"Vraiment francais"
Being a native speaker , I always have trouble finding a reader for my students that is without mistakes...This is it! Not only is it fun because of the topics but it is 100% accurate...what a thrill!

"Perfect for adult novices"
My friend and I are in our 50s and started studying French on our own several months ago. We wanted something we could each read during the week then get together over coffee to talk about, in French, of course. We tried several French magazines and Le Monde, but their level was beyond us...way beyond us. It was laughable. Easy French Reader is perfect. We read the little story, answer the questions, and have a conversation about the characters. New words are discreetly defined to the right of the text and there is a more thorough vocabulary section at the back. We will continue with the series when we finish this reader. I highly recommend Easy French Reader. Maybe next year we can handle Le Monde!

"Nice book for beginners"
I have been attempting to learn French on my own for the past year and have CD's for my car (wonderful) and have been buying dual language book after book, but finally realized they are way too advanced for me. This book is great because it's at the perfect not-a-complete-beginner but still-has-a-long-way-to-go level. There are exercises after each reading, a glossary & each reading has new words noted in the margin. Highly recommended.

"Good choice"
I took French for three years in high school and now - six or seven years later - I want to brush up on what I still remember. This was an excellent choice for me and allowed me to jump right in and start reading French again.
However, I think it would be difficult for someone who didn't have even a faint grasp of the language and so I wouldn't recommend this for the absolute beginners - just people like myself who are re-starting the language. If you want to do more than just read French, compliment this with another book that comes with a tape. I would also get a French-English dictionary. There's one in the back, but it is not as inclusive as it could be.

"Great supplemental to learning French"
This book is an easy way to add variety to your studies. I find the chapters are thoughtfully put together to help the beginner to keep focused on the language and new vocabulary, but have a bit of fun at the same time. I would recommend this book to keep the studies more enjoyable.

What our customer's say!

"Excellent Value - Accessible", This is an excellent self-teaching French language guide - and a good value for the price. The book is divided into three sections. The first section is a typical boy-girl 'let's learn about our two cultures' storyline. Nothing exciting here. But the second section is more interesting and consists of twenty-two short biographical and historical sketches (from Vercingetorix, Clovis, and Charlemagne through the two world wars and accounts of more recent figures like Estaing, Mitterand, and Chirac). These little essays are sufficiently interesting and accessible to almost make the reader forget that this is primarily a language learning effort. The third section offers four short stories by Daudet, Theuriet, Zola, and Maupassant. It's an excellent selection. There is real patriotic emotion in Daudet's 'La Derniere Classe' and the familiar, razor sharp irony of Maupassant's 'La Parure'. Throughout the Reader helpful vocabulary translations appear in the margins.

"Easy first dip into reading French", I found this book well organized and written as a first reader. The concepts were introduced in a carefully thought out fashion with progression from easy to difficult.

"Easy French Reader", I studied French for two years back in High School. It has been over 40 years since I have had any contact with French. This book is excellent for someone with a small amount of knowledge of the French language and is trying to rebuild their reading skills. There is a small dictionary in the back which helps with some of the words.

This book is laid out in such a way that you progress with each chapter. It is divided into three sections. The first section is simple french dialogue; the second section covers French figures in history and the third section has four short stories from well known french authors (Alphonse Daudet, Emile Zola, Andre Theuriet and Guy de Maupassant)

If you are looking for pronunciation assistance, this is not the book you want. If you are simply wanting to ease your way back into reading French. I highly recommend it.

"What a great book!", With very little French (what I got from a phrasebook on holiday for a couple of weeks), I bought this book and started reading it on the train to work. It was great. It has a good lexicon in the back, and as you progress most new words appear in the margin with a translation. It still takes effort, but is a great way to get your vocab and reading up and running. I am now reading it again, as my French improves, and it is still improving my vocab and comprehension.

It has been the best book I have had as a beginner learning French.

"My first French Reader - hit the mark", I am middle aged, poor at languages, and attempting to learn French. I have completed 50 hours of lessons that have mainly focussed on learning language fragments. With this book, everything started to click into place for me.

The book is in three sections, each progressively more difficult. I tried to read the whole book in one go and found the first section very accessible, the second section less so, and the third section impenetrable. It is a well graded book. The stories are engaging and designed to teach bits of French culture and history in addition to the French language. I have started reading the book a second time, and this time I am picking up more of nuances of the language. I will continue to use this book to supplement my formal learning, and when I am finished with it I know that my skills will have developed significantly.

Like others, I have found it annoying that not all the difficult words are included in the glossary/dictionary at the back. However, this book has helped me so much that I am willing to forgive this small point (that can be overcome with an accompanying dictionary) and give five stars.

"Easy French Reader", This book is just what I need! It has helped me with comprehension of French, and the style makes me want to keep reading it! A book like this was long overdue.

"GOOD FOR THE LEARNER", THIS BOOK IS A GREAT HELP TO ANYONE TRYING TO LEARN FRENCH, THE STORIES ARE SIMPLE AND YET A LITTLE COMPELLING ALSO. THE CONTENT IS REASONABLY DIVERSE GIVEN THE CONSTRAINTS OF THE READER AND THE EXPLANATIONS OF THE NUANCES AND FALSE FRIENDS ARE EXCELLENT.

"useful", Though a bit stuffier than its sequel, "Easy French Women," which Amazon is, for reasons that elude me, not offering.

"They're still publishing this? Nice!", Wow, I haven't even thought about this book since I started studying French with it when I was a little kid. I can't say I'm surprised it's still so popular - the book works.

What made this book so great was you're learning about French culture and history and literature through the language, so you're not just learning straight vocabulary. At the top of each section is a list of new words, and at the end are reading comprehension questions. In the beginning of the book, the lessons are extremely simple and geared toward the absolute beginner (the equivalent of things like: Christine is American. Charles is French. Christine has a little dog named Chou-Chou.).

As you progress, the sections become more involved, finally evolving from short skits involving fictional French and American students to short summaries about French history. Finally, you'll have actual short tales from French writers like Maupassant (whose "The Necklace" is still one of my favorite stories for its wicked humor). Through the progression of the textbook's three sections, the reading comprehension questions get progressively more advanced as well as the vocabulary.

All told, this is a great book for beginning to intermediate students. This book may be a little beneath advanced students, who would only find the last few stories to be at their level. In that case, I would recommend Wallace Fowlie's "French Stories/Contes francais" (a dual language book), which is a very nice compendium of Voltaire, Balzac, Gide and other great French writers and at a level appropriate for the advanced student.

It should be noted that, in addition to French history and culture, this book is about building up vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. That's it. If you're really serious about your French proficiency, you're going to need to apply yourself to learning grammar and conjugation, and those things are not covered in this text. So in conclusion, this is a great book, but it should just be a supplement to your learning arsenal.

Just a tip: a book that I STILL own, because it's the best French resource ever, is "The Ultimate French Verb Review and Practice" by David Stillman. Whereas already-conjugated verbs just appear in the Easy French Reader with no explanation, Stillman's book offers three-hundred pages covering every aspect of grammar, from the basics of conjugation all the way up to proverbs and figures of speech. Well-worth the investment.

"Great Read for Beginners", This is great for beginning French students like me. It starts out an easy read and slowly progresses to what I would guess is an intermediate to high intermediate level. With a French-English dictionary by my side, I plowed through it the first time and sailed through it the second time.
