"Great Book!"
I am a beginner at making music and this book has been extremely helpful. Detailed and clear instructions show the experience of the writer. Can be quite technical at times but better more than less information. Well worth the money!

"Comprehensive Manual to Dance Oriented Music - The only One You Will Ever Need."
I received my copy of this book from amazon.com today - probably the best book purchase (in terms of how to & reference) that I have ever came across. The book not only goes into depth about the various dance music styles, but also theory, MIDI, sampling & synthesis, processing, recording, mixing, promnotion and tools (to make the music).Keep in mind that this book is over 500 pages, so it has a tremendous amount of information; unlike the 150 to 200 page books of this ilk.

I am very impressed in how the terms while technical (if you are not well versed in it) are easy to follow and absorb. Even though I have a lot of the detail down to memory, I was more than happy to read what was there as a refresher.

There aren't many pictures in this book, which may or may not be of use to others, but they aren't really necessary in my opinion. Ido think that Chapter 20 - websites is too long and detailed since it is not the main focus of this book (consider it a bonus if you need the info).

All said, I five this book a 5 for content, breadth of topics covered, and ease of use. Essentially anyone from a beginner to a pro can find things in this title to be useful. This book and possibly a book on in depth recording (audio engineer's handbook) would be all you ever need in your music production library. You could also add a book on artists (in genere of your choice) for a complete set.

"An essential guide for any Sound Engineer"
I have a good knowledge already of how to engineer and produce tracks but this book taught me a thing or ten. Layed out in very logical chapters, it explains everything really clearly (simply but not simplistically) with great illustrations and examples.

I am about to buy another two copies of this book to give to friends. :o)

"Like sound design?"
Excellent book on sound design and engineering. It will also teach you Dance and House tricks! Do you have a stutter in your song? You should! This book teaches you how! Also, there is an indepth explanation on effects and mixing. You could even make up a snare drum from scratch using your LFO. An easy read if you are a sound engineer. There is a good section on HTML if you are especially interested in composing your own website. I recommend you having a Synth module (hard or soft) and an effects unit so you can apply the techniques in there. I liked the special chapter on the pro gear thats used in Dance music- a little outdated but thats due to the publishing date. If you are a musician put on your sound engineering and design helmet. Author is a professional and knows his stuff. I read it many times because once is not going to cut it! This is an indepth instructional manual. If you want to make Dance music this is a must! Please don't try to read it in one day...this is not a novel! Take your time and re-read and learn!

"Best kept secret for dance music production"
This book should have 6 stars, really. I have read this book 3 times, and still refer back to it. Covers every aspect of production in detail, from sound design, to composition, to arranging mixing and mastering.
Some of the tools he describes may be a little dated, but the techniques are still very valid.

What our customer's say!

"I should've got this book YEARS ago!", I've been working on breakbeat & trance for two years now after doing pop and rock for years in my 20s. I thought I knew quite a bit about electronica, but my 'knowledge' has always been like a mist in my head...there was always something wrong in either my tunes or the process.

I've heard so many good things about this book...to the extent that I thought it was all hype. Weeks ago I finally decided to give it a go. And wow...now the loose ends are really coming together. The author really understands and speaks from a producer point of view, in the case of dance music production, the producer needs to take control of the whole picture and therefore his way of integrating all aspects is nothing short of a great revelation.

I was gonna wait for the new edition, but decided to give this one a read first. And I'm glad I did. I wish I had this book years ago!

THere's a reviewer saying that this book is 'basic': well, it certainly isn't for "advanced electronica producers"---because these advanced dudes are most likely working on inspirations that hace to be felt and worked, rather than essential skills this book provides. Really...if you're so advanced, why are you still looking for a 'manual'?

If you do dance music, I whole heartedly recommend that you get a copy of this book.

"Excellent book.. except for....", Excellent book. Easy to read, and extensive to say the least.

Some things that disappointed me though (and they are minor): The examples of drum rhythms, bass lines, and basically constructing a track are brief.

Another thing I was disappointed with was that almost a quarter of the book was devoted to HTML and making an audio website. That was upsetting because I don't care to make websites. I care to make MUSIC!

I was also disappointed that the book picked a few sub-sub-genres to work composition/production examples from. I would have preferred the book focused more on how to make something that gets people onto the floor and DANCE.

I can see though, that without much knowledge at all about dance music production, this is a fantastic starting point and would get a reader up to speed to read the more in depth books on audio production specifics such as synth programming, drum programming, and software/hardware specific manuals.

I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who is a dance music hobbyist or just starting out with the dream of getting hearing your name backannounced on the radio when you drive home from work.... "Yep, that's my track."

Buy this book and the dream will be a LOT closer.

"The best for any level of electronic musicians!!!!!!!!!!!!!", This book has been more help than any other book that I have read on making electronic music!!!!! I recommend this as a must have for anyone starting out to seasoned vets of electronic music!!!!!!!

"The thing i have been looking for all these years.", This book is really quite a treasure. I highly recommend everyone interested in dance music production, or really electronic music in general get this book. For me, it seems like the thing i have been looking for on the internet for all this time. This book quickly jump starts you through the most basic knowledge if you happen to be a beginner, then it just blasts off into a comprehensive coverage of just about everything you might ever want to know. It tells you in depth about every effect, and guides you step by step on how to produce several variety's of the most popular dance sounds. One of the most impressive parts is that it contains about 100 pages about how to make the most prominent dance genres.

Overall the book is very comprehensive and written at the level of a college textbook. The theme of the book is generally, music theory and music production all in the light of dance music. Every other theory/songwriting book doesn't help you too much when you're trying to create dance music, and thats about all there is. this book is the only one ive covered which covers the electronica side of things. Amazing book.

"all producer and djs of electronic music.", im dj since 1990 and never see one book complete with this!!!!

best seller!!!

tks (sorry for me english)

Read this reviews before You buy...

"ooooh. a cookie cutter! what better way to pasteurize an already watered-down genre??", if you can't make music, there is no manual that will help achieve what you do not possess. there might be basic terminology defined in this book, but GOOD MUSIC CANNOT BE TAUGHT. sorry.

"true professional material for grownups", I first saw this thing about a year ago, and held off because of negative reviews. ignore that noise. this guy has remixed Underworld. the book isn't perfect, no book is, but it's thorough, deep, and excellent. the publisher is Elsevier/Morgan Kaufmann -- I have other books from them, top-notch professional materials on studio technique, and grad-school textbooks on artificial intelligence techniques. this is not some litany of obvious platitudes copped from an article some wannabe DJ wrote for "Remix" in between drug binges. this is the real thing. pretty much any relevant topic is covered. I have plenty of criticisms -- the section on web design seems totally superfluous, and there's a section on trip-hop but no section on drum and bass -- but overall, it's well worth the read.

"Comprehensive Guide to Electronic Music", I can't believe some of the reviews on here. I purchased this book about a year ago, and ever since then I've been using it as one of my main references. There are many detailed guides that you can find on the internet, but none which are so comprehensive and easy to read as this. There is no Holy Grail to writing music, but this comes damn close to being one.

This book covers every subject regarding electronic music production. Forget the name "Dance Music Manual" -- it covers hip hop and ambient, and is an overall guide to making music via electronic equipment in general.

From the first chapter, on music theory, Snoman guides you through sound synthesis, sampling, sound routing, effects, software vs. hardware arguments, reviews and analysis of basic equipment (modern equipment (!) like the Access Virus, and many popular plugins), electronic music genres, promotion, copyright laws, and basically everything you would want or need to know, with audio samples and recommended listening (very fun!).

I made the mistake of first giving everything a brief read-through; this book is just soaked with information. Be sure to have instruments in front of you and a lot of time to experiment if you want to fully understand everything Snoman is talking about. Snoman always emphasizes what is commonly used versus what can be experimented with, so he leaves the reader with knowledge of not only where to experiment from, but what to experiment with, and always stresses deviation from his standards as the key to pushing the boundaries of music genres.

Want good tips on programming a techno bass? House bass? Trance bass? It's in here. Want to learn how to build a 909 snare from scratch? An easy paragraph covers it.

Even his short but comprehensive analysis of electronic musical styles and history is a very interesting and good read.

If you're an expert at producing music, then you should buy this book. If you aren't an expert, then you NEED to buy this book. Forget all the Google searches, forum queries, and Sound on Sound free articles, and embark on Dance Music Manual 101 =)

"amazing in both content and style", I can't say enough about this book. The Dance Music Manual is really a great all-round electronica manual that is incredibly practical and detailed as well as broad and inclusive. It is extremely well written and has become one of those read again and again books. Especially if you are coming at music creation from semi-newbie status this will get you up to speed in no time. A must.

"great resource for beginging and intermediate producers", I've seen some other reviews complaining about this books music theory so here's the scoop.

Don't

-get this book if you are trying to learn music theory

-get this book if you think it'll magically give you a great idea for a song

Do

-get this book if you want to learn how to synthesize the sounds you want

-learn the vital tools and effects involved dance music production (i.e. compression, reverb, delay ect.)

In short, this is an awesome book and any serious producer of any genre NEEDS to know this material whether they get it from this book or not. I couldn't recommend this book more.
