"my evaluation" Reading and rereading the works on Greek grammar has been somewhat of a career for me since 1992. I first read Wallace's book in 1996-97. I have previously read at that time Robertson's large and short grammar through as well as the works of Blass, Nida and Louw, Dana and Mantey, Black, Burton and was soon to add Perschbacher and Young's work's. I have since read Wallaces's work an additional 7 times through. My copy is heavily marked and worn out. I have reread Robertson's big grammar through 4 more times as well as the other major works and have my view of Biblical Greek shaped from these great scholars who taught through their pubished works. I am very familiar with Wallace's Greek Grammar, Beyond the basics and find it one of the finest. He charted new territory in the area of the genitive case. He has brought a clear logic to the hotly debated arguement of the temporal aspect to the indicative based tenses. He argued for the traditional view with some needed modification. He also broght out some great information on the conditional clauses and the function of verbal aspect in the imperative mood. Wallace leans a little more on Blass though he does appeal to Robertson (in my opinion he does not give Robertson the credit for the source of his information as well as he should). I have to say of all the grammars that I have read I find Wallace's work on the par with Robertson. I highly reccomend that one read this book through sevral times. This book is very logical, has a keen linguistic approach, and is very level headed. There has been so much misuse of Greek grammar (not by the grammarians themeselves who's works I sighted but from commentaries that refer to the Greek) but Wallace brings sholarship and good sense to the understanding of NT Greek.
"SLAM DUNK" i dont even know why i am writing this review. it is totally obvious that this is a great product. i got this as a gift for someone going for their mdiv. after 1 year and 2 months into its usage, i am STILL getting praises about the gift.
"its so helpful" "its saved me a ton of time" "its so easy to use"
list goes on and on...
also for those of you that think this is some savy software that is difficult to navigate... the receipient of my gift was in his mid 60's, and he DID NOT have any problems navigating and using this software. its pretty intuitive.
Best to you all PTL
"Excellent second-level textbook of Greek grammar" This text is required for our second-year course on New Testament Greek. I have to say I find it an excellent text both for reference and for working through systematically. The book is hardback, 827 pages altogether. The author is prof of NT studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. After an extensive 31-page Introduction section, the meat of the book is a detailed discussion of Greek Syntax. The chapters cover in detail all the cases, the article, adjectives, pronouns, prepositions; Verbs - person, number, voice, mood and tense, infinitives and participles; clauses, conjunctions, conditional sentences and volitional clauses. At the back there are detailed syntax summaries for each chapter in the book, a subject index, a greek word index, and a scripture index. The book started its life as a set of lecture notes for the author's third semester Syntax course at Dallas, and this history is apparent in the text itself. The feel I get from this book is that the author has been teaching the subject for hundreds of years. The student beginning a study of syntax may prefer to ignore the small print and footnotes, whereas more seasoned students will appreciate the exhaustive treatment of each grammatical concept. each topic is explained with reference to particular examples in the NT. This feature when combined with the Scripture index will make it very helpful for preachers who wish to apply an appreciation of the original language in their sermons. The book is designed to explain syntax, and therefore assumes the student already knows how the various forms are constructed. Therefore there are no tables of verb conjugations or of morphology. I really like this book. The author has a rather dry sense of humour which comes through in some of his descriptions. i particularly like his description of the 'Aporetic' genitive as the 'I am at a loss' (aporeo) to know what else to call this!
"It's a useful tool!" As is typical of biblical language grammars, some of the terminology found in Wallace does not reflect the jargon found in other grammars. However, his thorough indices are plus!
"Portable Wallace" For those who use this classic grammar for reference, having Wallace available on CD is a welcome alternative to lugging around the 800 plus page hard cover text. Although I travel frequently, with this CD, I can still teach Greek over the internet and do exegetical studies for sermon preperation. Add the CD version of BDAG's lexicon, NA27 Greek NT CD, pack the laptop and leave the library at home.

What our customer's say!
"Good materials", This book arrived in a timely manner and was in good shape--exactly what we expected.
"Review of Wallace's Greek Grammar - Beyond the Basics", This has been a most helpful volume to me already; it is clearly done and not too advanced for a middle student of the language. If I have any criticism I would say that the index could be just a little more complete, but it is not bad. I find myself using the volume often with satisfaction. My background is engineering so I am unfamiliar with some of the literary vocabulary, but usually Wallace takes the trouble to explain terminology and that is a big plus.
"Greek Grammar, Beyond the Basics", This textbook is an extremely comprehensive treatment of the Greek grammar beyond the basics. A basic knowledge of Biblical Greek is required to get the most out this text book. It is highly recommended for all who are studying Biblical Greek and desire to get beyond the grammatical categories to see the revelance of syntax for exegesis.
"After all these years ...", It has been 36 years since I graduated from seminary and, now retired, I am trying to relearn Koine. In reviewing the advances in our understanding of etymology and syntax, I realize that some of the older texts I spent scarce money on years ago are simply not up to speed. Wallace's Inter.> Advanced grammar is a truly great text. I used to consider a grammar to be a reference work; I'm reading this thing like a novel! I own Dana&Mantey, BDF, Moulton (Prolegomena), and Burton; this work includes virtually everything in the sum of the others. I have also just ordered the "holy grail" of grammars: AT Robertson. I am very anxious to compare them. Even this early in my 2nd life with Greek, I can see that this grammar is a must-have.
"Greek Grammar, Beyond the Basics by Daniel B. Wallace", I'm just finishing First Year Greek and find William Mounce's Basics Basics of Biblical Greek Grammar a real leap forward to the older beginning grammars. He gives adequate beginning definitions in that volume but gives regular references to the expanded treatments in Wallace's Intermediate Grammar Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics. Listed in a similar stye and expanding on Mounce's beginning treatments, it is the perfect segway into Intermediate or Second Year Greek. It also doubles as that USABLE reference that you will actually use on a regular basis as you are seeking to translate or resolve curiosities in the NT Greek text. Wallace really has forgotten more about Greek than most ever learn and we're all really glad he wrote it down! Great value, many improvements over older Grammars and lots of new research that ultimately makes the language easier to learn. Great service from Amazon and, again, I feel like I got great value.

"Grammar book", This grammar book was very helpful with my studies. Although the title claimed to be beyond the Basics, it was more organized and thus helpful to someone new to ancient Greek.
"inferior to older and cheaper works", I found this book very disappointing. It goes into much detail about minor points (uses of the vocative!) and ignores (idioms) or is light (prepositions) in others. I found it very unhelpful in unpacking difficult verses; passage after passage I looked up in the index only to find nothing of value. Here's the real point. After buying this book I read Young's Intermediate Greek and Zerwick's Biblical Greek and found they cover almost everything in Wallace, better, more interestingly and in fewer words. Wallace seems to simply repeat stuff said better and earlier. Zerwick's exegesis is a lot more compelling. Wallace does make a convincing case for the limits of grammar in exegesis, and it's nice that all his examples are fully translated and that his font is nice and big. But your time and money are better spent elswhere, the former of course in reading the actual Greek New Testament
"the best", This is the best I've come across for intermediate/advanced grammar. Wallace picks up where Mounce leaves off and takes you to BDF and beyond. The book is written for clarity and understanding, unlike the reference works of BDF, Robertson, Moullton, etc. These are written for the Greek scholar seeking support for techincal points. This is a great service to scholarship, but how do you get from entry greek to there? Wallace! He takes you carefully through the fine points of grammar, making notes on how to maintain distinction between, say, the gen of material and gen of content. He also gives you plenty of examples, some written out with notes, others simply cited. The samaller works of Black, Brooks-Winbery, etc are too short on explanation and examples. IMO, you can do no better than Wallace.
"Very helpful", Easy to unnderstand and very thorough. Very helpful for all serious Greek students.
"Thank you Dan!", Dr. Dan is a swell fella and he's penned a worth while text! If you are new to the study of NT Greek I would recommend William Mounce's 'Basics of Biblical Greek' along with the workbook. Studying the scriptures in their original languages will not always come easy to most, including me, but with diligent study you will be rewarded!
