"Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread!", This is a review for The Oxford-Hachette French/English Dictionary: Windows. CD-Rom.

I see that other older reviews are for the paper dictionary, but not this one. Anyhoo! I really get a kick out of using this. Its so handy to have the WHOLE 1945 page dictionary downloaded onto my PC desktop. {XP PRO} I also downloaded to my laptop which runs Vista and NO Problemo to report. Of course the best feature is the terrrifffic pronunciation of the software. The "Real Speak" feature allows you copy text form whatever website your on, be it a single sentence of a few paragraphs and click the button and a extremely well spoken lady repeats all the words back to you! Nothing even comes close to this state of the art software! Also you can write in your own words or phrases for playback or just look up individual words. Click one at a time or hold the shift key and right click for the whole sentence to be spoken.

And lastly let me tell ya once again! That this is the whole monster dictionary that is in hardcover at 1945 pages! The whole thing! I know I checked it out! So you only need one. For me, the talking dictionary is a no brainer! Salut!

"Second best (to the first edition)", I'm French and I have been living in the US for almost 15 years. About 10 years ago, I outgrew my pocket dictionary and started to look for something heftier. I did a thorough review of the few serious French-English dictionaries and finally went with the Oxford-Hachette. At the time, it was the only dictionary that was based on computer-generated corpuses originating from millions of pages copied from books, magazines and newspapers. It means that the editors saw every single word listed in all the possible ways. Result: I haven't found a single expression, as modern as it could be, that I haven't been able to translate in one way or the other. It's a perfect dictionary for the modern world, for expats who want to understand the movies, lyrics and modern language from the country they live in, whether they are a French-speaking person like me living in an English-speaking area, or - God forbid - an English-speaking person feeling at home in one of these oh-so-stinkin' but fascinating French-speaking countries.

I would have given 5 stars to the edition that I originally bought in 1997. I just bought the new edition in 2008 but the blue color that they used for the main titles is a bit annoying. It looks like the words are floating on top of the paper and it gives me some kind of headache. The dictionary is as good as it used to be but I realize that I don't spend as much time as I used to just browsing through it to learn new words. Result: 4 stars. Ok, 4 1/2 because it's second best only to the first edition...

Very well organized and structured. My classmates ask me for the dictionary during the class when they cannot find something in their dictionaries :)

It is a bit heavy though :)


"oxford french dictionary for windows", learning curve a little steep, but essential for those of us over 50 who need a dictionary with print large enough to read.

"Oxford: Invented 5-UP, and 6-UP - and then stopped.", This dicitionary is a great idea, a wonderful resource, and a great aid in the study of French. It could have been made more user friendly and not so, "qu'est que c'est?" - err, "crotchety." Still and all, it is well worth the price and a splendid asset in working with the language.

"Impressive, yet user-friendly", I was totally blown away by the detail in this book...it's huge!!! Yet, it's also very user-friendly. Most of the desfinitions that I, as a 12 year old could understand pretty well. Also,I remember playing with it one day and trying to find an English word that I knew that wasn't in any other book. I couldn't! While the size of this dictionary may intimidate some people, I highly recommend it as a home guide for anyone in middle-school up.

"A great dictionary: a good news to Japanese version Windows users", Opening the envelope, to my regret, I found a "NB" on the back side of the case. It says "Not compatible with Chinese or Japanese versions of Windows." It scared me.

I was wondering if I should return the mail without opening. But my curiosity was very strong.... and finally I found I could install the software without problems.

This dictionary is almost perfectly compatible with my Japanese version of Windows XP ( + sp2)!

I found it very easy to handle. Its start is very fast and it is very light and comfortable in using the dictionary.
No doubt this is a talking dictionary. The pronunciation is very natural. It is amazing. You will see when you have it.

All letters, even specific ones to French (some letters with accent marks) appear without problems except for service-type small windows of "usage note" and "verb table" (I am just talking of their list windows. Texts of usage note and Tables of conjugaison themselves are no problems. Accent letters appear perfectly there.) Anyway this is a negligible defect.
I wonder why Oxford UP is so much perfectionist as in saying "not compatible."

I am happy, because I did not return the post without opening and trying the software. My venture brought me a marvelous discovery.

There you find a very good news to Japanese version Windows Users!

"Learn to 'speak' french", I like to learn languages but my specialization is engineering; other reviewers can offer more in-depth reviews on the linguistic front. But i must say that i am totally impressed with the bundled 'speakFrench' software that is basically a French text-to-speech program. The biggest difficulty that English speakers have is with the French pronunciation and this pretty much solves it. Combine is cautiously with a good translation software and you can learn French in a considerably smaller time. This is well worth the money. No wonder i would like to try a similar product with Italian and Spanish in the future.

"Comprehensive", More definitions than you will ever need. Many examples so that you can understand how each word is used. The examples also bring out subtleties of meaning that should help you avoid making a fool of yourself. Many insets and extras. So thorough that you won't have to spend money on an army of books for conjugations, idioms etc. Don't get me wrong, this is not a complete stand-alone guide to the French language (who could lift it), but it is a damned good start.

Five stars means that I don't see how this could be any better.
