Others say...
"A Must for All Intermediate and Advanced Students" I'm a grad student who teaches elementary German. Born and raised in the U.S., I learned German as a second language. I've exhausted the grammars I own, but I know that there are still many constructions and subtleties I've never learned. This has become more apparent as I've worked in a department filled with Muttersprachler.
The reviews for Hammer's grammar made it sound perfect for my needs. They were right on! This grammar is 550 pages of DETAILED explanations illustrated by many helpful examples. I've only just begun the first chapter (less than ten pages) and I've already learned invaluable information.
Did you know, for example, that the gender of 80% of all German nouns can be determined just by looking at the form and/or meaning of the noun? I knew of a dozen or so clues, but after working through these first pages I have learned many, many more and am much more confident with using nouns I know for which I've never memorized the article. Only 20% of nouns actually need to have their gender memorized. I'm now working through similar tips for determining the plurals, which are equally easy to determine just by looking at the noun - once you know how.
There is also a small section tucked away in a corner that explains how to determine whether one uses an, auf, in, zu, or nach as a preposition to indicate going "to" a location. I thought these also just had to each be memorized for each possible case. Nope, it's very logical and this book will explain it to you along with countless other details that will bring your German much closer to a native level (like whether to use genitive, "von", or apposition in measurement phrases).
Now, if this is nothing new to you, Hammer might still be helpful (though if your German is really great and you only have problems that natives have, you probably just need to work through the various volumes put out by Duden). I know I've never learned this stuff, and I certainly don't teach it in my college courses. Hammer's grammar is likely too much for beginners (a bit like drinking out of a fire hydrant), but its perfect for intermediate and advanced learners who have questions that have just never been answered by their textbooks or by the grad students who teach them.
Also, the workbook is the newest edition, matching the grammar, even though the image here on Amazon is from the older edition (at least at the time that I am writing this). It has excellent exercises, and I do recommend it. For rounding out your vocab, I recommend Cambridge UP's "Using German Vocabulary." It is far more exhaustive than the vocab books by Baron and others.
"Your first and last German grammar reference" I've been using Hammer's Grammar (3rd Ed. and now 4th) since I first began learning German and have never been disappointed. It's extremely thorough and provides crystal clear explanations of all points, though most beginners would probably find it to be a bit of information overload if they were trying to use this as their sole instructional text for grammar.
If you're studying German, you have to purchase this book; there's no debate. Even if you're a beginner and some of it might seem a little "too" detailed, you'll find yourself more and more glad that you have it there as your German improves.
"Dies ist DAS Buch!" I'm not the most knowledgeable person about other German grammar books in the market, but I can tell you that Hammer's German Grammar and Usage is all what it says it is, and still manages to exceed one's expectations.
If you are serious about commanding German Grammar and fascinated by its complexity, then you must get this book. It comprehends all the topics of grammar, including lots of nuances, as well as usage advice that will help you better communicate with German native speakers. Particularly useful are the chapters on the subjunctive, the word order and the cases.
I've read many not recommending this book to beginners, but I digress. If you begin learning a language from a reliable source, you will spare yourself from getting into bad habits and unwanted learning.
Wenn man Deutsch lernt, dann muss man es gut lernen wollen!
"Hammer's Outclasses all German grammar books!" I have been a student of German ever since I was a young boy. It was my grandmother's native tongue, and my father taught me some at home. I was in the U.S. Army, stationed in different areas of Germany during different European tours of duty throughout my military career.
I have always had problems with German grammar. I would now like to state that Hammer's German Grammar & Usage is by far the very best book anyone could possibly need for improving their German language skills.
It outclasses and outstrips books such as Routledge's "Modern German Grammar", and also "Handbuch zur Deutschen Grammatik" by miles. I found the Routledge grammar book to be way too technical in many aspects. The Handbuch zur Deutschen Grammatik did not give quite enough information on usage in my opinion.
Hammers is the very best bet when it comes to quality of information, quantity of examples, and most importantly EASE of use! I give this book 5 stars, and if I could personally shake hands with and personally thank the aurthors, I would!
In conclusion, I regard Hammers as the Summa Cum Laude of affordable German Grammar books.
"Can be fatal in the wrong hands!" This is by far the most comprehensive German grammar book on the market today. That is the same reason why it can also be problematic for many people to use; some aspects of German grammar are explained in unbelievably meticulous detail.
I am studying at a university in Germany so I am enrolled in intensive German courses every semester, and I actually failed my first final exam because I tried to use this book as my only reference. There is no way you can read this book from start to finish because it contains so much information that you are most likely to forget the majority of what you learned. I recommend that anyone who wants to learn German at a university level buy this book, but only as a secondary reference when the "main" textbook overlooks or poorly explains a grammatical concept. The index lists just about every aspect of German grammar is so well organized that I rarely need for than a few seconds to find the page that contains the clarification I am looking for.

What our customer's say!
"I can hardly believe how awesome this book is!", This book is seriously AMAZING. Any problem you can possibly imagine with grammar is included! Really glad I bought this, probably the best book on the subject I own. Highly recommended for any German student (I'm in my 3rd year).
"An excellent grammar, when used correctly.", As other reviewers have already emphasized, this is an excellent English language resource for German grammar. An incredible amount of detail is given, and attention is paid both to general rules and specific exceptions, even down to the most obscure and archaic. Both difficult and simple grammatical terms are explained through examples in English, which makes this book an excellent tool for coming to a deep understanding of the German language.
As mentioned by others, this is no book for beginners. Only high-intermediate and advanced students should look into using this grammar, as it assumes a rather high level of proficiency on the student's part. However, for more advanced students, the explanations and detailed examples are priceless, shedding light on even the most complicated German passages.
A word of caution to teachers: please do not merely have your students read and memorize sections of this textbook. Hammer's Grammar is very complex and includes a large amount of exceptions, a number of which are no longer in common use. Classmates I've had have expressed frustration over having to memorize exception after exception to a rule that seems rare in itself. This book is best used as a reference for advanced learners, and ought not to be the setting in which general grammatical rules are taught. Rather than reading and memorizing, it would be better for students to study this book topic by topic, complete with class discussion, re-mastering the principles before moving on to the many exceptions.
There are also a number of slightly odd English sentences in this book that might confuse the reader. Beware, and proceed at a slow, steady pace.
"++ READ THIS FIRST ++ (Everything you ever wanted to know about German but didn't know where to look.)", This is an excellent book for those working on learning German. * HOWEVER * If you are like me and were never able to gain a firm grasp of the English language while in high school you should get this book and a book called "English Grammar for Students of German" to use along side of this one to help you understand the basics in basic terms. You generally need to have a decent grasp of the mechanics of the English language before learning a foreign language. This book goes into great detail and is absolutely packed with information on the mechanics of the German language. Getting the workbook that goes with the book IS A MUST, as just reading about German is worthless. Get the workbook and work the exercises on a separate piece of paper. This makes it so you can rework the exercises again later if needed. Be diligent and work in the workbook everyday. As you go through out your day and have thoughts pop into your head try to think of how you would write a sentence in German that would equal that thought.
I am glad I bought this book as I will have to stretch myself to get through it. It's a great learning tool.
"Leitfaden der deutschen Grammatik", I commenced learning German in college and concluded with enough credits to earn a minor. Two summers were spent in Germany taking intensive German language classes (Munich and Mannheim), while two additional summers were spent working as an intern with Deutsche Telekom in Frankfurt. Upon concluding my Masters in EE, I married a German and subsequently lived in Germany for 10 years. For 5 of those years I was general manager of my own consulting company. All of our business was in German.
Inspite of this background, on any given page of this manual, there are tips and tricks to assist me in refining my language skills. This book has it. If it is not there, you in all likelyhood don't need to know it. The themes are logically laid out. Any and every topic is easy to find. This book is highly recommended. Beginners should not resist having this gold mine in his library.
"Excellent German grammar reference", This is the best and most comprehensive english language German grammar reference you can buy. It is definately not for Beginners. If you are an Intermediate to Advanced German student, it is perfect. You should also seriously consider the companion workbook Practicing German Grammar. For beginners to intermediate level learners, I highly recommend Schaum's Outline of German Grammar. Its easier to follow and doesn't cover all the minor nuances of German grammar that you won't need to know at the beginner to intermediate levels.

"Top of the line", This is the definitive book used at most upper level universities (Oxford [UK] is the only one I can site). This is an intermediate/advanced book. You won't miss out on many rules of grammar from a book like this. Great reference and with the exception of having a German help you with grammar this will be the most complete on explanations. Only bad thing is the people (Martin Durrell & graduate student)who were making this book were linguists and they love cross referencing everything.
"Thorough Grammatical Analysis of the German Language", HGGU is an excellent supplement to any German major/minor! I strongly reccommend this book solely for more advanced German speakers and those who understand the grammatical functions of language. If you are new to German, this is probably not the best way to start. But, if you are concentrating on all of the ins and outs of the language, this is the book for you. It is very specific to all aspects of grammar, offering examples, exceptions (because there are ALWAYS exceptions to the rules in German) and even often quoting German authors such as Boell. I highly recommend it, since my professor is one of those who worked on previous editions, and I know the amount of knowledge and breadth that was put into this book. Echt toll!
"great", this is the absolute best grammar book that i have ever seen... but unless you already speak german very well, this book will be too advanced for you... if you already speak good german, but you want to further your knowledge, then this book has EVERYTHING, and in detail... and most of the examples DO have english translations. the ones that do not have them, are done solely for syntactic purposes, where a translation is not needed... anyway, if you are in a 200+ level college course in german, i suggest this book... ive read pretty much every page, and its priceless... absolutely fantastic.
"Hard to "Digest"", Hammer's is a very advanced grammar book NOT intended for anyone with less than university English grammar knowledge. A great extent of the examples encompassed within the book are solely in German with no interpretation in English. And that is a major flaw. Some of the explanations can be quite confusing and unintelligible so beware. Furthermore, one should take into consideration that that it serves the function of reference, excluding practice. Therefore, it is insufficient for students in need of practice. In the overall, not very useful for freshmen students.
"The Most Thorough German Grammar Book Available", This book is a must for the serious German student. It's wonderful to have as a reference. I also highly recommend the workbook that is sold separately. It will keep you busy for a long time. This book still has German written in the pre-Rechtschreibreform style, but there are notes explaining when certain things are now used or written differently. This is written from a British point of view, so the English in it not necessarily used in America, but that makes no difference. It's an excellent book.
