"Not for Beginners", This is an excellent book if you are a seasoned SCO admin. If you really want to get to the nitty gritty of how SCO works then this is the book for you . If you are new to Unix I would recommend the excellent Unix Administration Handbook , it gives a lot more generic sys admin direction .

"Save your money and save some frustration at the same time.", If you are new to Unix, or SCO in particular, this is not the book you want. It is exceedingly difficult to find clear examples and explanations, which is made all the more difficult by the fact that the index rarely matches what is actually in the book. There are plenty of in-depth, academic explanations of various system components (do you really care about how a video adapter sends a signal to the magnetic deflection yoke?) and humorous personal stories from the author, but there is a severe lack of explicitness on the basic functions. Just try to find out how to do something as simple as format a floppy diskette using this book! Also, from the prologue of the accompanying Configuration Guide all the way through the Companion manual, there are numerous typos, misspellings and plain old grammatical errors. This book appears not to have been edited at all. If you are already a Unix pro, you may find this book useful. If not, you may end up with an 800-page doorstop!
