I ever had the potential to improve my speaking voice. I do the exercises almost every night, and can see serious results in my singing voice. I'm now working on incorporating the singing voice into my every day speech (they are really one and the same), and feel much more optimistic about using the incredible instrument of my voice to get my message across to people in a much more efficient and pleasant way in the future.

Thank you, Roger Love.

"Very informative"
I am a music director at a local church resposible for teaching vocals. I can not sing, but because of the information in this book I can teach and instruct the vocalist. This book is a must if you want to teach correct breathing control and diaphramic breathing.

"Best of its class", I've been through a number of these vocal courses by book and this is definitely one of the best. He gives you really practical exercises throughout, including very task specific ones like finding middle voice, eliminating particular vocal problems or replicating the expressiveness of song in your speaking voice. I've been through a number of those courses that basically just have you singing "aaah" scales up and down and this is definitely beyond that level.

I haven't actually started practicing with them, so I don't know what the long term results would be. After going through more than a couple of these lame courses I have taken to reading the book through first and just testing the exercises before dedicating any significant time to them. I'm definitely going to put these through their paces.

"Out of date information. Be careful with this one", I bought this book second hand. It is full of the sort of out of date information that I sort of expected from the welter of self publication that surrounds it.

There has been an extraordinary amount of voice research published in the last 25 years, and that which does not support the central premisis of this book doesn't surface in the text.

The vocal folds simply do not zip up to provide pitch transitions. I have asked the authors for a reference to stroboscopic evidence of the zipping of the folds and I never got an answer. This is because the vocal folds don't zip up. They elongate to produce higher pitches.

And what is more, the larynx rises with pitch change. It's a natural response to the the pitch - just try it yourself. Put your hand around your throat and say mmmmmm moving the pitch up and down and feel the movement that has happened in your larynx since birth.

Read about it these and other voice issues on the NATS website where there are lots of informed articles on voice. You may decide you want something a bit less personality centred and rather more accurate.

"If I can do it, so can you, and it's so incredibly cool!", I'm 45 and recently decided to pick up my guitar again and start performing solo after a 15 year break. I never was much of a singer - always strained my voice on the few songs I'd sing with the band - but now, going solo, I really needed to start over and learn good vocal technique.

I'm glad I'm not a quitter, because after 4 months of frustrating voice classes, I quit and looked for another perspective. I found Roger Love's book at my city library with the CD for hearing examples of what he's talking about in the book.

Roger explains the concept of your "middle" voice with regard to how it manifests itself physically - something no-one in all of my years of helpful hints or even voice classes ever mentioned. Roger gave me a tangible idea I could focus upon.

I had heard once that most popular music was sang in your "falsetto" or "head voice", but could never understand how people were able to get the full vocal sounds they got doing that. Roger gave me valuable insight into this ability with both words and audio tracks and corrected misconceptions I had from listening to, well, everyone else.

Roger gave wonderful helpful advice and stories of other students who'd had the same difficulty I was having, saying "don't give up, your middle voice is in there somewhere". After two weeks of not giving up, I just found my middle voice. It's so incredibly liberating. I see the light at the end of the tunnel. I think I'll be able to do those songs I wanted to do but couldn't because they were out of my range.

I wish I could write Roger and thank him personally for getting me past this hurdle. If you want to sing well and are having conceptual difficulties like I was, you simply must read this book. Maybe your friends or your voice coach will cover this material without it, but mine sure didn't, and it made all the difference.

"L-O-V-E This Book!", SET YOUR VOICE FREE... is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to learn how to improve their voice. Whether you want to sing or speak better, author Roger Love will show you how to get there.

Ok so you might not become the next Sinatra or Streisand, but the book does explain how your vocal cords make sounds, how to practice, and how to breathe properly. The book never gets too technical or boring, so it's easy to understand.

The book comes with an instructional cd that's over one hour long. On it, Love demonstrates what the various types of voices--like nasal-gravel-breathy etc. that he describes in the book--sound like. He also provides examples of what chest, middle, and head voice sound like and vocal excercises for both male and female voices.

It's almost like having an instructor there with you. I can't tell you how helpful the cd is. Love also provides examples and two excercises that will help you, almost instantly, identify what true vibrato feels and sounds like and helps you create it.

There's also a brief section in the back of the book that provides Q & A with people who work in the music business for those who want to pursue a professional singing career.

I don't want to be a singer, I just wanted to be able to carry a tune because I love singing. And SET YOUR VOICE FREE... has helped me do just that. I may not sound like Josh Groban and I still have trouble getting to middle voice, but my voice has become clearer and stronger.

"Great book!", This book is one of the best vocal exercise book's I've read. It is very practical and explains everything clearly. Roger Love does a great job of 'demystifying' the voice and how to get it to work for you. The vocal exercise CD that is included is invaluable. If you want a strong middle singing voice, or a great speaking voice, this book is for you.

"The bible of pop singing", Play the included CD in your car for the next 3 months and sing along. If after those exercises you don't have good voice control, you're doing something wrong because the exercises DO put you in the proper position for maximum flow and you eventually develop a continuous, steady, vocal pressure.

I had to learn sing with a jazz band a year ago , and without this book and CD I would have been lost. There are lots of people who will give you their opinion as to the proper way to sing, but few who know the mechanics behind it.

Though the book has a bit of hype related to the name-dropping, it is nonetheless an excellent text on how to sing pop music, properly.

Would have liked some guidance on how to sing properly with microphones as I found that the next problem one faces in pop music

"Review of Set Your Voice Free", I found it to very helpful, although as a "Basso Profundo" I found it difficult at times "Setting my voice free" in the higher head tones.

"The exercises are great", Within a few weeks of starting the exercises on the CD and practicing them daily, I went back to my voice teacher and she said, "I don't know what you've been doing, but your voice sounds amazing."

My one gripe is... Mr. Love periodically sings along with random parts of the exercise and it's distracting, especially if you have memorized them. You want to be able to focus on your own voice, not Mr. Love's!

The book is highly readable and inspiring.

"NO book is as good as this one pretends to be.", I'm one of those guys that only sings in the shower or his car, so this was my first foray into singing for real. The thought of removing vocal defects and bringing forth my "true" voice was simply awe-inspiring, and for several months I was serious about practicing the material every day.

I mastered the breathing exercises, and can "slow leak" (make a hissing sound for as long as possible) for roughly 45 seconds without difficulty. I can match his pitch on all but the highest parts of the exercises, and I have a fuller chest voice now. I don't claim to have "finished" the material, by any means, but there has been some progress.

So I'm thinking that if I'm able to hit the higher notes (I loves me some Coldplay), then everything's good. Right? As far as this book teaches, if you can follow the piano, then it's all you'll ever need to do, and that's patently false. It doesn't emphasize the nuances of supporting your singing with proper breathing, only says that it should be effortless. When I take a moment to hear myself singing, I notice the range is wider, but the sound (whether it be my tone, sustain, or something else) is still unpleasant, and this book has no remedy for that.

Roger goes into great detail about the types of vocal defects, like the brassy, gravelly, airy, or nasal voices, and delves into how they're created and fixed... but I don't have any of those. He talks about how to add more color to your speaking voice, so that you don't sound so monotonous... but I don't need help there.

Essentially, he covers more bases than most voice books, but for people who just want to know how to sing pleasantly, his techniques are lacking. Out of 30 tracks on the CD, I probably listened to three, which were the exercises themselves. The rest of it (including a primer on rhythm that involves clapping on beats one and two) was less than useful, and felt like filler.

Roger also spends an ample amount of time using anecdotes that involve famous people to convince you that he's going to change your life (not just your voice!). By all the testimonials from quoted singers and actors, you'd think that this was the most popular guy in the vocal training business. Quite frankly, I could have done without most of the self-touting.

As others have mentioned, his "understanding" of anatomy is also flawed. So if you skip those parts, and you skip the self-touting, and you skip the "fixing defects," and you skip the motivational speaker stuff, then you wind up with a text that provides a few breathing and vocal exercises, and little else.

In short, if you really want to learn to sing (and not all that other stuff) from a book/CD, then this package doesn't fully deliver because it wastes too much content on irrelevant topics.

"Good, but not enough.", It does give you some hints, but it isn't that technical. It's more an "imitate me" book than a "understand it" book. To me it wasn't very illustrative...

The exercises are a little bit ridiculous, so it's kind of hard to try to practice if you don't want to bother any nearby person or neighbor, or if you get easily embarrassed.

Right now I'm reading "The New Voice: How to Sing and Speak properly" and it seems more reasonable, it talks about making your voice before singing, instead of making it as you sing... like in this book.

I will give it a 2, because it does help you improve, but this book doesn't cover the "understand everything that is happening" part good enough for me.
